News of Rand’s broken foot spread across the ship quickly, and Scott, being the ship’s gossip queen, was one of the first to hear about it. She wasn’t really sure if she and Rand were friends but the least she could do was visit while Rand was in the Sickbay. And so, after her night shift, she headed to Sickbay and took a seat next to Rand’s bed. “I heard you broke your foot. How’s it doing?”

~ NE Scott

Rand opened her eyes at the sound of Scott’s voice. She should have known the girl would show up. Rand had heard exclamation from the corridor as they passed the lab. She was here to gossip, at Rand’s expense. No, no that was mean and judgemental of Rand. Scott might gossip and she was, in her own way, nice to Rand.

She was groggy from the pain meds. Cmdr Alden had left awhile ago, after she’d dozed off from the bone fuser session. She looked down at her foot, invaded in a huge boot and propped up. “Uh…” She blinked and licked dry lips, her mouth dry from the meds, and tried to remember what the doc said. “I have to stay a couple days. I broke it in a few places.”

Rand

“Oh no! Everyone’s gonna miss you,” Scott said. She smiled and then added, “but you know who’s gonna miss you more? The commander! He seemed so upset, didn’t he?” Her tone gave away that she was enjoying the gossip, though she did feel bad about Rand’s foot.

~ NE Scott

Rand pushed herself up a little. Couldn’t Scott leave this alone? “No he seemed rather annoyed by the whole thing.” Though he had held her hand while the doctor set her foot. Luckily for Scott, the meds were making Rand a little loopy. “I doubt Cmdr Alden will miss me. All he will miss is someone to do his paperwork for him.” Regret or meds did funny things to her voice.

Rand

“Awww, he’ll definitely miss you!” Scott said. “You should see him light up when you come to visit at lunch.” ‘light up’ was a bit of a stretch, but he did seem happy. “Annoyed? I saw him, Rand, he carried you!” She said, and then she giggled.

~ NE Scott

Rand rolled her eyes, Roma.... Cmdr Alden would not notice her one way or the other. Unless she messed up his tea or reports. “First of all you aren’t there at lunch so you are making stuff up? Second I go at lunch to be alone. Third, Cmdr Alden can’t miss what he doesn’t notice.” Of course Scott would have to bring that up. With the help of the meds the room not only seemed to spin but wabble and warp around her, and it seemed a little hard to breathe. “I…I told you, I broke my foot in several places. I couldn’t walk on it alone. I needed help. Despite what you think he is a nice person.” Why couldn’t she leave it be. Why couldn’t the nurses let her go home? Where was Randy?

Rand

“I cover shifts during the day, sometimes. But I am usually night shift,” Scott replied. “If you think he doesn’t notice you, you must not be paying as much attention as I thought. He notices every time!” She shook her head at Rand. “He could’ve just supported you and helped you walk but instead he carried you walking so fast you’d think you were dying or something. I’m the only one who saw, everyone thinks I’m lying.”

~ NE Scott

Breathe Rand, it’s okay, you don’t want the nurse to come in here and confirm Scott’s gossip. Her hands and face felt clammy. She groaned quietly. Yes Alden always made a point to great her when she came in, but he did that with everyone, didn’t he? Plus she knew his secret - that he couldn’t sleep. If he was happy to see her it was only because she brought him drinks to help him stay awake. Or it could be because if she showed up it meant she hadn’t ratted him out. “I’m a yeoman. Cmdr Alden does not notice the likes of me.” She tried to be his friend but Roman…sigh…Cmdr Alden was too afraid to have friends.

Why did Scott have to see that? If she worked as hard in the lab as she did at gossip the girl would do amazing things. She reminded Rand of those reporters....her chest hurt, and there was a shooting pain down her arm leaving her fingers numb, and she felt sick. And she could feel her heart start to race painfully. And Rand lied for herself but also for Alden if she could stop the gossip. “I told you, it’s broke in several places. He was helping me walk, but I got dizzy and sick. I’m sure he found the whole thing annoying and a waste of his time.” He had said he didn’t mind helping her that he wanted to stay with her while the Dr worked on her. He probably just felt like he owed her. Honestly Rand was sorry everyone thought Scott was lying because she wasn’t, but she did it to herself with all the gossip.

Rand

Scott grinned and shrugged, clearly not believing Rand’s excuses. “Do you want him to notice you?” She asked, eyes lighting up once more. She was pretty sure Rand liked him, as much as Scott was sure Alden liked Rand. She knew a lot of the women on the ship thought he was hot. Rand couldn’t be the exception, in her mind. And Scott saw in the lab how well they got along. To her, it all added up. They had to like each other.

~ Ne Scott

Rand looked at her like she had grown another head. She was curled in on herself slightly - past the point of hiding her hands behind her back. It probably looked like her foot was bothering her. She felt really light headed and she was pretty sure it wasn’t just the pain meds. She felt alternately hot and cold. Oh wouldn’t it be amazing if Roman noticed her that way, but that wasn’t going to happen. It’s a part Rand, you can do this, play the part. “No..notice me? I’m a yeoman so that I don’t get noticed.” It was the truth and so it came out convincing.

At the nurses desk though her raised heart rate was starting to get the nurses attention.

Rand

“Oh…” Scott seemed upset by her answer. “Anyway, I hope you get better soon,” she said. It wasn’t just that Rand tempered Alden’s… particularities, Scott liked working with her. She didn’t think they were friends, really, mostly because she wasn’t sure how Rand felt about her, but she still did like having Rand around.

~ NE Scott

Oh God, she’d upset Scott. She didn’t mean to upset her, she just wanted Scott to stop. It was just like being in the hospital again. She didn’t want Scott to feel bad because of her. It was hard to breathe, Her chest hurt, where was Randy? In a desperate attempt to fix whatever she had done wrong Rand blurted out. “Thank you. I’ll miss, Nibbles. I’m not supposed to but I will.” Alden might hear about that and stop her from working with Nibbles, but she could handle that gossip. That she was kicked out of the lab for being too attached. Might be better, not spending so much time around Rom…ALDEN.

“Nibbles is going to miss you too! That mouse loves you,” Scott said. She wouldn’t tell Alden, she didn’t want to get Rand banned from the lab. She didn’t think Alden would ban Rand from the lab, but she still wouldn’t tell.

Nurse Shrine came in. “Rand? Dear what’s wrong?” One look at her and the nurse could tell she was having a panic attack. The bed was reading too high of a pulse rate, dangerously high blood pressure, and lower than normal blood oxygen. She glanced at Rand’s chart....a history of stress induced cardiomyopathy. Rand looked at her, pleading not to tell. Shrine laid a hand on her shoulder and squeezed reassuringly and fiddled with the bed readouts. “It looks like you’re having a reaction to the pain meds. Lie back, breathe slow and deep. I’m going to give you something to counter act it.” She smiled over at Scott, “Ensign, do you think you can help keep her calm while I get her something. Make sure she breathes slowly. If she seems like she can’t breathe or becomes agitated just call out. I’m going to go get something for the reaction but don’t want to leave her alone.”

Rand and Shrine

Scott nodded. “I’ll stay right here!” She said, looking worried for Rand. For the time being, no more wild tales made their way out of her, she just sat quietly by Rand, waiting for the nurse, or for Rand to say something.

~ NE Scott

Rand closed her eyes, thankful for Shrine. It wasn’t an allergic reaction they both knew that but she was thankful for the deception. She breathed slowly. She didn’t want Scott to have reason to call the nurse. She didn’t get up where Shrine had made her lie down, but she spoke softly. “I know I wrote it down, but she really likes food mix 7. It’s on the second self on the right. There is only a couple containers left. She hordes it. I made the mistake of thinking she was still hungry she ate it so fast the first time. Now she hordes it to get more, but if she seems…sad she should come out for it.”

“I’ll take care of her,” Scott promised, mentally noting the type and location of the food.

Shrine came back in with the hypogun. Rand shuddered. “Antihistamine, it will work quick.” What it was, was a mild dose of Ativan for the panic attack. “It will make her sleepy, but you can stay till she falls asleep.”

“Scott, would you do me a favor? I know it will sound strange to you, but…” Rand shrugged a little.

Rand

“Whatever you need!” Scott offered. She would stay till Rand fell asleep, she had the time. Then she’d have to go to bed, she was still on the night shift. But staying up a little late was worth it to keep Rand a little company.

~ NE Scott

Rand hated the idea she was being useless, she couldn’t do her job. “At 0600 will you get the lab reports for me? Just bring them here. The doctor said I could work on the computer. If Cmdr Alden says anything, tell him you thought you would help while I’m out. He will appreciate the initiative. I can send the final electronically. Maybe it will help him not be so cranky while I’m gone.” By the end of her little request Rand’s voice was heavy and stilted. Did she just admit she noticed Alden’s behavior? She wasn’t aware of it though.

Rand

“Sure!” Scott said. She knew which reports, the ones Alden grumbled over when he came in in the morning. He was usually especially cranky when he came in early. Scott wasn’t sure about Alden appreciating anything, but she was happy to help Rand out. And she admitted it! She did notice when Alden was cranky! Scott filed that piece of information away for later. “I’ll get them at 0600 sharp and bring them straight here!”

~ NE Scott

“Thank you.” Rand was quiet after that, the combination of medications finally putting her truly under. Shrine stepped back in to check her. “That was kind of you. The medical staff thanks you. She drove us all insane this morning with that communicator of hers, PaDD and the computer. Had people from all different departments running in and out of here like it was an admiral’s office.”

Rand and Shrine

“She’s always running around the ship like that, I guess that’s what happens when everyone else has to do the running,” Scott said to the nurse, standing up. “I have to go, I guess I’ll be around later, huh?” She said and then she smiled.
