Marcus Anders stepped confidently out of the turbolift, straightening his uniform in an imaginary mirror in front of him. He tried to spin confidently on his heel, but managed to half shift awkwardly 180 degrees. Anders corrected himself quickly and started on his way down the corridor. He kept his fingers crossed that nobody had noticed his slight blunder, but knew that news travelled fast on a ship this small.

-Ensign Marcus Anders: Security Officer-

Ford came down the long curve of the corridor, phaser on his hip, clipboard in hand. He glanced up as Marcus entered his periphery. “Morning Anders,” he greeted the young ensign. He checked him on the duty roster, dropping the clipboard to his side. “You get breakfast?” he asked him, raising an eyebrow.

COS Ford

OOC: mind if I join?

OOC: Of course! The more the merrier! :)

Anders grinned sheepishly, “Just come up from the Mess Hall myself, had the best food replicated eggs the Sentinel could offer, how are you on this fine morning?”

-Ensign Marcus Anders: Security Officer-

George walked down the corridor, a length of white cord wrapped around his wrist and a cup filled partially with nutrient cubes in his hand. He would stop every now and then to pick one up, toss it in the air, and catch it. It was quite enjoyable. He was off duty for now, heading from mess hall to his quarters, the long way round.

Seeing Ford and another security officer, he stopped. “Hey, Ford. Good to see you, sir. And as for you, it’s nice to meet you. I’m George Anderson. Just call me George.” He wasn’t a young man, but at 31, he wasn’t particularly old either.

Anderson, Sci/Sec

Marcus smiled warmly and extended a hand, “Marcus Anders, Marc to my friends. Care to join us on patrol?2

-Ensign Marcus Anders: Security Officer-

“Marc. A nice name,” George said with a small nod, accepting the handshake. “I’m off duty right now, I’m not sure what our Department head would say about an off duty officer doing the rounds,” he lifted his cup of cubes, grinning at Ford for a moment. “Maybe next time we’re on duty at the same time. I’m sure Ford could arrange that.”

George wasn’t wearing his duty uniform, wearing the black pants, but having exchanged the uniform top for a colourful tie-dye short-sleeve shirt.

Anderson, Sec/Sci

Ford chuckled. “I’m sure it could be arranged. And definitely no off-duty rounds, the paperwork is killer.” He glanced at his duty roster and then back to Anders. “You’re on simple patrol of this deck today,” he told the man. “One round should take 20 to 30 minutes. Check in with the duty officer in the security office every hour from a comm panel. Feel free to chat with people you see, gives you a feel for the deck, gets people used to seeing you, and trusting you. Just don’t dawdle.”

He looked over at George. “So… what’s this I hear about snakes, George?”

COS Ford

Marcus awkwardly retracted his hand before straightening his uniform, “Aye sir....” he paused, then cocked an eyebrow, “Snakes?”

-Ensign Marcus Anders: Security Officer-

“News travels fast, eh?” George chuckled, tossing another cube into his mouth. “I’ve got snakes. Six of em, set up in a little terrarium in my quarters. I got them properly approved through the official channels, sir, don’t you worry,” he grabbed the white cord around his wrist and twisted it between two fingers.

“They’re the equivalent of emotional support animals for me, sir. Help me deal with my… Issues.”

Anderson, Sci Sec

Marcus moved carefully with his next question, “Do you mind if I ask....?”

-Ensign Marcus Anders: Security Officer-

“Depends on the question,” George replied with a cheerful grin, leaning against the wall. He glanced at Ford.

George, Sci/Sec

Marc itched the back of his head for a few seconds, trying to mull over the best way to ask the question, “Forgive me for prying, but are the snakes linked to the… issues?”

-Ensign Marcus Anders: Security Officer-

“Ah, I’m not really sure what you mean,” George replied, looking a little confused. “He figured this guy was one of his teammates, and Ford had probably read it in his file, so it wouldn’t hurt to let the guy know. I’ve had an anxiety disorder since I was a kid. Funny for a Security officer to have anxiety, right?” he chuckled. Luckily, his anxiety was the sort to pop up when he had too much time to think, not when he had to think quickly. The Martial Arts training he’d done at the Academy had helped him a lot, but it still cropped up sometimes when he was alone. “The reason why isn’t something I am going to talk about, but because of some allergy stuff I’ve gotten taken care of but hadn’t at the time, we couldn’t have a cat or a dog in the house. So I got a snake instead. And that started a lifelong obsession.”

Anderson, Sec/Sci

“Sorry lad, tell me to mind me own business next time, just know if you ever need a chat, I’ll be about.” Marcus felt guilty for pushing for an answer, so made sure to try not to bring it up again. Aside from this, the young man was really looking forward to getting to know George, he seemed like a good bloke.

-Ensign Marcus Anders: Security Officer-

“Hey, it’s fine, buddy. It was bound to come out eventually, amiright? I don’t mind talking about the fact that I have Anxiety. Talking about it is good for me, and other people,” George said with a small smile. He’d learned not to worry about stuff like that. “Mental health tends to be a taboo subject or something only psychologists care about, but I think it’s great!”

Anderson, Sec/Sci

Marcus grinned, “Couldn’t agree more lad, it’s very important to talk about these things.” Realising that the two men had probably now been standing around for about five minutes, Anders changed tact, “We should probably get a shift on, walk with me lad?”
