Mark lifted his forehead off the frame of his cabin door. This was one meeting he truly didn’t want to attend. There was nothing Mark hated more than somebody trying to get in his head. He hated when people would try and analyze his feelings or scrutinize his thoughts. That was the exact job description of the person he was about to meet with. The ship’s counselor.

Alright. Let’s get this over with. He said as he brought his arms down to push his body away from the door. He took one last look in the mirror and leaned forward at the sight of his jet black hair. A gift from his mother’s side of the family. He pushed the stray long hairs from the top of his head and slicked them up and back with the rest of them. He ran his fingers along the shaved sides of his scalp and made sure his hair was properly parted where the hard part had been drawn with a razor. Leaning back again, he straightened his uniform and marched promptly out the door.

Outside of the Counselor’s office, Mark struggled to bring himself to press the chime on the panel beside the door. Inhale. 1. 2. 3. 4. Exhale. 1. 2. 3. 4. He thought as he brought the cool air in through his nose and out through his mouth. He pressed the chime.

When the doors opened, he stepped inside and was immediately greeted by the sight of whom, Mark could only assume, was the Saracen’s Counselor. Mark tried to look as comfortable as possible. “I’m Engisn Mark Atlas.” He said, his deep Tennessee accent becoming apparent. “I was told to come here for a psych exam.”

Ensign Mark Atlas, Medical

The man seated behind the desk didn’t look like a Counselor, in any form or fashion, save for the blue uniform of the Science and Medical Section he wore. He was a large human man; and as he stood up when the doors parted he was pushing seven feet in height. His massive shoulders and well-muscled frame seemed more appropriate for a Star Fleet Marine or Security officer than the ship’s Counselor; even down to the high and tight haircut his blonde hair was shaped into. What wasn’t similar to the rest of his appearance was the look of genuine friendliness and the sincere smile that crossed his features as Atlas came into the room. The Lieutenant Commander pips on his collar seemed odd given the youthful appearance of the man’s features… he couldn’t have been more than thirty.

“Ah yes. You must be Ensign Atlas. I’ve been expecting you.” came a voice thick with a Scottish accent. “Please, make yourself comfortable. Would you like a drink or a snack? I was about to grab myself something.” he asked as he made his way to the replicator.

Lt. Cmdr. Royal Sinclair, CNS

Mark stared in awe at the sight of the truly giant counselor. He raised his eyebrows in disbelief as the man before him stood nearly a foot taller than himself. Shaking off the sense of shock, Mark composed himself and returned the counselor’s friendly demeanor. Despite his distaste for the whole psychology concept, Mark saw no reason to be rude to somebody who was just trying to do their job.

“Thank you, sir.” Mark said with a smile as he pulled the chair out in front of him and sat down. Mark leaned back in the seat, crossing his legs, and straightening his uniform blouse. “No thank you. I’m alright.” Mark took a second to look around the counselor’s office before returning his attention to the man himself.

“I have to be honest with you. I’ve never gone through one of these before.” the young doctor stated with a small, nervous laugh. “Not for an official command anyway.”

Royal retrieved a cup of black tea from the replicator and walked over the seating area and set the cup down. As he sat, he looked at the Ensign and smiled. “Well, it’s nothing to worry yourself over. We are simply going to have a conversation. What that conversation is about and where it goes is, almost, entirely up to you. I’m just along for the ride, as it were.” and he picked up a PaDD and set it on one of his legs.

“So tell me about yourself, Ensign. Where do you call home?”

Sinclair, CNS
