She looked over at him, her gaze wistful. “Ballet,” she said softly. “I can change my appearance and dance. I’ve even performed on stage for… someone. Even made up my own choreography, but while the holoemitters can simulate the strain on my body and the effort it requires, there’s no physical evidence of my dancing. No soreness, no bloodied toes. Nothing that proves I had done what my body was simply not designed to do. It’s… strange. Unsettling.”

Dante’s eyebrow rose slightly as he listened, it wasn’t quite what he had expected but after she finished and he processed it, he had to chuckle softly as he looked back at her. “Of all the things you could miss most, it’s the physical sensation of pain?” He breathed out and shook his head, looking at his own hands but his slight smile remained. “I guess the pain is a reminder of our mortality, our physical existence, yes? Without it, I can see how it would be unsettling. Some people might get a god complex about that after a time, no physical pain, unlimited power. You would have to be remarkably mentally strong to deal with that.” His smile didn’t change, and he hoped the compliment would lighten the mood slightly.

“And then some,” Cori said cheekily with a wink as they crossed down the dune. She folded herself over Lacey’s neck without laying on the mare so that she kept her balance but gave the horse enough space to navigate and balance in the shifting sand. Not far away, the waves crashed gently on the shore, in a soothing whoosh.
“I will say though, that being holographic does make having pets much easier.” Dalton cast her electric gaze back at Dante. “Don’t have to muck out my quarters…”

“Bruce is remarkably well behaved, thank you very much.” Dante said good naturedly. “Well, for a more than six foot long lizard who thinks he is a person puppy and gets jealous when Nat and I watch movies, he’s still well behaved.” He brought the horse to a pause and looked out over the waves. “Sailing was also a favorite past time as a kid on the lakes where I grew up and holidayed. Did you ever do much sailing?”

Corinne shook her head. “No, can’t say I ever did. I spent most of my time either with my studies or helping out on the farm. And then later with ballet. Then I went to Academy and was focused on all of that. But it does seem like it would be rather exhilarating, and maybe peaceful in its own way. You can’t fight nature there. You have to work with it. Or so I understand…”
~Corinne Dalton
“It’s more about understanding just how far you can push your limits with nature,” he explained and smiled, then swung his leg over the horses back and slid to the ground. “It’s partly a battle, partly a partnership. You never let yourself think you have come to an agreement because nature will simply change the terms of the agreement. You get it right, and it is breathtaking how free and powerful you can feel, even while knowing you are tiny and insignificant at the exact same moment. There is nothing quite like it.” Giving Cash a rub along his neck, he turned and began to walk slowly towards the water, watching the sand around him and picking up the odd sea shell.
