Whether she was ever going to be the future Mrs. Ex-Dante Knight did not matter right now. The fact that Ashley was a dork was the conversation on the table. “Did you know that redheads come from a gene called MC1R. It is considered a mutation because it is only found in less than 5% of the population. Besides giving a person red hair it has been discovered that mutations in MC1R can increase pain perception. It also causes people to tan poorly. So if pasty pale whiny girls are your thing than she is your girl,” Daye said driving her heel into the top of his foot.

Dante grunted and cringed, letting go of Nat and doubling over slightly as the pain of the stomp shot up his leg. It wasn’t anything serious or permanent, just a mixture of shock and unexpected pain.
“What the blazes are you two doing? This isn’t some Klingon Mating Ritual! What in the name of my great grandfathers Sunday prayer session is going on here? This is combat training!” Horrible Hornsby bellowed at the two, accompanied by the curious and confused expressions on the faces of the rest of the class. “Daye, you better finish him!” The instructor yelled, no sympathy in his voice in the slightest.
“What the heck Nat!?” Dante said, looking up at her and reaching down for his injured foot, “You have an issue with Redheads? At least they seem to know what it is they want and aren’t afraid to go get it. When Ash wants something, she goes and gets it. Even if it’s not me she wants anymore.” Dante’s voice had taken on a mean edge, there was no hurt in it, just the sound of someone who was close to having had enough and was starting to realize it.

Dante’s word somehow hit a nerve with Daye. “No I have an issue with you,” she said forgetting everything about her training. Instead, Daye went with gut instinct. Launching her self across the mat, Natasha jumped on Dante’s back and clung on for dear life. The sudden extra weight and the way Nat didn’t care if she balanced it made Dante stumble a bit. “God I thought you had a backbone. I mean you expect to be a captain and make the hard decisions but you can’t make one for your personal life,” she grunted not sure what to do now. She theoretically had the high ground figuratively and literally only Daye did not know what to do with it.

Stumbling with the weight of the Russian spider monkey jumping on his back and placing her arms around his neck, Dante took a moment to regain some semblance of balance, and then happened to look at the crowd of people watching the ‘demonstration’ of hand to hand combat, and Horrible Hornsby standing to one side and glaring at the two of them, as they were, and of course they were, making a mockery of his class. “You think I can’t leave her?” he said to Tasia, “That I can’t cut someone out? Don’t push me Nat, I am loyal to a fault, loving and faithful but I expect honesty and trust. That is a two way street for me, if she causes that to be gone from us, I will walk. I deserve better than to be treated like that after all I have given her.”
“Get the hell out of my gym!” Hornsby roared at the two of them, and Dante, hardly able to breath much with the wiry little arms holding him tightly, reached around once or twice but couldn’t quite get hold of her as she shifted let and right to avoid his hands. Finally, with as much of a salute as he could muster and the other Cadets smirking and hiding wide grins behind their hands, Dante turned, and walked, backpack and all, into the nearest locker room which, thankfully, was empty as the Cadets still had an hour of practice to go.
“Alright, get off” Dante said through gritted teeth. “You’ve made your point.”
When Natasha made no move to get off him, Dante turned, and leaned back firmly on the wall, squashing Nat between him and the solid surface, then reached behind him and grabbed her legs, one on each side, to prevent her wriggling out from behind him, then he twisted his body, holding her in place as much as he could until he was facing her, Natasha still jammed between the wall and him, still holding on stubbornly.
Now, they were close, like they had been at the tree, but Dante was full of fire, his eyes blazed with the guilt of knowing what he had to do with Ashley, of anger at Natasha making him look a fool, and being right, and because he realized other things. “What the hell do you want, Nat” he asked her as he looked into her eyes from inches away, he could feel her breath on his lips, feel her pressing into him, felt her thighs to either side of him on his hands where he still held her so she couldn’t escape. Without waiting for her to reply, Dante felt himself moving without thought, on pure instinct. Something he had realized he wanted. He kissed her. It wasn’t as soft as she had kissed him under the tree, not searching and wondering or making a point. His kiss was firm, stronger, searching for her lips, searching for her.
