“Oh I meant something alright but it went right over your head,” Natasha said attempting to leg swipe him. “You know Dante for being as smart as people claim you are you are pretty dumb.” Frustration with herself, Dante, and the entire situation was making her forget her training. Natasha took a swing at Dante not caring about blocks or any of the training she had learned. The punch was supposed to make her feel better. Men were so blind. They couldn’t even follow the horse that you were leading to water even if they were strapped to it.
“What are you talking about?” Dante said, simply stepping back from the leg swipe and almost half heatedly slapping away the swing she took at him, but then suddenly moving almost lighting fast, grabbing hold of her wrist as he slapped it down with the other hand and pulling her towards him. She was off balance, and with a tug and a spin he had her with her back to him, his arms wrapped around her against pinning her arms to her side and holding her right into his chest, so close he could feel her heart beat and almost feel the frustration she had bottled inside.
“Why are you so enthralled by her. She is beautiful. I can see that but everything else is a mystery.”
Cadet Daye
Dante looked at Nat for a moment and softened a little, he still held her firm but it was no longer the hold of a man pinning someone in a melee. Simply holding her to his chest as thought of what had happened earlier. The hold had subtly changed from that of a controlling pin, to more of a secure hug “Because I love her, and she loves me” he said to Nat, “She’s fun, many people don’t get to see that side of her, and yes she’s beautiful, intelligent and the two of us have been together for years now, we clicked.”
Despite the words he was saying, something about Dante’s tone didn’t sound quite so confident. A few months ago and nothing could have shaken his belief that they were meant to be, but now, things seemed to have changed and Dante was finding himself confused, and it wasn’t a place he liked to be. Ashley now seemed to keep secrets and plan things without him, where at one stage the two had been inseparable and where one was, everybody at the Academy knew the other wasn’t far behind. Dante found himself wondering if it had all been worth it, or if he had in fact wasted those years on someone he thought he loved but was turning out to be shallow and manipulative.

Whether she was ever going to be the future Mrs. Ex-Dante Knight did not matter right now. The fact that Ashley was a dork was the conversation on the table. “Did you know that redheads come from a gene called MC1R. It is considered a mutation because it is only found in less than 5% of the population. Besides giving a person red hair it has been discovered that mutations in MC1R can increase pain perception. It also causes people to tan poorly. So if pasty pale whiny girls are your thing than she is your girl,” Daye said driving her heel into the top of his foot.

Dante grunted and cringed, letting go of Nat and doubling over slightly as the pain of the stomp shot up his leg. It wasn’t anything serious or permanent, just a mixture of shock and unexpected pain.
“What the blazes are you two doing? This isn’t some Klingon Mating Ritual! What in the name of my great grandfathers Sunday prayer session is going on here? This is combat training!” Horrible Hornsby bellowed at the two, accompanied by the curious and confused expressions on the faces of the rest of the class. “Daye, you better finish him!” The instructor yelled, no sympathy in his voice in the slightest.
“What the heck Nat!?” Dante said, looking up at her and reaching down for his injured foot, “You have an issue with Redheads? At least they seem to know what it is they want and aren’t afraid to go get it. When Ash wants something, she goes and gets it. Even if it’s not me she wants anymore.” Dante’s voice had taken on a mean edge, there was no hurt in it, just the sound of someone who was close to having had enough and was starting to realize it.

Dante’s word somehow hit a nerve with Daye. “No I have an issue with you,” she said forgetting everything about her training. Instead, Daye went with gut instinct. Launching her self across the mat, Natasha jumped on Dante’s back and clung on for dear life. The sudden extra weight and the way Nat didn’t care if she balanced it made Dante stumble a bit. “God I thought you had a backbone. I mean you expect to be a captain and make the hard decisions but you can’t make one for your personal life,” she grunted not sure what to do now. She theoretically had the high ground figuratively and literally only Daye did not know what to do with it.
