A while later, James found himself at his least favorite part of the Boarding process. He stood in front of the CNS’ door for a long moment before he pressed the chime for entrance. Then, he stepped back, waiting.

He was a stout young man, though not overweight. Years of hard work with his hands had made his already wide frame fill out at the shoulders and in the chest. He hailed from North Eastern Oklahoma, and looked it. James had blue eyes, light brown (almost blonde), curly hair which he wore short to hide the curls. His face was open, honest, and weather beaten. There were laugh lines, but also crow’s feet around his eyes. He’d be easy enough to read.

A male voice with a pronounced Scottish brogue said “Come in please, it’s open.” and the doors slid open to reveal the Counselor’s office.

Decorated in a warm and calming manner, the office was welcoming and not at all like the rest of the offices on board. The desk had been moved to the corner of the space where the bulkhead met the outer hull’s windows, opening the office space up for a seating area large enough to hold more than the single individual that most often came to talk with the ship’s Counselor. A couch and a few chairs were set around a small table, on which sat a crystal bowl filled with multicolored glass beads that seemed to have a small amount of internal light inside them. Two chairs sat facing the desk, probably allowing for more formal conversations or for administrative needs.

Low bookcases lined the walls, each one closed with a glass fronted door with brass hinges, in which sat some real books, many notebooks, and a few bookends of various sizes and shapes. On the wall behind the desk were several pictures on either side of a display case. Each shelf was filled with a few items the young officer seated at the desk had collected so far; but on the top shelf prominently sat a single item housed in a rounded glass display: The Star Fleet Marine Corps Distinguished Service Cross.

The officer himself was something of an anomaly as far as Counselors went, as well. Seated at the desk, the human male was still striking in size. Broad shoulders seemed to fill out the blue uniform of the Medical and Science section in a manner that seemed to contradict the norm, and the broad chest was obviously well-muscled. Bright blue eyes looked up from a handsome face graced with a warm smile. Blonde hair cut more akin to a Security officer or Marine topped his visage, and Lieutenant Commander pips on the collar seemed to contrast starkly to the man’s youthful appearance.

Looking at the figure in the doorway, Sinclair said “Hello, Ensign. May I help you?”

Franklin blinked at the sight before him for a moment. This was definitely unlike whatever he’d been expecting… Another stuffy starfleet medical officer with a clinically pristine office. This man was definitely a Marine, and had seen action. Even without the service cross, he’d have known by the man’s eyes. Losing crew mates left a mark on a man, he wore that mark himself.

James was somewhat opposite Royal. Where Royal looked young for his pips, James was a bit old for an ensign. His face and hands showed evidence of hard work and heavy burdens physically and psychologically.

“Well sir..” James drawled slowly, north eastern Oklahoma showing itself in his speech… “I suppose you could clear me for duty, if you have a moment?”

He brought the duffel bag off his shoulder and held it before him, his blue eyes returning to the Service Cross in its case.

Sinclair looked the man over and said in his heavy brogue “Well, that depends entirely on you then, doesn’t it Ensign…?” he let the sentence end in a questioning manner. He didn’t have any appointments scheduled at this time, but he was also well versed in the tendency for crew, especially new crew, to simply ‘show up’ for their on boarding assessments.

James winced just slightly at the word ‘Ensign’, but nodded. “That’s true, I suppose, Sir.” He swallowed once and met Royal’s eye. “If you’re busy I can make the usual appointment for evaluation, Sir… I had just assumed you’d been given my personnel file, and I wanted.. to make it known that I won’t be a problem here.” James paused, unsure. “If you take my meaning, Sir. …I just want to get on with my work and keep my head down.” His blue eyes flitted down to the Service Cross once more.
