“So you are telling me one arm looks different from the other?” This was a fact the XO already stated but since drugs or alcohol had been ruled out, Ally was having start from scratch. All the other drill conditions were symptoms of inclusion. Kolar was going to be a diagnosis of exclusion.

“If it didn’t I would not have called you down here.” Balfor had a slight hint of sarcasm to his tone but it was not negative in any way.

“Does anything on me look bigger?” Standing with her arms held out she waited for the XO to give her the once-over however she did have the tricorder pointed at him during the request.

Kolar blinked at her for a moment. No one would ever mistake him for a ladies man but even he knew that you didn’t comment on a woman’s appearance. “Well that is a loaded question, but no.”

Ally looked at Kolar, reading the expression on his face, and glanced down at the tricorder. Her expression of surprise matched his but, with a large smile spreading over her face. “Your gyrus’s are lit up. You have elevated readings on your left postcentral, left middle occipital, right postcentral, right precentral, right inferior occipital gyrus,” she rattled off several parts of the brain taking a breath before adding more. “You also have increased dACC, VTA and your nucleus accumbens is glowing like a Christmas tree.”

“So does that mean my head is going to explode,” he asked for clarification. This was only a drill but Ally was not the only one taking notes. As the XO, Balor needed to get a feel for his officers and how they operated. Ally seemed rather chatty but that tracked with all his other interactions with her.

“These parts of the brain are all activated when someone experiences a surprising event during motivated behavior. So was the motivation life lessons or common sense? It is not often one can surprise command staff. I mean you guys stare down a warship about to blow us into smithereens but the simple question of does my butt look big in these pants makes you flinch.” Ally found the response amusing and could not help but enjoy this medical intake. It was so much more informative about the nuances of the crew than the typical walk into sickbay intakes.

“With all due respect, nothing can be more terrifying than an open-ended question from a woman about her appearance, so life lessons.” He answered her question, “However, if you are going to turn this into a quasi-counseling session I have two questions for you.”

“The first is do you tend to talk this much about everything other than a diagnosis normally when people come into sick bay? If so I may need to adjust the duty rosters on sick call days.” His comment was laced with good-natured humor. Some doctors had the experience. Some doctors had the bedside manner. Ally so far appeared to be midline between them.

“The second question is do you know what is wrong with me?”
