It was after she met with the XO that Mika found herself in the ship’s Sickbay, ready to receive an onboarding evaluation. To her, the sounds of the Sickbay were quite comforting, and she found herself the most relaxed she’d been since joining the ship. She had only been out of the Sickbay three months, during which time she worked under her previous posting’s counselor to receive practical training. She still hadn’t fully broken the habit to answer medical calls.

Mika quickly got the attention of one of the medical staff passing by. “Excuse me, I’m here for a boarding medical evaluation. It’s alright if I have to wait a minute,” she said, and then she waited politely, turning her thoughts as to what to do after she finished the boarding tasks.

Nurse Claire Temple smiled at the Lt. “No need to wait. Dr Asimina is free, right this way and I’ll get her.” Claire led her over to a biobed, “I’m Claire, let me know if you need anything.” Claire walked towards the offices where Hannah was reading up on new use for nanites to help build better connections between prosthetics and the biological body. “Dr Asimina? There is a Lt here for her on boarding.” Hannah smiled. “Thanks Claire.”

Mika nodded, following Nurse Claire to a biobeds before waiting for the nurse to return with the doctor.

Hannah donned her lab coat and grabbed her tricorder. She walked over to the biobed. “Hello Lt. I’m Dr Asimina. Welcome to the Saracen.” Hannah’s voice had a strange accent, like she spoke around marbles. Mika, with her medical technology would recognize the external hearing implants next to both her ears. Her accent was due to not learning to speak to late childhood. “How are you feeling after your trip out here?” Saracen was in deep space and Hannah remembered her trip out was several weeks. She flipped open the tricorder and took out the small hand held probe. “May I?”

Mika recognized the way Asimina spoke quickly, and her suspicion was confirmed when she noticed the hearing implants the doctor wore. It made her glad that the implants had been invented and made better long ago.

“Thanks. I’m Tandra Mika,” she said, introducing herself. “The trip was okay. I’m glad to be here,” she replied. Her trip out had taken several weeks as well, but she was no stranger to long space rides. She’d already been shuttled around space before. “The Saracen has a bit of a reputation. I had heard a little about it before my assignment came through. Oh, go ahead” she commented, making small talk with the doctor.

Hannah didn’t chuckle or laugh, it was something she didn’t do in front of others, it made her self conscious, but she did smile. “That she does. What have you heard and maybe I can tell you if it’s accurate. I’ve not been here too long myself.” Hannah began the scan glancing periodically at the tricorder while she worked. She moved around the bed to complete her scans. “Anything I should be aware of?”

“Should all be in my file,” Mika said with a shrug. “That some of the crew can be quite the troublemakers. I didn’t hear any names though,” She replied. She was glad she wasn’t the only newbie to the ship. “Do you like it here?” she asked Hannah, wanting to get her opinion on the ship in general, rather than just the rumors that managed to make it halfway across the Federation.

Hannah finished her scans and ran the results against Mika’s file. “I do like it here. I…” Claire passed by and grinned, “Oh yeah Dr. Hannah LOVES it here.” And then she scurried off around the corner. Hannah glared at Claire turning slightly pink. “Claire likes think she’s on top of ship’s gossip, but she’s the best nurse here.” Hannah replaced the handheld probe and closed her tricorder. “It took me awhile to get my head around how close the crew is. I don’t like to spread gossip or assumptions. They get one into trouble. But I can say this crew is diverse enough that it doesn’t make someone who is different,” she points to her implants and then her throat, indicating her voice, “feel isolated. There are those who like to see things just their way, but that’s on every ship. I like it here.” She put the handheld scanner away and closed the tricorder.
