(snip)

Cori took it gingerly and immediately shook her head. “Nah, it’s fine. I would have pinged that that instant you came aboard the ship if that were the case.” Moving off the couch to the desk, she reached into a drawer and pulled out a standard science kit. “Catch,” she said before gently tossing a tricorder at the doctor.

She sighed, relieved. “That’s a relief. I wouldn’t want them to bother you,” she said honestly. Hannah deftly caught the tricorder out of the air. She reattached her implant and then flipped open the tricorder and walked over to Cori. She pointed at the emitter, “May I?”

“I’m more worried about torpedoes and phaser to be honest. Failing shields are more of a problem than small devices emitting frequencies,” Dalton admitted causally.

Spreading her hands out to the side, Cori smirked. “Go right ahead.” She was all photonic energy aside from the metallic and elastic that formed the device that fit around her left bicep.

Hannah began scanning the emitter focusing on any emissions and radio frequencies put out by the emitter. Hannah tapped away at the tricorder and after a minute she she had identified the frequency. She took off both her implants and using her thumb nail because she didn’t bring her tools, she took several minutes to make the adjustments. When she was done, she put the implants back on. There was still some buzzing, but it was mild and she should be able to identify it later. She smiled. “Thank you, Cori.” She handed back the tricorder.

“There is no…back up? No separate storage for your consciousness?” She knew Cori wasn’t a program, but her consciousness was stored in the computer. Hannah was beginning to come up with an idea…but she’d have to do some research first. And the laws behind it…well there would have to be a work around for that, and if Cori was already considered still a person, then her idea…Hannah stopped before she got ahead of herself.

She couldn’t help it. Cori barked a loud laugh. “If only,” she said, with a trailed chuckle and finished with a sigh. “Nah, another complicated situation, but the only way I exist is because I was scattered throughout the computer taking up nooks and crannies. It’s why the mobile emitter is so complicated. We’re never quite sure how much of me is ever actually contained within it. But assume that the most essential bits what you see and experience right now. I’m not really immortal. Once accident and-“she snapped her fingers-” game over. It’s kind of comforting actually.” There were caveats with that but even with Jarred’s latest idea, they constantly risked the equivalent of brain damage.

Hannah wasn’t sure what to say to that. She knew that it wasn’t a simple matter of replicating another emitter. Just like artificial organs the parts could be replicated, but the whole thing had to be assembled by hand. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to pry. I’m sorry everything is so complicated.” Hannah would normally offer to meet for coffee or a something similar when making new friends, but that wasn’t really considerate in this situation. “I hope this isn’t an insensitive question, but you have access to all the programs, what’s your favorite holoprogram?”

Dalton shrugged. “Depends on the day. Even favourite programs get to be tiring if you do them all the time.” Especially when it was the closest thing you could have to a normal existence. “But it’s a toss up between my parents farm on Ajilon with my horses, or going to the ballet. Or dancing in some way.” There was an earnestness with Hannah that was endearing but at the same time Cori was still cautious. With Federation Security on her back it felt like a house of cards about to fall. She didn’t want anyone to get dragged into it, but nor could she keep going it alone. Royal certainly wasn’t going to let that happen.

Hannah smiled, “Horses? I love being outside. I’ve ridden a few times, but nothing like you probably have. But I love rock climbing. Free climbing is my favorite.” She smiles, there was one particular climb she’d never get tired of, but only with the right person, and he happened to be on board…Hannah shook her head, “Even hikes. I grew up on a colony and there is a small national park of sorts. We climbed, hiked, camped, if it could be done outside we did it. Except for animals. All the animals are protected and off limits.” Hannah grinned, “I like to dance, can’t say I’m good at it. But honestly what girl doesn’t like to dance? It drove all the boys back home nuts. The girls want to dance, and they either don’t or don’t want the other boys to know they want to.” It was a truthful and plain girl talk.

“I used to be a ballerina. Most people weren’t dancing what I was dancing,” Cori said with a lopsided smirk. “And when I wasn’t working the farm or in class, I was dancing.”

Chewing on her lower lip for a moment she studied Asimina. “You’re the first person to come visit me in my quarters,” Dalton said softly.

~Corinne Dalton

Hannah was surprised by that. Surely Cori had friends and if this room was set up to make it easier for her to be ‘normal’ to move around why wouldn’t they? “Well I’m honored you let me in. And now we need to celebrate.” Hannah ordered the computer to play music and something they could ‘dance’ to. It was silly and maybe like being freshman at the academy, but Hannah had a feeling both she and Cori needed something like this. As the music started Hannah started dancing around the room. She was not good, not horrible, and it was funny.

Dalton just watched, her electric gaze shifting to and fro as Hannah suddenly let loose in her quarters. What is happening here? she thought. But there was a lightness to the doctor that was strangely captivating. How she envied that ability to just let it all go. There was a basic beat, and if there was anything she could do it was follow a beat. “Girl, we need to get you some lessons…” she said with a smirk and a shake of her head. But rather than just stand there, she stepped into the space as it were. Her body shimmered and she had pointe shoes on her feet. But rather than do actual ballet, she took basic steps and shifted it into an undulating motion that moved from the top of her to her toes. Then she’d step out quick on the down beat and do a couple hip hop steps before moving back to modified ballet step.

Hannah smiled. She would have laughed but she was very self-conscious about laughing in front of people. If her accent was strange, her laugh was even more so. “I know, I’m horrible, but it’s fun!” She watches Cori, “Wow, you are really talented. If you show me how to do that, I’ll teach you to climb.” Hannah makes the offer, sincere in it. And Cori wouldn’t have to do more than go to a holodeck since there wasn’t anywhere else to climb on Saracen.

Hannah’s combadge buzzed after a few more minutes, reminding her she was due in sickbay for her shift. “I’m sorry Cori, I have duty shift now. I’m serious though. I’d love to learn how to dance without looking like a dying fish.”

Hannah left, oddly optimistic hoping she’d made a new friend.
