Glancing at the clock Kate’s eyes got wide. There was no way she could be late to this. “Shoot. Shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot,” she mumbled rolling out of Shaun’s arms before he could grab her. Snagging her pants that were piled on the floor, Kate pulled them on quickly jumping to pull them up.

“You and I are going on a date. Get dressed,” Kate said throwing a shirt at his face. Her aim was great and his t-shirt from sometime over the last two days landed squarely over his eyes. Kate had no reason to think Shaun would refuse to come with her babysitting but sometimes it was just fun to pretend to convince him to do something. Tonight was that kind of night.

“What now?” Shaun asked her, unsure as to what she even meant. He had just come home after a long day that had been tense as it was, he just wanted to curl up with his Katie Bug.

Kate crawled across the bed and straddled Shaun sitting on his hips. “Come on Hero,” Kate said taking his wrists in her hands and raising them above his head. Leaning her face down close to his she whispered, “I will make it worth your while. We can play house. I will make fish sticks and mac n cheese for dinner. You can play with the kiddos before dinner.” Eskimo kissing him with the tip of her nose, Kate shook her hair enough that long strands fell around his face tickling his cheeks.

“What on Earth do you mean? Play with the kiddos? What have you gotten us into?” he said as he looked at her wide eyed. He didn’t remember plans, especially with kids. The ship had maybe a dozen or so kids on it, so he wasn’t even sure whose kids she meant.

“You know…pretend we are Mr. and Mrs. Grecken with two kids…like I always wanted.” Pausing for a second she looked deep in his eyes. Because I have never stopped wanting that. “So,” Kate sat up, “put that shirt on,” she leaned over and zerberted his tummy, “and let’s go babysit the Captian’s kids,” she finally told Shaun of their destination.

Taking the shirt Shaun put it on slipping out of his uniform. “Wait Captain Calin and Commander Salazar? Their kids? Why the devil are we babysitting their kids? I am not a pediatrician here love.” he said, seeming to know that there was no stopping here though.

“Oh there really isn’t any difference between adult and kid medicine except everything is…smaller,” she said. It sounded logical to her. “It’s not like kids grow extra organs. You will be fine. What’s the worst that could happen? A skinned knee because they tripped on the carpet. ” Stuffing her feet into the pair of shoes, Kate continued. “It is also good to do nice things for people. When my dad was on the Tie no one ever wanted to watch us because they totally freaked at the thought something would go wrong and the CO would hold it against them. There were times I think my mom would have let a rogue band of Ferengi Traders watch us for an hours peace. Besides,” Kate got a bit more solemn. “I…I loved it when we did this sort of thing back home. It was,” she shrugged a bit uncomfortable for the first time with him. She started the topic and needed a way to get out. “You know I loved the idea of pretending we were married and they were our kids once upon a time. Now we can do it because ......it is a nice thing to do. So let’s go,” Kate said quickly heading towards the door.

“Wait..” Shaun said softly, grabbing her wrist as he pulled her close to him as he took her into his arms. Placing his arms around her hips he looked down in her eyes as he leaned in closer as slowly let his lips find hers as he brushed back a strand of hair across her face.

“We don’t have to pretend to be married… you are not for one second no longer the love of my life. Our past is just that, in the past. I want you just as much as the day I asked you out that night for the prom when no one asked you. I realized back then I loved you more than just my best friends plucky little sister. You are everything for me, to me, and I don’t for one second want you to ever think you are not enough.” Shaun said as he held onto her a bit longer, letting his words sink into her.

Kate kissed him with a smirk. “Oh I know I am enough the question is can you handle all this,” she made a swirling gesture with her hands over the front of her body. “Now come on. We cant be late. It is the Captain’s kids we are watching.”

Kate held Shaun’s hand until the reach Rivar’s quarters. There she shook herself free. It would not look good for her and Shaun to be arriving like some love-struck teen couple. Reaching forward she palmed the lock and waited for the Captain or his wife to open it.

Rivar opened the door as he saw Shaun and Kate. While Kate was a semi familiar sight at staff meetings and other events, she was still semi new to the ship. Shaun on the other hand he hadn’t had much pleasure to interact with. Without being senior staff Calin merely knew of Shaun and not much more outside of a few run ins here and there on the ship. He too was relatively new, if he recalled joined as soon as Kate had.

Still, when Morganna said she got Kate to agree to babysit their kids so they can go on a date he had to admit her stock went up quite a bit in his book. “Greetings Ms O’Neill and Mr. Grecken, please come in.” he said as he offered them a chance to come into their quarters.

Shaun nodded as he looked back over at Kate as he raised his eyebrows. “Thank you sir.” Shaun said as he entered. He somehow felt nervous, he often avoided the captain in most placements he was in, doctors didn’t need to have much interaction with the commanding officer of their ships.

“Oh call me Kate and him Shaun,” she said waving off the miss with a smile. “My grandma was from the south as was my mom. The only Miss I tend to go by is Miss Kate and that is to the kids unless you have an issue with that,” Kate said. While she knew some people stood on formality and expected kids to address adults as Miss or Mrs. to her it seemed silly. “So anything special we should know,” Kate asked. “I will tell you I am the type to let the kids drop where they fall. Partially because I love to curl up and have an excuse to watch all the kids shows from my youth but also not to get them worked up at bedtime. Is this okay or do you prefer something different?”

“Do they bite?” Shaun asked, trying to gauge the temperament of the kids.

Kate’s head spun around so face Shaun was going to have to treat her for possible whiplash. *Oh God Shaun you did not just ask if they bite. They are children not feral animals.” Before Kate could reply, Shaun was continuing his line of questioning.

“Or do they throw? Shout? How good are they at sitting?” Shaun rattled off almost as if he was talking about a bunch of puppies and not children. “How is their potty habits?” he said before looking over at Kate. He could tell from her look that he should shut up as he looked back at Rivar and decided it was best to quit while he was ahead.

“Fabulous doctor but not so good with the pediatric unit,” Kate gave a weak apology to the Captain before immediately changing the subject. “That is why you have me,” she said shoving her hands in her pockets and rocking on the balls of her feet and then back to her heels once. “He’ll learn the more we watch the kiddos,” she said. “Can we meet them,” she asked.

Calin smiled and had the kids come in. “Girls, I am heading out to spend the evening with your mom. This is Kate and Shaun, they will watch and take care of you. Treat them like you would treat me or mommy okay?” Calin gave the order as he turned back to the couple.

“I better get going, she is waiting for me. Thank you both again.”
