The doors whooshing apart, he passed smoothly into the brightly lit medical bay. He straightened his red tunic top, wondering how line officers ever coped with the damn things. He already missed the one piece coveralls universal to Utopia Planitia personnel. Maybe the Captain would be amenable to changing uniform policy in engineering and allowing proper coveralls at least while on duty on the engineering deck…

He glanced around, catching the eye of the first medical officer he could find.

Gage Whitney (CE)

“Lieutenant?” A physician approached him, pulling a PaDD beneath the crook of her arm. Clasping her hands before her abdomen, she tilted her head. “How can I help you?” He was a new face, not uncommon on a ship of Chernov’s size. Albeit, his rank indicated a position as a senior officer, leading her to believe he was probably fresh to Chernov’s decks.

He glanced over as a young woman called out to him. Young indeed, despite her Vulcan ears. He truly wondered whether anyone aboard this ship was more than five years out of the Academy. If this was the state of affairs across the fleet, it was little wonder they weren’t offering daycare aboard the flagship… Then he remembered that most of the veterans of the fleet had died at the battle of Vulcan. His cheeks colored at that thought, shame here and then gone before he pulled himself together. He cleared his throat, mildly embarrassed “Lieutenant Gage Whitney, Chief Engineer. I’m here for my boarding physical, Doctor..?”

Whitney (CE)

T’Aria rose an eyebrow, his tainted cheeks piquing her interest. She chose not to ask. “I see. Welcome aboard, Lieutenant Whitney.” She knew it customary to offer welcome to newer officers, and despite differences in their cultures T’Aria tried to appease the gap by adopting some human methods. “T’Aria,” She informed. “Please have a seat,” She gestured to a nearby biobed, several of them empty in the ship’s reception bay.

Retrieving a medical scanner, T’Aria crossed to the biobed, pausing beside it to pull up the officer’s medical file. Physicals were among the simpler practices of medicine, but she did not particularly mind them. “Have you experienced illness or undergone any procedures within the last fourteen days?” She asked.

He hopped up on the biobed, wondering as he always did, why they weren’t at a more comfortable sitting height that could be easily adjusted… Surely a simple pneumatic mechanism controlled by a basic algorithm.. He pulled himself back again. He had an unfortunate habit of letting his mind run away with him, particularly when it came to engineering issues. His voice was casual and friendly “I have not.”

His medical records would indicate more than forty broken bones which had been treated and healed over the 46 years of his life. A number of severe lacerations, bruised ribs, lungs and a pneumothorax. All had been treated at different times successfully. Other than a slightly elevated blood pressure, not unusual for a near middle-aged human, he was in relatively perfect health.
