<SNIP!>“I was but due to the nature of our upcoming mission I have had to step aside. As I have been training Captain Taggart for the position it just meant I stepped down sooner.” Glancing up the corridor he added. “Perhaps the corridor is not the appropriate place for this discussion. Would you like to accompany me to the Executive Officer’s quarters, Lieutenant ..?” Stovik allowed a pause after Whitney’s rank to prod a name from the other man. Though he asked if he would like to accompany him, Stovik stepped down the corridor toward the XO’s door while waiting for the other man to reply.

He frowned, but with such limited experience of the actual Starfleet beyond a Starfleet Engineering complex, it would hardly do to speculate. He’d had a few Vulcans rotate in and out of the shipyard studying the facility, but with such a small number left in the universe, he still didn’t quite fathom why one of them continued to serve in Starfleet. He stepped out to match pace, verbally shrugging “Gage Whitney… Commander… I’ve been transferred from the shipyard on Utopia Planitia as your interim Chief Engineer”
Whitney (CE)
“Ah, of course. My apologies, Chief.” Stovik said as he reached the XO suite and deftly held the crate with one arm while he used the other to tap the door control. “We have been expecting you but with the Admiral’s arrival and our new mission destination I must admit that it slipped my mind.” Entering the quarters Stovik walked over to the sleeping area and set the crate on the bed. Returning to the living room/office area he said to Whitney.
“Please come in, Chief. Would you like some refreshment?”Commander Stovik
He raised his hand, warding “Thank you, Commander, no. After several unfortunate accidents over the years, I’ve sworn off drinking or eating on duty outside of meal breaks. I’ve found it increases efficiency remarkably.” He’d read something of a mission brief, of course, but it had been remarkably light on details. Not that he had a basis for comparison, having never read mission orders beyond ‘build this’. He glanced around the quarters. He’d always found them surprisingly large compared to other ships of the line, like the Starship class. Given the amount of space occupied by enhanced weaponry and shielding, he still wasn’t entirely sure how his father had managed to squeeze quarters the size of the command staff and VIP’s into such a packed floorplan. He had no doubt that at some point during this cruise, he would find some inconveniently narrow corridor or jeffries tube down which his not entirely svelte figure would become trapped.

“Commendable, Lieutenant.” Stovik said with a nod of respect. He didn’t normally offer crew who visited him in his office refreshment due to wishing to keep meetings on duty efficient but as this man had just arrived off a shuttle it was only polite. As well as in line with Vulcan guest culture. This was his quarters after all. He studied Whitney for a moment thinking that he and this new Chief would interact quite well. “ Have a seat, Lieutenant.” He said holding a hand out to one of the chairs in the seating area. He himself sat on the couch.
Once Whitney was seated he went on. “I am assuming that you have not been briefed yet as our orders were brought by the Admiral in person but we are on our way to Old Vulcan to search for some archives that are thought to be among the ruins.”
Commander Stovik
Taking the proffered seat, perching on the edge of it, he leaned forward slightly, his hands clasped before him “I read what appeared to be a very brief summary of vague orders. There was certainly no mention of Vulcan or archives. What kind of archives?”
Whitney (CE)
“It appears it is the collected archives of the majority of knowledge that Vulcan has amassed. It is housed in a very durable vault so the Admiral is quite hopeful that it is still intact despite the planet’s destruction.”The elderly Vulcan’s voice remained even and calm despite his matter of factly speaking of his home world’s destruction. Only deep in his eyes was it apparent how this affected him.
Commander Stovik
He’d wondered from time to time in the 12 years since Vulcans destruction what he would do if Earth had been destroyed. What would his family have done if the Xindi had been successful a century earlier? He put such thoughts out of his mind and returned to the task at hand “Given the method use to fracture the core of the planet, I would likely be somewhat less hopeful than the Admiral. This was also 12 years ago. Why has it taken this long for your people to attempt to retrieve the archive?”
