Lieutenant Alexander Mercer stepped through the doors of Sickbay, the familiar scent of antiseptics and the quiet hum of medical equipment greeting him as they had on every posting since graduating from the Academy. It was one of those rituals every transfer brought with it—a psychological evaluation, a medical examination, and enough paperwork to satisfy Starfleet’s seemingly endless administrative appetite.

Freshly assigned to the USS Chernov as Chief Operations Officer, Mercer had spent the better part of the morning becoming acquainted with the ship’s layout before deciding it was best to complete his mandatory medical before reporting elsewhere. Better to have the formalities out of the way and be ready to focus entirely on his new responsibilities.

He paused just inside the reception area, taking a moment to appreciate the efficiency with which Sickbay operated. Corpsmen and nurses moved with practiced precision between diagnostic stations, each seemingly knowing exactly where they needed to be.

Approaching the admissions desk, Mercer offered a courteous smile.

“Lieutenant Alexander Mercer, reporting for my initial boarding medical.”

He handed over his transfer orders and medical file before folding his hands comfortably behind his back. While he waited to be called, his eyes wandered briefly around the compartment, quietly observing the organized activity around him. It was an old habit—taking in his surroundings, noting exits, equipment placement, and workflow without consciously trying.

There was no sign of impatience. If anything, he appeared completely at ease. Medical examinations had never particularly bothered him, and after several transfers over the years, he knew the routine well enough to simply let the professionals do their work.

For now, all that remained was to wait his turn.
