Dawson made his way into Sick Bay and glanced around. The pressure in his temple had lessened but was still noticeable. He was sure part of it was the stress at failing the Weapons Recertification, but it wasn’t the cause. Something had triggered in him. That red dot of light. Dawson shook his head to chase away the memory. It just made his head hurt more.

It seemed he was spending more time in sick bay than he used to. It had only been a few weeks since he had been held behind a suspenser field at one of the sick beds by Captain’s orders. He had just returned to the ship after disappearing for three months. In the blink of an eye, it seemed, everything he had worked for had vanished.

“Hello?” He called, looking about for a medical officer to assist him. He hoped this would be a routine migraine, they could prescribe a quick hypospray solution, and he can get his certification rescheduled. He had thought, on his way over, about if he really needed his certification. He was a comms officer now, not security. Still, so much of him had been geared towards security, the thought of not being able to carry a phaser seemed alien to him. He unconsciously began to rub at his upper arms to warm himself up. The ship seemed colder to him lately.

Lt. Q Dawson - Communications Officer

“Hello!” replied Sutalo cheerfully. The short, stocky Efrosian blue-shirt man gave out a warm smile. “What can I help you with, lieutenant?”

“Dawson smiled back at the ensign and said, “Hello there. Lt. Q Dawson. I was taking the weapons certification and developed an unexplained migraine at the end. I need to get it examined and cleared so I can work on retaking the certification.”

Lt. Q Dawson - Comms

The call from the main bay brought Jenyfer out to see who it was. Seeing the nurse had it in hand, she smiled to the two of them. “Everything all right?” She was pretty sure it was, but it seemed rude to show up, then disappear without a word.

Dawson gave the Doctor a smile and said, “I think so. I’m just getting checked out for a sudden migraine.” He walked over and offered his hand, “Lt. Q Dawson, Chie-” he caught himself and choked off the last syllable. He was about to introduce himself as the Chief Weapons Officer, but that wasn’t the case. “Communications Officer. I don’t think we’ve met yet, Lieutenant…”

Lt. Q Dawson, Comms.

Jenyfer nodded and smiled. “Jenyfer Lynset, new medical officer. My pleasure. You’re in good hands with Ensign Sutalo.” She had been about to leave it at that when she had a thought.

“Communications… how often do you work past your assigned shift time? Or do something vigorous before or after your shift? And do you use coffee or tea to stay awake or give you sharper reflexes during stressful moments?” It was a long shot, but an idea had occurred to her.

Dawson gave a shy smile as he scratched the back of his head, “To be honest, while my duties haven’t been too stressful, I have been pulling extra hours on a research project. And yes, I do drink tea to help me keep up as I burn the midnight oil. You think that could be the cause?”

Lt. Q Dawson, Communications.

OOC: I’m not sure whether to jump in here, you seem like you’re on it! xD

Sutalo sat himself down next to Dawson. With a friendly voice, he asked, “can you describe how and when the migraine started? And can you describe the sensations its giving you?”

Dawson stretched his shoulders to relieve some tension and said, “It was strange, I was aiming at the target for the assessment and then it seemed to turn red and made me think of an electronic eye. Then as I looked at it more, and the more I began to think of it as an eye, this slow, squeazing pain, like my head was in vice slowly being tightened, started in my temples. It’s lessened now, almost entirely gone.”

-Lt. Q Dawson, Comms.

“An eye?” Sutalo was curious, his voice warm and non-accusatory. “Wanna tell me more about how you came to think of the target as an eye, and how the eye was related to pain?”

Dawson rubbed at his temples, the tension returning as he tried to describe the incident to Sutalo. “I’m not sure. I saw the target, then the idea seemed to pop into my head that it was an eye. It seemed like something important, that this was an eye. Something I needed to know, but the more I concentrated on the thought, the more pain I felt in my head.” Even as he began to describe the incident, the vice-like grip returned, as if trying to silence him.

Lt. Q Dawson, Comms

Sutalo tried to appraise the information he had gathered. He was no physician, but he had plenty of medical experience. Now, knowing what he did about Dawson’s disapperance and sudden re-emergence (how could he not? it was the only thing the whole ship talked about), he thought perhaps this eye was connected to the disappearance. He wanted more data though before he would speak to Dr Symar – or perhaps, this time, it was better to speak to Dr Kastarak. No, Commander Kastarak. He corrected himself in his own line of thoughts.

“Have you ever seen this eye before? Or does it remind you of something you’ve seen before?” he asked, hoping to use open-ended questions and avoiding leading ones. Perhaps that would be enough for him to test his hypothesis.

That’s the thing,” Dawson said, returning his attention to the here and now and relieving the grip of the vice, “It feels familiar, like something I should recognize, but I don’t. I’m unsure how to proceed. The more I describe it, the more it seems psychological in nature, but I can’t remember what could be triggering it.”

Lt. Q Dawson.

Sutalo gave Dawson a sympathetic nod. “Sounds uncanny. And a bit anxiety-inducing too. While anxiety can bring on migraines, it seems unusual for you. From your file, anxiety appears to be expressed otherwise. But there is something about that eye and the feelings it brings you.”

He paused.

“In my many years of nursing, I’ve seen a lot. What I’ve learnt is that more often than not, our instincts are right.”

Dawson looked from Sutalo to Lynset and said, “Do you have an recommendations? As of right now, it looks that I’m going to be ship side and unarmed for the time being if I can’t pass the weapons cert. I mean, I’m in Communications now, so I suppose it isn’t that pursuant to my current designation, it’s just… I’ve spent my entire career in Security. It feels strange to be so removed from it. So much has changed in those three months I was gone, but to me… It’s like I woke up one morning and everything I knew was gone.” He looked back up to the two medical officers and realized he had been rambling. “Excuse me, I’ve found myself thinking aloud a lot more recently. It helps organize my thoughts.”

Lt. Q Dawson.

“It is not up for me to say,” Sutalo said “but if you’re having migraines and are imagining or seeing things vividly that others cannot, then you would most likely not be medically fit to carry a weapon. Perhaps you went back to duty too quickly. Should we perhaps see to it that you get a physical exam again?”

Dawson tensed slightly at the suggestion he had gone back to duty to quickly. It may be true, but he didn’t want to admit it. He didn’t want to spend his time sitting in his room, spiraling. He needed something to occupy him. Keep his mind from the three-month void of memory. “It’s not that I’m hallucinating,” He said, clarifying, “It’s more like a strong association. Think of it like, if you happen to find a stick on the ground, that seems to be in shape of a sword. You see that it is a stick, and not a sword, but your mind still makes that connection internally. That was how it was with the target. I saw the light of the target, I knew what it was, but it seemed to trigger a memory of an electronic eye. The problem is that the the memory it triggered is one that I do not remember. These “crossed wires,” as it were, is what I think triggered the migraine. But I wouldn’t turn down another physical, to be sure.”
