As the young entered the bay John just got done putting the replica weapons into boxes. “Oh hello Lt. let me check some info with you” he said as he grabbed his pad. “ ok Lt. Q. Dawson you where once the CWO of this vessel. You been keeping up to date with re certification that is good so what do you like more the bolt shot or the beam shot”

“Beams,” Dawson said. He had never enjoyed the projectile type phasers. Just then the doors to the bay opened and another red shirt ran in.

Olesya ran into the bay and straight to Forster.

“Sorry I’m late. Dima was extra cuddly this morning. I love him, but he is such an orange cat sometimes.”

She looked around.

“Weapons recertification, huh? It’s good that you’re keeping up-to-date with those. We want to have as few areas of incompetency as possible. Where do you want me to start, Ensign?”

Dawson recognized her as the new CWO. He swallowed and put on a smile before walking over and extending his hand, “Good to see you Lieutenant. We haven’t met yet. I’m Lt. Q Dawson.”

John was not surprised from his answer not all officers like the newer bolt shot phasers but he had to train them in there use. “So what is the biggest mistake people make while using the bolt shot phasers” he asked both Lt’s to see if they know the answer.

Chris came up. “Glad to see you Mr. Dawson! I hate to be the bad guy here but we are ALL learning how to use ALL of the weapons and qualifying with them ALL! Besides there may not be a bolt type phaser around when you need it and I want us all to be ready and prepared since it seems we do a lot fighting. And the good Ensign Forester here will be teaching us! Can’t wait!”

Dawson was about to give an answer when Chris spoke up. “Understood sir. Just expressing a preference. I’m trained in both, but prefer the beams to bolt. I will say, ensign,” Dawson continued, “I’m not sure what the biggest mistake one would make with the bolt. I might guess not checking the setting?” He said, referencing the bolt phasers swivel design from the blue stun setting to the red kill setting. Beams seemed to have a more gradual adjustment setting that the user would configure themselves.

John looked at him “ even though the bolt phaser is a particle weapon. There is a kick to it. Most people try using it without understanding there is a kick to the weapon. It is the same with the rifle version unlike the old school, Maco rifles that fired a short particle beam there was no kick, but the bolt phasers to add a little bit more impact when it hits the target” he said showing a short video on the wall on how the bolt phasers work.

When the video was over he asked “any questions”

“That was an excellent video! Learned some new things and relearned others. I would say that not firing on a schedule can be a perishable skill. Anyone else learn or relearn something new?”

Pawl entered the cargo bay with his tool kit, planning on doing some work there, but he forgot there was a class being done there. “I am sorry, sirs. I forgot about the testing that was being done.” Pawl said sincerely to them. He knew he would have to deal with his own testing again, but his last testiing was not that long ago, and he was not going to argue semantics. Pawl, noticing the captain “sir!” snapping to attention so hard almost sprang something.

Adam had been on the ship for less than six hours and with the hectic schedule of on-boarding he had almost missed the weapons recertification. As a scientist, he would undoubtedly go on away missions as they discovered strange unexplored worlds. Adam looked towards the person in charge and said, “Ensign Nightroad reporting for weapons recertification.” as he tugged at his uniform.

Nightroad, Scientist

The Ensign running the class looked at and said “relax Nightroad before you sprain something” he said with his calm, friendly voice “now take a seat” then he looked over at the engineer “ will be done in a few hours. You can come back then, but will I be seeing you tomorrow for your recertification?” He asked the young engineer.

“Aye Sir,” Adam replied. Adam knew how to use phasers but disliked the idea of having to use them. The reason he became a scientist was so he didn’t have to fight but if the situation dictated it, he would have to use one.

“Well, I can do it now or tomorrow?” Pawl calmly suggested to the officer that he answered his question quickly so as not to waste time. Sitting the toolbox down softly as he waited for a response.

“That is fine take a seat then” he took a pad and started the video for the new comers to watch “ok the rest of you to the red line on the floor” he said

Pawl moved over to the table and took a seat. “Thank you!” As he started to watch the video intently.

Dawson stepped up to the red line and awaited further instruction.

John then carried 2 boxes to the line the first box had 2 phasers one beam and the other the the bolt shot they both have been loaded with holographic rounds the other box carried 2 phasers Rifles one beam and the other was bolt shot. “Ok where going to start shooting at holographic targets you need to his 10 out of 20 targets to pass but I want to all to try for 15 when I was in the academy my score was 18 I wanna see you all do better……captain will you like to go first ?”

Pawl was focused on the video but he could easily tell who and all that was around him. After the video was over he waited calmly where he was till the ensign was ready for him or his turn.

As the young Ensign was having every one taking turns shooting with the help of one of the security teams keeping watch and helping keep this safe even though they were using halo rounds.

John saw the video was done he walked over to the group “So from the video what is the number one problem people have with the bolt shot phasers” he asked the group

Adam waited for his turn and did not mind others cutting in front of him. This allowed him to relax to get a better outcome of this event.

John saw pawl raise his hand wanting to answer “pawl you can give us the answer” he said like a game show host.

“The Bolt shot phasers were notorious for jamming up at the most inopportune times. Thank goodness the newer versions fixed some of the issues.” Pawl said calmly.

John Looked at him and said “no most people believe that the bolt shot phasers was like the EM-33 but this is a small kick so you do need to adjust your aim with the bolt shots unlike the beam phaser there will be no kick under stand. so the tablets in front of you you have a small test 20 questions multiple-choice you’ll be the first group to fill out the written part of the test then when you’re done with the test and the first group is done shooting, you guys will switch. You can begin your test now.” He said.

Occ I never answered this since it was assumed that the test had to be done.???

Pawl answered the test calmly and quietly so not to disturb the class.

Dawson quickly went through the written test and finished it without much trouble. He set it aside and watched the Captain at the firing range.

Nightroad

The Captain listened to the range instructor intently as the qualifications course was changed from last year. Chris nodded and fired the hologram bullets exactly where he needed them to. He was an excellent shot being in combat more than all but a few Captains out there and a member of Section 13. But he was not all aces out there. Occasionally a fee rounds would end up next to where he would’ve liked by an inch or so, but the “bad guy” was still stunned or deceased. Seeing the weapon back down after making sure it was cleared and unloaded he looked at the instructor. “So, how did I do?”

John checked his padd “very good captain you got 17” the Line officers retrieved the phaser that Captain was using and cleared it again and put it back into the box. Then the officer took out the rifle version of the phaser he was just using. “Ok now same drill……go”

Ensign John Forster (ACWO)

Chris nodded. “Thank you.” Then he checked the riddle and shouldered it while talking aim. Letting out his breath slowly he gently and firmly depressed the trigger until the weapon fired. He repeated it until he was done firing and cleared the rifle and satit back down on the table with the muzzle facing down range.

John checked his pad “ congratulations Captain you got 15 you hear by past the qualification you can enjoy the rest of your day, sir” he said with a clam happy voice

the line officers retrieved the phaser you where using and stored it away. After the phaser was stored the line officer said “ok sir you can fall out of line”

“Congratulations Captain,” Adam said as he waited.

“Thanks Nightroad! I appreciate that. You’ll do just as well, I’m sure.

“Roger that sir. Thank you.” Chris turned around. “Next!”

Dawson stepped up to the line and greeted Ensign Forster and the line officer. The name Forster seemed familiar to Dawson, but he couldn’t quite place it. “Evening, Ensign. Whenever you’re ready.”

Then line officer handed Dawson a hand phaser (you don’t know if it is beam or bolt). John received the nod from his line officer “ok…..ready……GO!”

Dawson took the phaser and looked it over, unsure if it was bolt or beam. The newer models didn’t leave much for identification. He took his stance and prepped for the potential kick of a bolt phaser. As the targets began to come onto the holoscreen Dawson carefully took aim and fired. The bolt hit the target but was off to the side slightly. Even with preparation, the kick from the bolt surprised him. Dawson quickly adjusted and found his next shot to be closer to center. His shots improved as he fell into the rhythm and feel of the phaser.

OOC: ok Dawson the next weapon you will use is a beam after this one

John Watch as Dawson was ready for the kick and smiled at his surprised face when he fired. After a few minutes the score was in 15 hits out of 20. “Good shooting Tex you scored at the 75% you past the bolt part now time for the beam shot”

the line officers took the bolt shot phaser and switch it to the beam phaser he held it out for Dawson to take it. the line officer looked at him and said “remember to always treat the phaser or any weapon as if it is loaded never point the barrel at anyone or anything unless you intend to use it”

Dawson looked at him with a raised eyebrow but said nothing before handing off the phaser properly. He then took the beam phaser and readied for the test to start. Knowing now which weapon he had, he was more relaxed. As he said, he preferred the beam phasers to the bolt. As he shot through the moving targets and their various colors, he felt much more comfortable.

Chris saw a and heard the exchange between Dawson and the line officer and frowned. “Mr. Forster. Come and speak to me please.” Forster would notice that the Captain did not ask him, but told him.

John made his why to the captain “yes sir what seems to be the problem” John asked confused. He too, was listening to the exchange. It was just a friendly reminder for everyone.

OOC: That’s the problem right there. Range safety with Firearms is not a place to screw around. I told you before that one of my real life jobs was a Firearms instructor and I take that seriously.

IC: Chris starred at him with his one good piercing blue eye and in a commanding but gentle voice that the others would not hear, said, “Mr. Forster. I noticed that one of your instructors gave a weapon to Lieutenant Dawson and did not state which weapon it was that he had to fire. We are not in the business of killing others least of all each other, but we will defend ourselves and others, which is why we train.”

“I noticed that you saw that interaction and did nothing about it. It could be that this is your first time in a supervisory role and that I may have promoted you too soon. So I’m going to tell you this only one time. Retrain your personnel and bring them up to standards and yourself for that matter. Change comes from the top. Do that and you get to keep your new job. Don’t do that and I’ll find you another post off this great ship faster than you can blink. Now go back and handle that situation like a Department Head should and don’t make me regret promoting you and giving you a shot and I don’t want to hear any excuses, apologies or reasons. Just say, Yes Sir and go about your duties and I’ll forget this happened. Do I make myself clear Lieutenant?”

John looked at the captain and said “yes sir” he then turned and called the line officer over before the line officer left the line an other officer took his place in line and they had a small conversation by the time they where done John said out loud “remember everyone when you approached line for your turn you will be given a bolt phaser first after you shoot with the bolt you will be given a beam phaser to use. Is that clear” he asked everyone. Then he turned next to the line. “line officer ready” he called the line officer gave him the ok single “Dawson are you ready”

Dawson gave a nod to the Weapons Officer. “Yes sir.” He took his stance and aimed at the range. When the targets began to dart across the range, Dawson quickly locked on and dispatched them with greater ease than with the bolt phaser. One of his last target spheres changed to a bright red and Dawson froze. He had the sudden feeling that it was a piercing red eye, staring through him. His hand shook slightly and when he fired, he missed the target. He blinked rapidly, trying to cleanse the feeling from himself. He took a breath and returned the phaser to the line officer, having turned the phaser off from its lowest setting. Stepping away from the line, he began to rub at his eyes and pinch the bridge of his nose. He was beginning to get a headache.

John pressed the emergency stop on his remote and walked over to Dawson “hey man are you ok you froze up. What’s wrong” he asked with a concerned voice.

Dawson rubbed at his eyes and then turned to the Lieutenant. “Not sure. Started to get a headache there for a minute. It seems to be clearing up however.” He turned more towards Forster and the range and asked, “Is there anything further for the certification?”

John looked at him “ i’m sorry but because of that, freeze up and the test not being completed your going have to talk to a counselor as of now you cannot carry until you get cleared” he said in his concerned voice.

Dawson looked from Forster to Taggart and back again. “I just had a migraine. The target light… must have irritated… something…” He pressed two fingers to his forehead trying to relieve the now growing pressure there. Taking a calming breath, he said, “I am going to report to sick bay. When I’m cleared, I’ll reschedule with your office, Lieutenant. I’m sure we’ll get this squared away.” He gave a tight smile to Forster and the captain before heading out of the shuttle bay.

Lt. Dawson - Comms

John looked at him and said “The hologram is projected using blue light filter there is no red light coming from it. I want you to speak to someone about this until you do you will not be cleared for any away team duty’s” he said but had a feeling. What happened to him the few months he vanished what happened to him?

John looked around “ok who is next step to the line” he called out

“I guess its my turn?”Pawl spoke as he felt he had waited forever for this to get done. Pawl stood up and moved closer to the officer. Pawl watched the others go through their testing. Pawl kept quiet unless he was spoken to. He stood there quietly and patiently.

The line officer held out a rifle and said “Bolt shot phaser rifle” (to let you know what you are using) the line officer gave the single and John Handel the controls “ready set……….go go go”

Paul took a moment to familiarize himself with the gun, its weight, etc., before he stood ready to fire. As he listened to the officer in charge of the testing, he stood ready, and when he heard the go signal, he started firing the weapon at his assigned targets. He focused on the test at hand and avoided any outside distractions. It almost looked like a graceful dance from other people’s perspective. He stopped after there were no other targets to fire at. He stood ready just in case there was a hidden ambush type of target. He kept at the ready until he heard the word to stop. “How was that, sir?” Pawl asked him still waiting for anything.

John looked at his padd “you hit 13 out of 20 you still passed but I want you to spend more time practicing” the line officer took the rifle and gave him the beam shot rifle. “Beam shot rifle” the line officer said. John checked the padd got the program ready again he looked up and said “ready set…….go go go”

Pawl took a moment to get familiar with the new weapon. As he heard the go command, he started firing at the targets again. doing his best to get a better score. as he focused on the moment and ignored any outside distractions. Pawl stopped after there were no other targets that presented themselves to him—kept at the ready just in case of an ambush. he did listen for the word to stop.

The line officer called out “rang cleared” John looked at his pad and said “15 out of 20 hits. Good job you have passed the requalification.” The line officer relieved the engineer of the phaser rifle. John looked at everyone “ we will take a small break to recharge the holographic projectors” he said taking a seat.

“Thank you, sir! Please let me know if all is clear, so I can deal with maintenance in this area.” as he grabbed his tool kit. He moved towards the exit to deal with other maintenance.

John looked at him as he was walking away “oh and by the way the reason I picked this area was due to the schedule it was clear of any maintenance and I did make the announcement ship wide. so next time just come to the class and don’t lie about working maintenance. You are dismissed” he said setting down at his makeshift desk.

PAwl stopped before the doors were to open. looked at him strangely. He had not lied to the man, he must have looked at the older schedule before the update. “Thank you, sir?” Looking at the others for a moment before leaving, he wondered why he had been called a liar in front of them.
