Kastarak, for the purposes of the disguise and the mission now that Taggart had ordered, dressed in a Romulan commander’s uniform. He had ordered his bridge crew consisting of Symar, Valharra and Batario to do the same. Symar and Valharra had also been ordered to “play” Romulans, while Batario was supposed to be a Betazoid pro-Romulan anti-Federation spy, instrumental in the takeover of the Chernov.

Kastarak took on the name Darak. He told his bridge crew that they now had to assume new names. The Chernov would be for the purposes of the visit from the Vorta Vor be known as the Rovarran.

“What shall I call you?” He asked Symar, Valharra and Batario.

At the same time, the people down in the brig had a direct contact with the transporer room, Bridge, as well as all other rooms that Vartiek and his people would use.

“Mr Batario, on my command, energise, but not until we’re ready.”

He slapped the communicator, “Kastarak to Captain Taggart, come in captain. Please confirm you can follow us through your screens.”

Turning to the small screens he flipped the switch. “I can see and hear you Number One.’

Kastarak replied quickly, “Very good, captain. On your command, we will beam over the Vorta Vor crew.”

“Let’s get this over with Commander Darak. Proceed.”

The transporter room shimmered with faint light as the Romulan boarding party materialised. Commander Kastarak, now Commander Darek, adjusted his posture and clasped his hands behind his back, adopting the measured bearing he imagined a Romulan commander might favour. The weight of the Romulan uniform hung stiffly on his shoulders.

As the shimmer faded, Commander Vartiek and his five officers stepped forward, their emerald sashes and polished boots catching the artificial light. Vartiek was an older man, his face etched with years of cautious observation. His eyes swept the transporter room like a hawk scanning for prey. Kastarak felt the gaze land on him, probing, evaluating.

Kastarak inclined his head slightly, attempting to convey aloof authority. “Commander Vartiek,” he said, his voice steady and unhurried, each word carefully enunciated. “Welcome aboard the Rovarran.”

Vartiek studied him for a moment, his expression unreadable. “Commander Darek,” he replied, his voice low and deliberate, laced with the faintest trace of skepticism. “I am honoured to step aboard… though it is not every day one encounters a mission as opaque as yours.”

A flicker of unease danced at the edge of Kastarak’s awareness. He suppressed it ruthlessly, calling on his Vulcan discipline to maintain control. “Secrecy is the foundation of our Empire’s strength,” he said, his tone firm but not dismissive. “Our objectives are classified at the highest levels. I trust you understand.”

Vartiek’s mouth twitched in what might have been a smile—or a grimace. “Of course. It is not my place to question the Senate’s wisdom or its emissaries.” His eyes roamed the room again, lingering on the subtle inconsistencies. “Why a Federation ship?”

Kastarak gestured towards the corridor, steering the conversation forward. “Allow me to escort you to the bridge. There, I can answer what few questions your clearance permits.”

The Romulan officers fell into step behind them as Kastarak led the way through the ship’s corridors. He kept his movements deliberate, striving to appear natural under the weight of Vartiek’s scrutiny. Every step felt heavier, the stakes pressing on his composure. Vartiek walked beside him in silence for a few moments, then spoke.

“I must admit,” Vartiek said, his voice conversational but laced with subtle curiosity, “I was unaware that any other ship than the Vorta Vor was involved in operations this deep into Klingon territory. A bold manoeuvre, even for our Star Empire.”

Kastarak forced a slight smirk onto his face—an expression he hoped conveyed Romulan arrogance. “Boldness is often mistaken for recklessness by those outside the inner circle. Our mission is vital, though I am not at liberty to elaborate.”

Vartiek gave a noncommittal hum, his sharp gaze catching on a Federation insignia etched into the corridor paneling. The mark was faint, barely visible where the paint had been scraped away, but enough to stir his suspicion. “Curious that we’re aboard a Federation ship nonetheless,” he remarked.

Kastarak’s mind raced, but he replied smoothly. “A deliberate choice. A Federation ruse serves us well here in Klingon space. A cloak that is not merely technological but psychological. Surely you see the logic.”

“Logic,” Vartiek murmured, his tone faintly sardonic. “Not a word I often hear among our kind.”

Kastarak’s pulse quickened. A test, perhaps. He turned his head slightly, allowing his features to settle into an expression of amused tolerance. “Logic, when wielded as a tool, can achieve what brute force cannot. But only fools would rely on it alone–”, Kastarak paused for a breath before finishing his sentence, “– like our Vulcan ancestors.”

The corridor stretched on in tense silence before they reached the bridge. As the doors parted, Kastarak straightened his posture, his hands falling to his sides in a gesture of command. Vartiek stepped forward, his sharp eyes scanning the room, lingering on the helm controls and the tactical displays.

“An impressive operation,” Vartiek said finally, though his tone lacked warmth. Vartiek’s gaze lingered on Kastarak for a moment longer, then he turned to one of his officers. “Ensure our scans of the Rovarran’s systems are completed. I would hate to leave any uncertainties behind.”

Kastarak’s stomach clenched. Vartiek was testing the waters, perhaps unconvinced but unwilling to commit to outright confrontation. The game was far from over, and the stakes were growing higher.

Kastarak stepped forward, drawing Vartiek’s attention back to him. “If there is anything more you require, Commander,” he said smoothly, “you need only ask. The Rovarran and her mission are, after all, at the Empire’s service.”

Vartiek’s lips curved into a faint, inscrutable smile. “Of course, Commander Darek. At the Empire’s service.”

The bridge felt colder as the Romulan commander turned his attention back to the displays, and Kastarak knew the charade’s thin veil would be tested again before long.

Ooc: anyone want to continue or should we skip this part and fast forward to going deeper in Klingon space?

“I will go by the name Lanson, Sir.” Lt. Valharra responded. He reflected on his childhood Romulan friend with that name as he made his statement.
