Pawl finished off his shift in engineering and then headed directly back to the medical section to check on Kasarak. It did not take long to get to the medical section from where he had finished. As the door opened to medical as he started to scan the room of the waiting area calmly for the nurse to see if it was a good time to check in on the first officer. “Hello, Nurse Dominio. How is the first officer doing?” Pawl asked as calmly as he could.

“You can see him yourself,” Dominio replied. “He’s called your name in his sleep. I think he’d be happy to see you. Or as happy as a Vulcan can be.... Come, I’ll lead the way. He’s awake now.”

Dominio led Batario through the many biobeds with patients still on. A few broken bones here and there, but luckily, nothing too serious. All would be well within a few more hours.

Soon they arrived at Kastarak’s bed. Kastarak was awake.

“Mr Kastarak, sir, your friend is here to see you.”

Kastarak was lying down but sat up on the bed. To Dominio, it looked like one of those old vampire films, when the vampire simply lifted their upper body 90 degrees. It was almost comedic.

“Hello, Pawl,” Kastarak said, in his usual dead-pan manner. He turned to the nurse. “Thank you, Dominio.”

Dominio quickly left the two men.

“I am pleased you are doing better.” Pawl said calmly and softly to him. Pawl closed near to him to stand next to his biobed. but kept his hands to himself at the moment. But he was relieved he was doing well. “I am doing ok. Just rather tired from all of the work and repair that were done.” as he grabbed a nearby stool and took a seat.

“I understand,” Kastarak said softly. “I am sure you are performing admirably. From the injuries here in Sickbay, I understand there has been a lot of damage across the ship. How are your repairs going?”

“All the repairs a completed.” Pawl said in a tired tone. “And how are you progressing?” trying not to use the word feeling in his question. Knowing full well that Kasarak might take a question to the statement if it was asked with the word feeling in it.

“I’m told I can return to bridge after lunch assuming I keep progressing in the same rate. I’m in no pain, and all that is needed are some cognitive tests.”

Kastarak paused.

“I understand you were with me while I was unconscious. The sensations of you were comforting. I have missed your presence.”

“Yes I was here earlier.” Pawl said calmly to him. “Same here Kasarak. We may not be a couple But I am a concerned friend. I always will be part of you and you me even if we are no longer coupled.” Pawl said with a soft smile. “And I missed your presence as well.”

Pawl had said the words Kastarak couldn’t. At least they were on the same page. Except… when he heard the words we are no longer coupled, he felt a sudden pain in his gut.

He gave himself a shot of pain relief, he had no strength to deal with that cognitively.

Once the meds were working, seconds later, he looked at Pawl.

“Thank you,” he said.

Pawl noted the hint of pain from kasarak. “I am sorry Kasarak I did not mean it in a harmful way.” Pawl said sincerely to Kasarak Softly. “We are still friends?!” Pawl asked looking into kasaraks eyes for a moment, not really expecting a response. “I will always care for you, my friend. Maybe when things settle down more we can have a meal together as friends and maybe play a calming game of Kal-toh?”

Kastarak was always surprised by how well Pawl sensed Kastarak’s feelings. He supposed that he shouldn’t be surprised by it, as it’s the one thing that made him want Pawl.

“I should like that,” Kastarak said in his normal voice devoid of emotion.

a moment later, he added:

“Whatever happens, you form part of my identity.”

All Pawl could do was smile. “I am pleased.”Pawl said softly to him. “Is there anything you wish to try as foods go?” Pawl was trying to make small talk.
