Pawl was debating with the idea of returning the engineer to restore her back to the chief engineer position. Pawl walked from Main engineering to Auxilary control. Before heading to see the captain at his office. Pawl was toiling with this for hours before deciding to talk to the captain. As He moved closer to the door and tapped the chime. To let him know he was there.

The Captain was indeed there at the time. “Come. ” Came the reply. Chris wondered who it could be.

Pawl heard the reply as he closed on the door as it opened to the office. “Sorry to bother you sir. ” Pawl said with a small smile as he entered the room. “I would like to talk to you about restoring Sara to the chief engineer Position.” Pawl came out with it quickly trying not to hide things in a mystery. As he stood there at attention waiting for his reply.

“Sure thing Paw.....” He quickly stopped and eyed Pawl, not in a bad way, just trying to figure it out. “Pawl. You have done a great job as Chief Engineer. You are the Chief Engineer now. Miss Lovejoy left and you replaced her. It is your job now Pawl.” He said Kindly. “Now as I would rather you stay, we did mention that you could go to another job duty if the right person or being came along. I do not see Miss Lovejoy as a good fit for the role anymore and not without some training. I want to make this very clear upfront with you since you were upfront with me. Do not let anyone bully you in or out of a job because of rank, past experiences or what have you. This is YOUR job, not hers. She left and the mantel fell on to you. So please answer me honestly. Do you really want to give up this position to her and if so, I would like to know why and what you plan to do afterwards?” He got a bit emotional and stern but ended it kindly so that Pawl would know that he is not mad at him and if he read the Captains thoughts he would see just that.

Pawl was not accustomed to being forward by another officer most tend to attempt to hide or push things to the side. It was a bit refreshing, to say the least. He was kinda shocked that he was not invited to take a seat. Pawl was silent for a long minute before he spoke. “Thank you for the kind words, sir! That means a lot to me.” Pawl said kindly and added. ” I was not bullied into this situation by Sara or anyone else.” Pawl paused a moment before continuing on. “Yes, I believe that Sara fit well in the chief position and was her own best destiny. Any other assignment might be a waste of material. Plus I am not officially part of star fleet so I officially can’t keep the position unless dictated by my government and Starfleet agrees to that.” Pawl said sounding more Vulcan than attended to. “As for other duties on the ship. I believe I can be an asset in other areas too. I can work in other engineering and or support services like transport operations to Shuttlebay along with helm. Etc. I do have a small background in Medical/Metal health since I was at the University of Betazed as a field medic and counselor assistant.” Pawl said with a small fleeting smile. “I am open to learning new areas as well” PAwl finished

Chris gestured with hand. “Please have a seat Pawl. Do you want anything to drink? I’m getting some coffee. I have coffee, tea and water but I can have something brought up for you.”.

Pouring himself a cup of coffee and whatever Pawl wanted if anything and brought those back to a seat right across from from, he say the cup down very gently and sighed a bit. “Please give me a moment to think how I’m going to say this to you. And again. I’m not mad, just thinking. Ok?”

After a few moments and another sip of coffee he looked Pawl in the eye. “No. Lieutenant Lovejoy cannot be the Chief Engineer.”. He said flatly. “You have the right to accept or decline the position Pawl. But you can’t give it to someone else. You can recommend someone but only I can appoint or give the position away. Do you follow?”

“Miss Lovejoy is capable of being the Chief Engineer, but not on this ship. Our missions have become irrational and dangerous. She does not have the… What’s that word?…grit. sand, the metal to handle those situations since she’s left. Now with training and department wide exercises to train her up and the team, then there is a chance for her to become the CE once again here, but that will take time. You’re more than welcome to start that process but remember and tell her this as well. That is no guarantee that she’ll get the post. Are you still tracking what I’m saying sir?”

“And I’m worried that her arrival and manipulating of the minds and words to you by constantly bringing up to you the fact that she used to be the Chief Engineer is extremely unsettling. I got an anonymous report from one of your JO’s about that. And another that states that you gave her some light work to do when she arrived. Which is a good thing. But she ended up doing a complete level one diagnostic. Only a very few number of beings on this ship can order that Pawl. The XO, Commander Gray, myself and you. She didn’t get your approval. I would like for you to give her a reprimand on that. You can handle that at your level.”

“Think about if we suddenly got attacked, boarded, or needed to go somewhere else to rescue someone. We would’ve been screwed with nothing working or being off-line and no one in Command or Engineering would’ve know why something wasn’t working.”

“Do not get me wrong Pawl. I don’t hate or have any ill will or bad feelings towards Miss Lovejoy. As Captain of this great ship of ours, I have to set aside personal feelings in order to make the best decisions to save our lives. I really hope you understand that.”

Taking a moment to drink more coffee before going on. “Pawl. You’re a very capable officer and I will approve your request to go to the Helm if that’s what you wish, but I’ll need for you to find me a new Chief Engineer. And I’m the meantime, I will authorize you to work half a week as CE and the other half as a Helmsman. You can make Lieutenant Lovejoy your Assistant and she can help you run engineering while your away, but she will follow your orders, schedules and reports. She will have to sell out permission for almost everything until she proves herself again. Understood? Now I’ll be quiet and listen to what you have to say.”. Refiling his coffee her took another sip while waiting for Pawl.

Pawl listened to the captain and what he had said. “Ice water please?” Pawl requested calmly to the man. Pawl grabbed his water and took a sip. As he continued to listen to him. Pawl nodded his acknowledgment of the captain’s reasoning for his giving Miss Lovejoy her current location or assignment. Pawl was not sure why the captain was thinking that he was being manipulated or cohursed into the change of command or position. There was none. but he was right about the error that she had made running the level one diagnostic. but that could have happened from when she was still thinking she was still in her chief engineer position to make sure the ship was still operational just out of error. He would have noticed it that was out of carelessness or malice. Pawl sighed hard before he spoke. “I understand sir why you decided on your course of action. As for myself being affected by Miss Lovejoy and her loss of position. There is none. Still rather confused by that statement. but moved on. I will give her a verbal warning about overstepping her duties or authority since she is not the chief engineer any longer. about the level one procedure without asking first for permission. If you wish that it be forced into her records as an officer mark of error that is your choice but I don’t see it as a major fopaw just a minor error.” PAwl finished. Pawl was feeling a bit trapped in the middle about what his future will now hold. As he fell silent as he took a large drink of water. He did not bother brining up anything further about helm or other assignments possibly to try.

Chris listened very well to what Pawl had to say and when he was finished retorted. “Pawl. You are the Department Head and you will decide what to give her and where it should go. I will not interfere with your methods or command.” He smiled before getting up to refill his coffee and to get Pawl another ice water. Bringing the water back to Pawl and sitting out down in front of him, he continued.

“Ok. Train her up and get her back to speed. This will take some time and I know you’ll do it right. Start by having localized training senerios then move it up to group, Department then finally ship level. Once she passes all of that, with flying colors, then you can do a change of command ceremony and she will be the new CE. Is that fair to you and alright with you? Be honest and upfront me. You have freedom of speech and I will not hold anything against you. Ok?” He turned to look out the window while he let Pawl think and turned back around when Pawl started speaking again.

“Now. Again Mr. Batario. Where would you like to go? We have enough doctors and I guess the Counselor could use a hand but we are at minimum crew right now. Would you like to learn Bridge duties? Helm, Navigation, Tactical, XO, then CO responsibilities? We can do what you want to do Pawl. You’re not a prisoner here. You’re our most honored guest. The Chernov and her crew are proud to have you.” He said with a genuine smile.

Pawl listened quietly as the captain spoke. “Thank you for the refill. Sir!” He said politely to the man. “I will train her and no rush jobs and do them properly to all protocols and service procedures.” Pawl added calmly. “More book learning and to practical application and supervision during the time making sure there are no shortcuts or nothing that will interfere with the safety and operations of the ship.” Pawl said as he fell silent. “I understand sir after all is cleared and passed everything with flying colors as you put it then after approval by you and others making sure she had done well. before a switching ceremony will be set into motion.” Pawl added. “Yes, sir that is fair.” as he took a large drink of the water. pawl listened more to the captain before he spoke again. “I am not sure where I would go but Bridge duties might be a good start for me to advance but I am not wanting to rush into or through a career tract too fast. I would like a fair turn at all of the positions on the bridge. I won’t take a command position or xo areas until I have a better understanding of the command structures and procedures. Which is a fairly logical station to follow.” Pawl said as he fell quiet as he took a final drink of his water. “Thank you for listening and giving me a chance to understand everything.” Pawl said with a small smile. As the final words sunk into his mind about being an honored guest and the ship was proud of him and having him there made him smile even bigger.

“Very well Mr. Batario. How about we put you on the helm to learn to fly the ship. It is one thing to fix it and another to know her in a different way. Flying her will get you the total package of truly understanding how she not only operates but moves. Then when you feel like it and have a firm grasp of that, we’ll move you to tactical. Knowing how ships fly will make your tactics better because of your understanding of their maneuvers.”

“Thank you, sir! That will be a great set to know more about this very fine ship.” Pawl said with a smile. And your right if I know the handling of the ship I can anticipate a better firing order and make things easier to avoid incoming fire.” Pawl added.
