Chris wanted to check-up on his new Chief Weapons Officer and to relay some news to him. Walking into the turbolift from his quarters. “Deck 8”. Only a few short seconds later he found himself in the hallway heading towards the Brig and Armory. He made a mental note to stop by the brig on his way back to check on the crew there but his destination was the Armory, more specifically, the Chief Weapons Officers office. pressing the scanning himself into the armory he allowed the doors to open when he saw one of the armors at a bench working on a phaser. Walking up behind him and not identifying himself, which Chris liked to do sometimes to gauge a persons true worth, he spoke. “Excuse me sir. Where can I find the Chief Weapons Officer?”

Captain Chris Taggart, CO

The Petty Officer looked up from his work and then stood erect at seeing the captain, “Sir!” He said, “Lt. Dawson should be in his office, just down the hall sir.” The crewman pointed down the way before asking, “Would you like me to escort you sir?”

“At ease sir. No. I’ll manage on my own. I don’t want to interrupt any more than I have. Good day to you.” With that the captain nodded and left down the hall. Once at the CWO door he knocked.

Captain Chris Taggart CO

Dawson heard the knock and furrowed his eyebrows as he looked up from the personnel files he had been reviewing. “Enter,” he said watching the door. The inside of his office had already been decorated accordingly. His desk was set up facing the door with his back to a large window looking out at the space that raced past them. On the wall to his right, a visitor’s left were various melee weapons ranging from broadswords to sabers to alien weapons such as the Vulcan lirpa and a recreated Klingon Bat’leth. On the right was a bookshelf holding shelves of beautifully bound leather books. Next to that were various starship models in gold and silver. Hanging behind Dawson above the window was the epee his father had given him that bore the Dawson Family Crest at the hilt. He also had his KaBar knife in a sheath hidden behind the desk in easy reach, but his hands were nowhere near it.

Lt. Dawson, CWO

Seeing the furrowed look the captain politely did, “I could come back another time if you’d like? I was just wondering how you’re getting along on the Chernov and I have a PaDD here with some information about your sister on it.”

Dawson stood at seeing Taggart enter. “Of course sir,” he said gesturing to the seat opposite him, “I was just going over some personnel files. Just trying to familiarize myself with the security team.” As they sat, Dawson couldn’t help his gaze shifting to the PaDD in the Captain’s hand.

He gave a smirk then relaxed it. “You are as much a collector of blades as I am of Hellraiser it appears.” As he looked around the room.

Captain Chris Taggart CO

Dawson’s eyes snapped to Taggart’s at the comment and he gave a smile. “Yes sir,” he said sheepishly, “I have always had an appreciation for swords and other melee weapons.” Dawson’s eyes drifted again to the PaDD and he swallowed, not wanting to seem too eager. He cleard his throat as he said, “What, mm, what have you been able to find, sir?”

-LT. Dawson, CWO

“That’s great! I love a very capable Weapons Officer. It helps to save the crew.” Smiling when he heard the second question and not realizing he was still holding the PaDD, he slid it gently over to Dawson. “My apologies. I didn’t mean to make you wait. I glanced at it but really didn’t read it. That is very confidential material there Lieutenant. I had to pull a few strings, call in some favors and owe a few favors myself now. But what I do know, is that is the complete top secret report. I’m just going to walk around and admire your cutlery while you look over the information, if you don’t mind. I’ll be here if you have questions.” With that, Chris walked over to a brilliant looking Sabre with a gold and silver threaded handle and a gold hand guard with a ruby at the pomel. Damn! That’s nice! He said to himself.

OOC: Please feel free to make up any and all information about your sister. Is she still alive and if so where, etc.. We can go and recover her or her body if you’d like. It’s your character building that were doing here. Have fun.

Captain Chris Taggart CO

As Taggart made his way around the room, Dawson began to read. The more he read the wider his eyes grew. He couldn’t believe what was in front of him. When he was done, he looked up at Taggert, color draining from his face. “Sir, you said you only skimmed this?”

Swallowing, or rather, attempting to but finding his mouth dry and instead clearing his throat, Dawson said, “According to this file, We are not the first to be investigating a strange cube in space. Apparently, my sister’s ship was sent to investigate something similar… in Klingon space. That seems to be why it was classified. They sent them through the neutral zone in an attempt to discern if this was some kind of unknown Klingon weapon, and then they lost contact. They seem to assume that something went wrong with the mission and that the ship was self-destructed in order to hide Federation involvement, but nothing was ever recovered.”

Dawson remembered what Taggart had said about doing what he could to find out what happened to his sister. From what he knew of Chris, in his short time aboard the Chernov, he seemed the kind of captain who go to hell and back for one of his crew. If Dawson asked, Taggart might fly them to the heart of the Klingon Empire, just to give Q the closure of knowing his sister was indeed dead. But Dawson had a responsibility to the ship above any kind of closure. Standing up, eyes ahead, he said, “Sir, I can’t ask you to pursue this. I know I could use our investigation of the alien cube as a reason to have us look into what happened to my sister, but I cannot ask you to risk the safety of the crew and the federation as a whole just to give me answers. Not only could our presence alone start a war, but should the Klingons ever find out my sister and her ship were there, could lead to an international incident that could see the end of the Federation. As the Chief Weapons Officer, the security of this ship must always be my top priority.” It killed him to have to say it. To have to leave his sister out there, where he couldn’t find her. It felt like losing her all over again. And that feeling he had worked so hard to bury in himself, was beginning to surface again. That feeling that was almost his ruin so many years ago. That hope. The hope that told him his sister was still alive. Still out there. Waiting for someone to save her. Waiting for him to save her. In England, where he grew up, they had a saying, “it’s the hope that kills you.” Dawson knew it to be true.
