SNIP“You know what I think,” Jessica said with her head still on his chest letting it rise and fall with his breathing. She knew Aedan thought he was going to get a pep talk about him being never being anything and his perspective was a bit skewed. Instead, she took a different route. The pep talk would come at another time.
Aedan found himself gently stroking her hair as he kissed the top of it, “What do you think pumpkin?”
“I think you are going to make a great dad.” Turning in his arms, she shifted positions so that her back was leaning on him and his hands rested on her tummy. “You are going to give our baby everything you never had. You are going to make sure that Bump and I are always loved, secure, and want for nothing,” she leaned her head to the side snuggling his arm a bit. “And I don’t mean money. Aedan the world sees you in one way. I am not sure why you think they need to but that is okay because I see you as the only man I want to spend the rest of my life with. Even if we had nothing we would have your strength and love. That is all I will ever need or ask of you. You don’t need to create a past any longer. You have a future with me and us,” she rubbed the back of his hands on her belly, “and we will write it the way we want. Screw everyone else,” she let out a half laugh. “You did get that part right. We don’t need them. We never have.”
Lt. Commander Jessica Vaughn, XO
“I know, it’s why I was so willing to throw in with you. I found the person I wanted and needed, few have come in my life genuinely caring. Adams did, she proved she respects me and I her, and a few others in my life. You my love, showed me I can let you in and expect nothing, yet get everything” he said as he gently caressed her belly, feeling his heart warm as he knew they would be having a small child.

Walking into the room Evie immediately saw the person she was looking for. He was facing the wrong direction with someone in his arms. Evie hoped it was Jessica. Having two girlfriends was always problematic but having two girlfriends where one was pregnant was a train wreck waiting to happen. “Aedan, I need a word with you please,” Evie said softly but firmly. Jessica and Aedan could snuggle all they wanted later. Evie needed him and all his attention at the moment.
Aedan paused as he looked over. Letting go of Jessica his eyes narrowed onto Evie. She was one he hadn’t decided on. She wanted his money yes, but she didn’t seem to want to abuse it. She genuinely just wanted a small shop and to help the people of the outpost, and maybe find a date for her son. Aedan couldn’t fault her for that
“Good evening Evie. Your place looks amazing,” Jessica said moving to Aedan’s side taking his hand. “I love this section of your bar. It has a....cozy feel,” she looked for an adjective to describe the distinctly man cave feel mixed with modernism.
“Jessica,” Evie smiled and let out the long breath she was holding. It was not that she doubted Aedan. It was not that she doubted Jessica. It was more that Evie doubted the rest of the universe. Jessica was beautiful, Aedan rich. The combination meant the couple would struggle like all young couples did. “Have you eaten? You should eat something,” Evie said in a motherly tone. “And maybe if you don’t mind I could speak to Aedan,” she asked the XO.
Jessica had no idea why Evie wanted to talk to Aedan but it was clearly very important and very private. “Yes please keep him busy so I can get a cup of coffee in peace.” Kissing Aedan on the cheek quickly, Jessica gave him no time to change her mind. Evie’s arrival was more than opportune. Jessica had something to do and it would be easier without Aedan tagging along. “Be nice to Evie. She is old and doesn’t have long to live,” she whispered to Aedan, winked, and gave him a slightly warning look before walking out of the room.
“You two surprise me,” Evie said watching Jessica leave. “Jessica needs someone who will take care of her and you need someone to remind you how normal people live,” she smiled. “Come with me,” Evie said to Aedan walking to the door. “I need to show you something.”

EVIE’S OFFICEEntering the office, Evie sat down on the small couch in there rather than at the desk. She wanted this conversation to be personal because it was personal. “Aedan,” Evie said taking on her mom persona. “I was wondering if I could ask you a question?”
Evie McGarrett
Aedan looked closely at her, wondering what this built up had been all about. “What questions?” he asked her. He wasn’t rude in his mannerisms, but he definitely gave a vibe like he didn’t want to be doing this now at this hour.
~Aedan Teller
Evie looked at Aedan for a long moment taking in all his features. “May I ask what happened earlier between you and Jessica,” she asked gently. There was no easy way to bring up the conversation she wanted to have. All Evie hoped was that she could ease into it.

Aedan looked at her, his eyes narrowed a bit as he thought on her question. “Look Evie, I don’t know you. You seem to want to be close to me. You’re sweet, maybe you’ll be a good business partner. Why the interest in me?” he asked her, it wasn’t an answer to her question but in it’s own subtle way a dead set no to her question. He paced the room a bit, wondering why he was even indulging her right now. She wasn’t someone he hated, or even disliked. Aedan just didn’t open up to many, and the Captains mom wasn’t really someone he wanted to just indulge all his dirty details.
“Would you prefer I pretend you don’t exist and just take your money,” Evie said. “I am from an older generation that actually cares about people. Well, not all people. Some are dorks you avoid but for the most part, it doesn’t cost one to be nice or worry about someone other than themselves for ten minutes. I accept your apology,” Evie said even though Aedan in no way shape or form had given an indication he would say he was sorry. Evie had just been a mom for a long time. First to her own three children and then to scores more fresh recruits to Starfleet over the years.
“I’m sorry… you didn’t deserve that. You didn’t do anything wrong either.” he said as he ran his hand through his hair. “This isn’t my day.” he said as he moved over to the liquor counter, he insisted if she was going to have an office she get one put in. His money his rules, and this time he was feeling like it was the best choice ever.
~Aedan Teller
Evie didn’t say a word but activated her comm badge and ordered a bacon cheeseburger to her office. “If you are going to keep drinking you need to eat something.” Shifting slightly on the couch so she could watch Aedan, Evie continued. “Now to answer your question, of why I am interested in you....it is simple. You need someone to take care of you,” Evie said. “You are not the first lonely kid to cross my path and before you say you are not a kid,” Evie raised a finger to make him pause, “anyone young enough to be one of my kids is always going to be a kid to me. Now, this is what we are going to do. You can pour me one of those but mix it with something. I am not one for straight booze. Then you can tell me what is troubling you maybe. I promise I will listen and not talk or judge you okay.” Evie was not sure Aedan would talk to her. If he didn’t it would not change what she wanted to talk about with him. Evie just wanted Aedan to be as relaxed as possible before she started.

“I’ve never needed a mom Evie, she certainly didn’t need me.” he said with a cold tone to his voice as he poured the drink. Coming to her he handed it to her as he sat across from her. “I didn’t make it where I was cause anyone ever once had sympathy on me.” he said as he looked at Evie. He couldn’t help but feel she felt genuine, his bravado maybe something he used on most people but for her it seemed misplaced. “That said, true friends I find are very hard. You claim that’s all you want to be, no pretense just someone to listen to. I want to know why? You… you don’t know me, what I have done, what I am capable of… so why do you give a damn about me so much?”
~Aedan Teller
“First off I don’t l like you out of sympathy. Sometimes you are such an arse I want to slap you and put you in the corner but you are a bit big for that. Second, I give a darn about you because you are are a decent guy that was dealt a bad hand a long time ago. I can tell decent people. I have had three more decades of life to sort out people than you. I know you are decent because of the way you look at Jessica. You might be a dork to the rest of the universe at times but you want to do right by her or maybe by your kiddo on the way. Either way, you are invested in one or both of them,” Evie took a sip of her drink. Maybe she was right or wrong on her character analysis of Aedan but he asked and she was giving him an answer.
“I was in love with Jessica long before I learned of our child, I may not have expected.. bump as she likes to call it, but…” Aedan felt like he wanted to say more, sometimes you just needed to open but he has long ago trained himself to ignore such feelings. Letting yourself show your weaknesses just meant you gave someone a chance to exploit you. If anything Aedan exploited, found weaknesses used them to his gain. It’s how he took over OMAP from it’s previous owner, though they had a wicked sin that reviled Aedan. He had little guilt from stealing a company from such a vile man.
“She likes to call it? What do you like to call it,” Evie honed in on one part of his answer.
“Honestly? I find bump endearing. We don’t know it’s sex yet, haven’t even began to think of names. Bump is such a Jessica thing, it makes me smile.” he said simply, but she smallest of smiles on his face would show how much he truly did enjoy it all.
“So do you want the child because you want a kid or do you want the baby because she wants the baby. It is okay if your answer is the latter. I am not going to judge you and there is no right or wrong answer to that. Heck when I told Richard we were having Mathias I wasn’t sure if he was going to go buy a catcher’s mitt or book the first ticket off Ravis IV,” she laughed. From a long-married and woman’s point of view wanting a baby more than the mother is bound to cause issues. “I only ask because you seem to be talking about Bump as if it is a matter of fact and not something that is going to change your life forever. So on a scale of one to ten how much has Bump freaked you out?” Evie got a sly smile thinking about his future. Looking at Aedan, she could not help but like the guy. He was arrogant and a slight narcissistic. He was spoiled and used to getting what he want when he wanted it. This was, however, the old and terminal Aedan. The new and improved Aedan would be surfacing in about six months. Kicking and screaming maybe as much as his newborn baby would be but it would be the new Aedan nonetheless. Past all the character flaws he seemed to want to be defined as, Aedan would turn this protective and confident nature on his child. Luckily Jessica would be there to balance him out. There was the possibility however that Aedan was purely selfish, egotistical and manipulative. Time would tell but Evie still would bet on Teller every time to be the anti-hero.
“My relationship and connection to Jessica and our child is none of your concern Evie. I am very much looking forward to my child, that’s all you need to be aware of.” he said with an almost matter of fact tone. He didn’t really care for her questioning. He truly did love the idea of a little him and a little Jessica, he was shocked at first yes but he knew he wanted to be a father. It was as if a switch went off when he heard, something he never knew he needed or wanted. Jessica was much the same way, he never knew he needed her till he had her. Now he couldn’t picture his life without either of them.
Holding her drink in one hand she pointed a finger at Aedan. “If you were the playboy in the holomagazines you would not have freaked out about the pictures she hung on the wall. Yeah I saw that. I missing nothing,” she smiled at him. “You would also have had every photographer for 10 parsecs here showing you giving back to the community. I mean this was a PR dream. Old lady with no money who Aedan funds making her dream come true and asking nothing in return. Jessica on your arm with half a dozen shots showing her baby bump and your patting it. The only catch is that Jessica doesn’t like the attention. She hates it. The PR shots, the paparazzi, the stray journalist that hits her up at least once a week wanting to know the in’s and out’s of your relationship. Some are more aggressive than others. As the XO she deals with it but she hates it and you know that which is why no media coverage. You also want something private and real. You are not out to sell your story or promote your image. You want a normal life. Bad dinners, boring nights in sweatpants, fights with the missus, and maybe a place you can kick back where nobody knows your name.” Evie leaned back in her seat looking at Aedan as if they had a far deeper connection than half a year. The man across from her was an adult. He ran a multi-billion credit company. He was about to be a father and a husband but he was also scared, alone, and had no one to talk to. All she wanted was for him to know she was there for him if he needed it or wanted it.
“Maybe I had an off day, you didn’t even get a chance to see what I planned.” Aedan said, it was a lie of course. While it was elegant of an opening, she was right. He hadn’t told the press or anyone for that matter he was doing this. He wanted in the end just something pretty for Jessica to look nice in. She deserved a chance to look beautiful for everyone there and he loved seeing her smile.
“And lastly you are not the only person in this room or on this station who has done terrible things,” Evie’s voice has a sharper mom lecture tone to it than earlier in the conversation. “The degree of terrible doesn’t matter. You think it does but it doesn’t. If it haunts someone’s dreams and they would sell their soul to the devil to go back and change it, it is terrible. You never know what someone is capable of until they do it. I have my share of terrible that haunts me. The trick is, for the people you do love, never hold their past against them. ” Evie reached out and took Aedan’s hand in hers. “I don’t know what horrible things you are capable of but I also haven’t seen your full potential. That is why I am so invested in you. I think you have great things coming and I want to be there to see them.”
Evie McGarrett
Aedan moved his hand away as he rolled his eyes. “You want to absolve my sins? Is that it?” he said as he shook his head. “I don’t think you have enough goodwill love to even come close to that. You can talk about your past like it haunts you, but you didn’t grow up in a gutter fighting for everything. Steal, fight, kill… it was all the same. You did what was needed, used anyone that needed to be used. The thing is, I’m not haunted by what I did… I had to do it. I am not looking for absolution or forgiveness. I don’t regret my past, and I certainly don’t dwell in it either.” he said as his eyes narrowed on her, he wasn’t liking a delving into what he felt was ancient history, he buried it among his enemies for a reason.
Aedan stood as he paced the room, he doubted she was done with her pow wow but felt little obligation to stay and continue. “Do you have anything else you want to bring up? Or are we quite finished here?”
