“Sir” the Sabre’s doctor came over to Aedan. His face held the expression of someone who was bearing bad news. His hands held a PaDD towards his body and his fingers gripped it like he was unsure whether he should hold it tight or pass it over. He had no idea which results his boss wanted so the doctor was unsure if the results would please Teller or not. “Since we do not have a DNA profile on your parents we had to do an Avuncular profile. This type of test is used in cases like yours where the parents are not available for some reason.”

Jessica took Aedan’s hand in hers. She was unsure why the doctor seemed so tense. A positive result would change Aedan’s life just as much as a negative one. The negative one would mean Aedan was still alone in the world. His hope of finding a family would be over but he had his own family with her and the baby now. Jessica would never let anything take that way from him even if she had to give up everything and move to the farthest reaches of space for them to be together. A positive result would mean Aedan now had a family and all the responsibilities that came with it.

“The term avuncular, which means”

“Just spit things out, I don’t pay you for medical jargon.” Aedan insisted.

“Aedan,” Jessica said a bit frustrated. He was using what she called his business voice. It was the same tone used by Admirals and Fleet Commanders when someone below them was trying to give a report and the ranking officer only wanted a two to three-word answer. “He is just trying to do his job. This is a bit more delicate than you have a cold, take two hypos and I will see you in the morning.” While Aedan had never been blunt like this with her Jessica had heard this vocal cadence from Aedan during business calls when he was at home. “Please continue doctor.”

“Yes, the one I pay him to do…” Aedan said as he looked at her, but softened a little as he looked back at the doctor. “Please, do continue.”

“As you know from basic biology all humans are born with two sets of DNA from their parents meaning you inherit 50% form your mother and 50% from your father. Since we did not have parental samples we had to use a parental sibling sample. Evelyn McGarrett, if she was your mother’s sister would mean that 25% of your DNA would match hers however this is not 100% accurate,” the doctor began to explain the how of the results and not the results.

“So the tests would not be conclusive,” Jessica asked. Aedan would never be satisfied with 25% of anything. Now she understood why the doctor was a bit nervous. She could feel Aedan intaking a breath of air ready to remind the doctor to keep it short and simple.

“Yes and no. I took the liberty of cross-referencing Evie’s family in the federation medical records. We are lucky because she has a brother. This allowed us to do an Y-STR or Y-chromosome typing. While most DNA is passed through MtDNA, the Y chromosome does allow the male to male lineage to be passed increasing the accuracy of these such tests. Based on the results,” the doctor passed the PaDD to Aedan as he spoke. “You have a 95% probability of being the nephew of Mrs. Evelyn McGarrett.”

Sabre Doctor.

Aedan looked at the PaDD, then up at those in the room. “Thank you Doctor Acula, you may go.” he said, his tone a bit more gentle than before as he looked over at Jessica and Evie. He wasn’t quite sure how to take this, but at the same he didn’t feel at all changed either. It would take time for him to let it all sink in, still he knew he couldn’t just ignore the weight of all this.

“Do…” Aedan started, but for the first time ever seemed lost for words. He made his job to know all and tell everyone but at this moment, he just didn’t know what to say.

Jessica had no idea what to do or say at this moment. She had never seen Aedan speechless. Even when she came to him one month after meeting him and told him she was pregnant Aedan had a lot ot say that night. “Baby,” Jessica said rubbed his back slightly much like one did when someone was getting sick. “Baby are you okay?”

“Yes, he is just a bit shocked. More like gut-punched,” Evie said sliding off the table and walking towards Aedan. Jessica slid off Aedan’s lap and moved aside as Evie stood before Aedan. She didn’t care how he reacted at this moment. She only knew how she felt. Leaning down, Evie wrapped her arms around his neck and held him. She worked hard not to cry. Evie had dreamt about this moment for years however, she had always thought it would be Elizabeth by some quirk of fate that she would find and not her sister’s child. Evie felt tears begin to brim her eyes. “I’m sorry,” she whispered as she laid her head on Aedan’s shoulder. She was not apologizing to Aedan for anything. She had no idea Elizabeth had had a child and could not be held accountable for Teller having a crappy childhood. She was apologizing to her sister for allowing a petty family squabble affect so many lives. If she had just tried to contact Elizabeth instead of waiting for her parents to do it, things would have been very different. Aedan would have been raised as her child. he would have had a family. He would have lived a different life.

Evie McGarrett

Aedan didn’t reply, he let her hug him but didn’t show much in return. He did feel numb but he wasn’t going to push Evie away. She was effected to in all this, despite his heart feeling torn he knew this would change everything. He wasn’t quite sure if it was for the better or not, he felt nothing at all in fact.

“So maybe I should leave you two alone for a bit to digest this,” Evie said letting him go and looking up at Aedan. She didn’t expect anything but this reaction. Aedan was processing so much and she would give him time to think about it. She also had to go break the news the someone else who probably would have the same reaction. Walking to the door, Evie turned back and looked at Jessica and Aedan.

“Oh family Sunday dinner is at 6. It is casual. Just don’t be late.”

Jessica tried to stifle a laugh. In so many ways Evie was like Aedan. To her both people often said thing as a statement of fact and everyone seemed to just fall in line. God’s day of rest just might become more interesting now.

Aunt Evie

“Yeah that’s not gonna happen…” Aedan said as he looked up, “Least not for now… maybe.” he said as he squinted an eye but shook his head slightly. “I’ll think about it.”

As Evie left he looked over at Jessica, he wasn’t sure what to feel quite, but he wanted her here with him all the same. “Thank you for staying.” he said softly as he looked down and pondered how this all changed. Or did it change anything? He wasn’t quite sure it did, what did relatives really truly mean to him anyway?

~Aedan Teller

“Because there is anywhere else I would be in this moment,” Jessica looked at him a bit oddly. Suddenly Jessica saw Aedan differently. For the first time, she saw him vulnerable. He was not making plans or finding the advantage in the situation. Aedan was in the moment and appeared to be finding no way out. “Hey,” she said moving in front of him and leaning her face to meet his downward gaze. “Talk to me or maybe,” she tucked up under his chin and curled up on his chest, “I can just hold you for a bit. We don’t need to talk but maybe we can go to your cabin. Curl up and just be still looking at the stars until we fall asleep.” Jessica leaned in the best she could even though bump prevented her from fitting perfectly in his arms as she once had. She had no idea what to say or what to do. All Jessica knew was that she was going to hold his hand and stand with Aedan. Tonight was a time where she did not put a positive or negative spin on anything. She would let him lead her where he needed to go and Jessica would follow him no matter where he led her.

Bump

“Come on, I need to go home… get a drink… we can talk more there? I don’t know if I can think straight, and you in your baby brain self I think might be a bit better than me making any choices.” he said as he wrapped his arms around her pulling her close to kiss her softly.
