Measured breaths came and went before Dira replied in a soft tone. “Before.” She didn’t have to say more but she would. However, she already understood that for Bob it would elucidate the interactions on that doomed away mission so much more.

She sighed. “Look, he was never going to take my interference well, regardless of what you did. But you showed him that his actions were making him lose whatever respect people might have had for him, and in his mind it was unforgivable. because you backed me up and I am this mixed thing in his mind. He hates me one moment, and doesn’t the next. And that’s why he’s given you such a hard time.” Her face shifted into something amounting to regret. ‘I’m sorry, Bob. Maybe I should have told you this before, but… doctor-patient confidentiality. That and I was handling it… sort of. As best I could, anyway.”

“No,” he said. “I mean, ‘No, you shouldn’t have told me before.’ It wouldn’t have mattered. Backing you up isn’t exactly what I was doing there, even if that’s the way it played out. I would have still acted the same way because he nearly did get us all killed. It would have probably been worse for me, because it would have just been me saying something.”

“There is that,” Dira conceded. “I was more saying that after the fall out, when he was being a jerk to those on the away team, especially you and I, that I should have told you about my history with Franks.” She shrugged. “I don’t know though. It’s actually still very confusing for me.” It was a hard thing to admit since so many people expected her to know everything, even if they didn’t realize it. Bob though, he had been probably the one person in recent years who she cold actually let her guard down a bit with.

He couldn’t help but think that he wouldn’t have made that dartboard, instead choosing to use the genuine article instead.

She smirked slightly, but said nothing about his rather random thought. Leaning back, Dira sighed slightly, gazing off into the mess hall again. “As much as I wanted to be Elise’s XO, I’m glad we’re going to the Ogawa. Already I feel so much more at ease with some separation from that man, and it’s nice to feel that it’s finally over, you know?”
