Dira shifted in her seat as the wash of discomfort moved over her. What could she say really? There was much that her oath of confidentiality forbade her to say but if she tucked away the truly confidential details, there were things she could still share. Gazing off to the side, she pondered this dilemma as a slight frown shifted into her face. She sighed. “I can’t say a lot, but I can say that he had moments where he required my help. But, as can happen when a therapist works with someone very closely, transference can happen.” Her gaze flicked to Mason and her discomfort was evident. “My attempts to create boundaries did not go over very well and ever since our interactions have been… difficult.” An understatement if there ever was one, but perhaps Bob would understand that the mission gone awry had just been the final straw.

“Oh.”

It was said quietly, but conveyed understanding of what was not actually said. His frustrations with the man had faded away, and something darker and more angry started taking their place.

“Was that before or after our mission, if you can say?”

Measured breaths came and went before Dira replied in a soft tone. “Before.” She didn’t have to say more but she would. However, she already understood that for Bob it would elucidate the interactions on that doomed away mission so much more.

She sighed. “Look, he was never going to take my interference well, regardless of what you did. But you showed him that his actions were making him lose whatever respect people might have had for him, and in his mind it was unforgivable. because you backed me up and I am this mixed thing in his mind. He hates me one moment, and doesn’t the next. And that’s why he’s given you such a hard time.” Her face shifted into something amounting to regret. ‘I’m sorry, Bob. Maybe I should have told you this before, but… doctor-patient confidentiality. That and I was handling it… sort of. As best I could, anyway.”

“No,” he said. “I mean, ‘No, you shouldn’t have told me before.’ It wouldn’t have mattered. Backing you up isn’t exactly what I was doing there, even if that’s the way it played out. I would have still acted the same way because he nearly did get us all killed. It would have probably been worse for me, because it would have just been me saying something.”

He couldn’t help but think that he wouldn’t have made that dartboard, instead choosing to use the genuine article instead.
