<snip>Ria simply nodded, feeling unable to utter even a single word. And as she lay down on the biobed, Riani was fighting tears. What was supposed to be standard medical evaluation was horrible and humiliating enough without adding tears into the mix. Scanning her once again, Brad would see again that most of her bruises were on her arms and legs, and two on her hip. All of them were relatively small and in various stages of healing. Some weren’t even visible to the naked eye anymore due to the colour of her skin. Yet other than that she seemed to be fine. There were no signs of an underlying health condition, lack of certain vitamins or signs that she was taking any medications or supplements that had blood thinning effects. It seemed that she had not only figuratively, but also literally thin skin.

‘Interesting,’ Brad thought. ‘I’ve never seen anything like this.’
“Alright, you can sit up now,” he said. “I just wanted to see if there was an underlying condition that made you more prone to bruising, because that would be something we’d need to know to treat you if you ever had something serious happen,” he explained. “You don’t, by the way.”
This was starting to feel awkward. He hadn’t made a girl cry in nearly 30 years, and never by accident…

Chief of StaffSitting back up, Riani mumbled, “Okay.” She still felt like she was about to burst into tears and like she had a lump in her throat. What she really wanted was to leave. Yet bolting out of sickbay didn’t seem like a smart idea. So instead she stayed put while struggling to keep a handle on her emotions. Glancing briefly up at Brad, she added meekly, “I’m sorry I’m causing so much trouble.”

“It’s not an imposition,” Brad said gently. “Checking up on the crew, making sure you’re at your best and figuring out how to get you there if you’re not is literally what we’re here for. If we don’t have patients in here, some of the junior doctors commandeer the empty beds to ‘refresh their anatomy studies’ and Lord knows it’s a pain to pull them off each other and make them disinfect the place.”
Cmdr. Dr. Brad Walker
Chief of Staff“Okay,” whispered Riani meekly. Yet as Brad continued a mildly perplexed expression crossed her face and she asked confusedly, “Wouldn’t it be much easier to study anatomy with holograms?” To her that would make much more sense, yet maybe there was a benefit to looking at actually people instead of holograms.

Brad let out a chuckle and gave a sly smirk to Riani. “Easier, maybe, if they were actually revising. It’s a euphemism, Ensign.”

Chief of StaffFor a couple more moments Ria looked at him confusedly, trying to figure out what he meant. When it finally clicked, a soft “oh” escaped her lips and she turned scarlet once again.
~Ensign Iyun, Scientist
“Yup,” Brad said. “So you can see why I’d rather keep them busy doing literally anything else.”
Cmdr. Dr. Brad Walker
Chief of StaffRiani nodded silently, her cheeks still flaming red. “Uhm…,” she started, took a deep breath and swallowed and then tried again. “Is there anything else you need from me, Sir?”
~Ensign Iyun, Scientist
Brad hit a flurry of buttons on the biobed, his PaDD and his tricorder, signing off on Iyun’s physical. “Nope, you’re all signed-off and good to go. Just make sure to visit the counselor, and remember to drop by anytime you injure yourself.”
