Joe stood in the infirmary and drank a bottle of water that had been handed to him. His medical tunic was rumpled slightly over the billowing black robes and his hood had been pushed back to reveal his alabaster coloured skull. He dabbed at it with a red spotted handkerchief as if he had ours and could sweat. In his hands was an old fashioned wooden broom and he appeared to be sweeping the entire infirmary, the storage and cargo areas everything.

The NE nurse who had taken one look at him and handed him the broom when he had reported for duty smiled. “You definitely know your way around a brush.”

Joe glanced at her. I SHOULD SAY SO…I AM A DENTIST. he said emphasising the last word again. He had tried to tell her he wasn’t the new janitor as she seemed to think but it had done no good. Sometimes, humans especially, people he interacted with just didn’t see him for what he was. Like their brains filtered it out and to protect them gave them an image of what made it less scary. Wether this girl was afraid of skeletons, dentists or whatever he didn’t know but she had decided he was a sweet old man in overalls who had come to sweep and so sweep he now would do. He tilted his skull and considered the room. It was very vexing.

“What’s up?” She asked as she moved some supplies.

I AM TRYING TO WORK OUT THE BEST WAY TO NOW USE THE FLOSS… he muttered quizzically as he discarded the brush and picked up a length of rope like cable in white.

Dr Jarivs stalked into the starbases infirmary, his eyes scanning for anything that might take his interest. They passed over nurses, an old man sweeping, doctors… wait a minute, an old man sweeping? Since when did star-fleet replace the electronic cleaning system with an old man with a broom? His beady eyes snapped back to the individual in the centre of the room. He had to focus slightly more than normal to actually see him for what he really was; a seven-foot skeleton in a black robe with a doctors tunic over the top of it. Well, now, what have we here? Jarvis had been a lot of places and seen a hell of a lot of species, many of which he had operated on, but he had never encountered something like that before. This should be interesting.

Stealthily, he scuttled up behind the ‘thing’, not really knowing what else to call it. “So, who might you be?” he asked in his nasally tone. However, I suspect the more appropriate question is what are you?

Black, had he eyelids, would have blinked at the creeping physician. Instead he turnednhisnskull towards him. ME? his voice asked. He turned and looked around himself as if there was someone else he could be speaking to.

I AM OF COURSE DR BLACK. he said. DENTIST. UHH…DO YOU FLOSS

Jasper looked the tall, thin man up and down. He’d heard words, spoken like two slabs of granite hitting one another, but had not seen the things mouth move. A rather technical tour de force. However, given that the creature seemed to lack anything that resembled muscles, it perhaps would have been more impressive it actually had moved. Something about standing in the creature’s presence made him feel uneasy, like she should run for the nearest airlock and throw himself out. He quickly swatted it away. He was a cautious man, yes, but not when there was a medical marvel like this standing in front of him. In those instances, his curiosity always won out. Besides, you all had to die of something at some point in time. And there were far worse ways to go than while you were pursuing your passion.

“Dr Black,” Dr Jarvis rolled the name around his pointed tongue, “if that’s your real name then I’m a cretinous Klingon. However, since when do star-fleet assign dentists to sweep floors?” He asked the question, but could already come with an answer from his own recent history. When you annoy someone with more pips than you and they decide that their own pettiness ranks higher than ensuring people get the best medical treatment. “And yes, I do floss,” he answered, hoping that a reply would lead to one in kind.

Dr J. Jarvis M.D.

Dr. Black noticed that some of the other crew were starting to act, odd. Stumbling drunk then otherwise being quite normal if somewhat distracted by their feelings. Eventually they would blink a couple of times then look at each other strangely.

Dr Jarvis swayed slightly but was not sure why. He hadn’t tripped over anything nor drunk something alcoholic, yet he was doing it nonetheless. Was someone fiddling about with the gravity controls he wondered?

Dr J. Jarvis M.D

Looking around Dr Black seemed confused.
