“Lieutenant,” Mark said, switching from Doctor. “Ensign M’Nalie being under my command, I will agree with you absolutely. She will keep herself in line or she will remove herself from this vessel. I made this clear to her two hours ago. I gave her an old Marine hand-to-hand training program I had, for getting out her aggressions in her off time in a way that will not harm or threaten anyone. You have a problem with her conduct, come see me. We will either iron it out or drum her out of the fleet, as is appropriate. We each have our departments to run, but we’re in the same crew, let’s not make it unnecessarily difficult.”

Ana didn’t react to Pierce’s use of her Starfleet rank, although her eyes darkened slightly in annoyance at the rest of his words. “I’m unable to provide information regarding my work with crew to their superiors unless it impacts their own safety or the safety of those around them,” she replied, her tone bordering on harshness, although she intended to just give him a reminder. “My goal is not to drum anyone out of the fleet,” she continued, her voice breaking slightly as though she was more insulted than anything else. “I have a duty to keep the crew safe.”

“I just want to work together instead of receiving an order later because someone is suspended for an incident I didn’t know took place. However, if you wish to approach this independently ‘for the safety of the ship’, I will ensure that all engineers comply.”

“I need to set the duty roster for next week before checkout time. Good afternoon, Lt Darren.”

Ana’s face twisted into a look of sheer confusion. Did Pierce think that she should have checked with him before removing M’Nalie from duty? It wasn’t like she had the opportunity to do so while in the middle of calling for security because she was afraid for her life. She turned to leave his office, but paused midway to the door. Turning back, she commented, “I believe you are due for your evaluation as well, Lieutenant. Perhaps we can discuss your need to be informed of every incident on the ship at it.” With that, she made her way out of his office.
