“Are you okay Lieutenant?” Jonathan asked her as he looked her over carefully. He wasn’t sure what kind of behavior to expect out of the young lady but she seemed nervous, almost skitish in some ways. This made him worry and wonder what might be going on yet this wasn’t an examination, least not yet it wasn’t.

Ana blushed slightly again, although her verbal response of “yes, sir” came much faster this time, aware that Reez was studying her and taking the opportunity to eye him back.

Lt Darren, Psychiatrist

“O…kay?” Jonathan said as he looked over at her not quite sure what to do next. “You have to have more than that Lieutenant… you came on this ship you reported to me and… you have nothing? I am not going to just buy that. Tell me about yourself, something… anything.” Jon added feeling as if he was trying to get water from a stone from this woman.

Ana looked momentarily stymied by the question. “About… me?” she repeated back and then bit her lower lip as she pondered an adequate response. She had several responses, in fact, but she wasn’t sure what was the most appropriate when your superior officer demanded to know something about you. It was even more taxing when your superior officer was also a psychiatrist. A moment of wistful longing floated across her face as she recalled how comfortable she had been in the lab with her mentor over the past several years. Change was certainly hard and, for her, perhaps harder than most.

“Um, I’m a voracious reader and I’ve been first author on three peer-reviewed empirical studies on post-traumatic stress syndrome and the effects of conflict on adult relationships,” she finally replied, deciding she adequately covered her bases with a personal fact as well as a professional one.

Lt Darren, Psychiatrist

“Oh come on that’s dull, you could have at least said I would rather not say anything. Leave some mystery.” he said teasing her a bit. He wasn’t quite sure what he thought of the woman before him, she was odd it felt but he was never one to force the issue in meetings like this. People sometimes preferred to give simple and basic answers thinking he was trying to dig far more than he really was. Truth was he simply was trying to get to know the woman. He wasn’t always used to having junior officers in his department as that wasn’t a task on most ships, but on the Ogawa Jon had began to learn to adapt to the concept of a JO underneath him.

“If you want you may go Lieutenant, I don’t mean to make you feel like I am going to try to keep you here. I assume you know where your office is?” it in fact wasn’t a very hard guess, only one free office in this department for her to occupy.
