Mel offered a smile to her fellow scientist. “Well. Mama is increasingly anxious, though not in a bad way. Just anticipating. The eggs should be hatching any time now. I’m guessing the next day or so.”

The male moved over to the female and as they touched, their bodies lit up slightly as they always did when they communicate. It still fascinated her. “I’ve been wondering about something though.,” she said, gazing back at T’Pris. “I suspect there is more to their communication methods, but testing it out might be risky for them and I don’t want to cause them distress. They’ve been through enough.”

T’Pris pondered this for a moment, “I think that as long as its not invasive it should be alright. What if we set up sensors on the habitat itself? Sensors designed to sense brain and electrical activity? Or did you have something else in mind?”

T’Pris Psychobiologist

“We already have readings on the electrical activity. That’s how I know there’s more to my hunch than just whimsy.” Mel exhaled and looked at T’Pris. “I’ve had this thought that their telepathy might be more contact based. I’ve observed them and the neural activity spikes when they touch and we can see the external electrical activity when they light up, so to speak. I believe it’s how they communicate when they aren’t sending empathic signals to each other. And since telepaths and empaths can pick up these empathic signals, I’m wondering if we could also communicate directly with them through touch.” Obviously touching the top of their soft bodies was out of the question, what with the spikes they had, but Reez suspected there were other options.

“Logical, Vulcans are touch telepaths so it may not be out of the realm of possibility for a species such as this. The question is how complex their intelligence is and whether we would understand them.” T’Pris mused.

T’Pris Psychobiologist

Mel shook her head slightly, sending her curls waving to and fro. “There’s no way to know without a direct attempt at communication. Hence my dilemma. I don’t want to cause them harm or distress, and yet, I’m not sure how else to test my hypothesis except to just… try.”

“I think as long as you control the intensity of your psychic output it should do no harm. I can monitor their physiological reactions and let you know if they are in distress.” T’Pris offered.
