It was a quiet evening and the ship was travelling smoothly at Warp 5. They were on Day 2 of their trip from Starbase 157 to Lorillia, where they were to pick up a high profile virologist (one Doctor Siala Modal) who would be working on the ship for several weeks as the Ogawa went to Karantine to develop some advanced pandemic protocols. These were mostly precautionary, but given the recent viral outbreak the crew dealt with on Carraya, Starfleet Medical was concerned about issues on the Romulan side of the border continuing to creep into Federation space unchecked.

The warp core thrummed with energy as the ship moved along smoothly until the ship lurched heavily portside, sending any crew who weren’t holding on to anything, off their feet and out of seats. The lights had flickered and went out briefly until emergency backups kicked in, casting shadows in engineering in the half-light from what was usual. The warp core was now dark, inoperative.

Mark shot up from his chair behind desk. He rushed out into the main compartment. “What the HELL is going on in here? =/\=All Engineers to stations. Repeat, all Engineers to stations.=/\= He rushed to the nearest console. “What happened?… What in Jesus name happened?” he whispered.

While sensors were operational, not all systems on the ship were. The ship had been chucked out of warp drive and now appeared to be inside some sort of subspace pocket. Main power had fluctuated enough to kick the ship to emergency backups, but it did seem that they still had the ability to bring the ship to full power if they wanted to. Maybe.

The subspace region they were in now existed in a state of flux. Furthermore, their high-res sensors which normally extend five lightyears, stopped short, mapping an ovoid shape roughly 2 lightyears long, 1 lightyear wide and 1 lightyear ‘high’. The edges of the this pocket in subspace were thick with subspace distortions, graviton shears and spatial sinkholes, with the Ogawa not too far from an edge. In the middle of the pocket, things seemed calmer, even if everything in this realm was likely unpredictable.

=^= Taylor to Engineering, have we an ETA on power being restored.=^=

=/\=Captain, this… isn’t just a power failure. Based on what I can tell, we’re in some sort of subspace pocket. This thing is huge, constantly in flux, and messing with my engines.=/\= Mark was starting to lose his officer’s composure. He cracked his neck and continued. =/\=We can restore primary power. Still working on a time estimate. But sir, everything is thrown off by this thing. Sensor range was affected… differently in every direction. This is bigger than a blackout.=/\=

=^= Thank you Mister Pierce. If I find someone to yell at i will ensure they are aware of your displeasure of the messing with your engines. Please in the meantime work on the power. We have also lost helm control if you would be so kind.

“Alright. Looks like we’re doing a cold restart of the warp drive. Thompson, check the dilithium crystals. Integrity and alignment. I’ll get started on what shut down our matter/antimatter flow so I can undo it. Everyone else, I imagine there’s something broken everywhere. Find it, fix it. Dismissed.” Mark turned to his console and looked back to see what shut the Ogawa down.

It appeared that the shift into subspace had disrupted the Ogawa’s warp bubble. Given the shifting space around them it also seemed unlikely that they would be able to generate a warp bubble at all.

~Mischief Maker

“Wonderful. Just [expletive] wonderful.” He checked and double checked for any way to get more than emergency backup power.

-Lt(j.g.) Mark Pierce, CE

Mike wasn’t happy himself, he stared at the power map in front of him, muttering to himself. “I’m not seeing an easy way to do this.”

Michael “Mike” Thompson, Engineer

“I don’t care about easy. Can it be done, yes or no?” Mark spun around on his heels. “I do not give a damn if we have to completely disassemble and reassemble this warp core, you got an idea, spit it out.”

-Lt(j.g.) Mark Pierce, CE
