“Oh, we found him. And the 37 other men, women, and third-genders of five other species he’d infected in the three weeks since he’d acquired the parasite himself. Because God knows it’s too hard to spend five seconds to put on a damn condom,” Brad said.

Willow chuckled quietly,

“How about you? What’s the Owie been up to since you took command?”

Lt. Cmdr. Dr. Brad Walker
Chief of Staff

“To be honest, it’s been mad! We were at a conference and ended up being held hostage and having to preform an emergency surgical procedure in let’s say less than stellar conditions. We took the hostage takers and offered sanctuary after it turned out their government were doing some freaked out Xmen style genetic manipulation, and I got chewed out by fleet command for it.”

“And then they send you a guy convicted of doing essentially the same thing. Gotta love fleet command,” Brad said.

Willow took a mouthful of beer. “Then we have a mix up with cargo that results in a family of Gastropods being accidentally transported aboard getting separated and eating half our energy to keep themselves living. We still have them…”another drink. “…they are in the environmental controlled area of the ship.”

“Planning on making a field trip to send them where they’re supposed to be once we’re done here?”

With a slight head tilt she considered. “And did I mention the fact that we have an egomaniac surgeon in sickbay, a skeleton running the dental suites…and a convicted criminal? Oh…and there was a mad man running around with a mop apparently attacking people…Rico and Scott dealt with that if the reports are to be believed. So normal ship stuff.”

“Seems like Mopman can also give the psych department something to do. I know they get bored sometimes, since most of us are Pinnacles of Mental Stability,” Brad teased. “Apart from Dr. Marshall, honestly I think he thinks he’s in an old-fashioned soap opera sometimes.”

Willow Laughed. “Do you remember…that weird old administrator guy at star-fleet who has the lemur on his shoulder. I thought he was literally the weirdest thing I’d ever see..boy was I wrong!”

“You’re talking to a guy who had to tell a Bolian ambassador that he couldn’t bring a 10- meter long venomous snake into a sterile room to visit an aid, even though it was his ‘emotional support herpeform’,” Brad said.

“And why not. Snakes are amazingly coothy.” She laughed.

“Yes, but not sterile. And we don’t stock PPE that fit snakes. Humanoid reptiles, sure. But honest-to-God, non-sentient snakes? No. So no admittance to ICU.”

“I’ll make sure to send some to your office just in case.” She said her eyes twinkling mischievously.

The pounding noise from Cai’s room lowered and the door opened admitting the purple hoodied teen into the main room. He slouched in and went to the replicator ignoring them both.

“Oh, hey Cai,” Brad said. “Want a slice?”

Lt. Cmdr. Dr. Brad Walker
Chief of Staff

Cai raised his eyebrows and looked over. “No thanks…I’ve got my own.” He said but not with the kind of teenage contempt he normally reserved for his sister. He did indeed replicate a pizza of his own. It appeared to be covered in chillies and jalapeños.

“Looks like a recipe for capsaicin overdose to me, but what do I know, I’m just a middle-aged white guy from Omaha,” Brad said. “You do you, man.”

The teen did in fact sit down opposite them “ Yeah well I’m more interested in the endorphins and dopamine that the burning pain will also release. Also there’s the taste. But if i develop blisters in my throat, vomit or go into anaphylactic shock i’m With the best company right?’ He asked and taking half of his pizza folded it in on itself and took a huge bite. His cheeks, normally an almost alabaster pale turned red seconds after he started to chew. “Pure euphoria” he mumbled through the mass of dough and cheese and fire in his mouth.

Willow shook her head and took another slice of her own.

“I’d say don’t talk with your mouth full, but that’s far down the ‘bad decisions’ list here,” Brad said. The teen’s words had set off alarm bells in his head. There were far healthier ways to get the brain to release either of those hormones.
