Vell’khor and Chief Healer K’rynn exchanged a look before the Keeper replied to Sinclair. “We started our pilgrimage with 352 people. We have lost five so far. But many more will soon reach the advanced phase. If we were back on Aylia, we consecrate our dead and reduce the body to ash, before returning it to the ground or the stars. But here, now, we have no such option,” she said, the calm on her face disappearing, overtaken by a deep sorrow. She went to say more but words died on her lips.
Zylithar reached out and rested a hand on Nyrasa’s arm before he continued for her. “When someone with The Nightfall Plague dies, there is completely cellular decay. There is very little left,” he said softly. “Walk with us. We will show you what we are dealing with.”
“Lead the way.” Sinclair said softly l.
Both Dalton and Elbbirt’s tricorders were recording a great deal of data. For one, the ship itself seemed to be have many organic components that were intricately integrated, not unlike a person’s physiology. Dalton would note the presence of regenerative tech throughout the ship’s systems.
There were viral particles present in the air, though in a low quantity in this bay. Elbiirt would note that both Vell’khor and K’rynn seem to have a small concentration of the virus, suggesting they were both infected.
And then they stepped out of the bay into a small corridor. The ship design was bright and warm, inviting. They kept walking across the corridor and through a door.
They found themselves in some sort of round atrium with a large central tree. The tree boughs arced gracefully over the area and would have amped up the serene feel if it weren’t for the fact that the tree’s ovoid dark green leaves were turning black. Around the tree, dozens of blue beings on cots were being attended to by others. The only voices were those of the attendants. The patients were eerily quiet, only the occasional murmur.
The Keeper turned and faced the away team. “These are the patents in Stage 2, the progression phase. Those in Stage 1 are keeping to their pods, but at this point, the pathogen in is in our air and we could not scrub it fast enough. At this point it is assumed everyone is infected, though the latest ones have been in the last day. When they begin to hit Stage 2, there will be no one left to keep this ship going.” They were not Human, these people, but the Keeper was a leader for this people, the one in charge. As helpless as the situation seemed to be, she seemed to pull herself together, if nothing else than to present a solid presence for the bodies laying before them, and those valiantly trying to end to them.

OOC: Calder has been there all along nothing to see here, move along so says Linds ;)Calder stood guard though at this point a weapon was unnecessary. He looked at the sick individuals he so desperately wanted to help them, but he was a paramedic not a biologist. “Maybe our engineer’s could rig up some additional filtration to slow down the spread” he said thinking out loud to no one really. He had a bad habit of doing that, and it got him in a fair amount of trouble.
Aaron Calder
USS Ogawa SecurityElbbirt heard Calder and nodded. “If we can get the biomedical labs to identify it, we might be able to program a filter to pull it out. Or even dispurse an antogen into the air system. It’s everywhere. Keep your masks on.”
Lt. Cmdr. Kane, AMO
“If everyone is already infected, we should prioritize efforts to slowing the progression first.” Sinclair said. “But the idea of dispersing a potential cure via the life support is solid. It may help the actual ship as well.”
That brought an observation to Cori’s mind. “May I ask about your ships structure? I’ve noted many organic components. Our ship uses some as well, but this seems far more extensive. How do you stop the ship itself from being affected by pathogens?” Dalton asked.
~Corinne Dalton
The Keeper tilted her head slightly as she gazed at the scientist. “When systems are working optimally, it’s not unlike a person. There is a circulatory system that we can inoculate, but that can have its limits. So far, the ship seems to be stable, but there are reports in the past of the Plague slowly breaking downs ships, but one could argue that was more a result of their crews not being functional enough to monitor and fix the systems.”
~Mischief Maker
She followed along, noting the condition of all that were assembled as well as the condition of the tree. It would be something their Chief of Security would be interested in no doubt, as she was a sort of amateur gardener and botanist. She made note to send some images to the Chief and turned to the Keeper and Healer. “What are the symptoms of the individual stages?”
NE Cordelle
K’rynn drew in a deep breath. “It begins very simply. Fatigue, progressive numbness in the extremities, pale and waxy skin, and auditory hallucinations and growing loss of light perception. Then is progresses to to severe confusion and disorientation, dark spots on the skin, gradual paralysis, difficulty speaking, and darkened eyes that cease to function. Finally, in the last stage, it results in full paralysis, organ failure as the cells begin to disintegrate, hallucinations, and complete inability to move or communicate, even though the mind is still at least partly there. This last a little longer before the body is consumed by the disease and there is complete cellular breakdown.” He swallowed. “We turn into mist, no more than dust on the floor.” He barely made eye contact, his jaw tense as if he was remembering.”
“Keeper,” Elbbirt spoke up, “would it be possible to obtain blood samples from patients at each of the stages? Our medical labs are quite advanced, and we could begin working on analysis while we work here.”
Lt. Cmdr. Kane, AMO
Sinclair nodded in agreement and then added “And any samples of what remains after the virus has run its course may help as well.” A thought then occurred to him. He looked at Kane and said “If the virus causes cellular decay but doesn’t decay itself, we should find out how that works. Maybe we can use it’s own structure against it. Modified DNA based on its own make up? Give it a kind of cancer that only effects the virus?”
Cmdr. Royal Sinclair, XO
“If anyone can figure that out,” Elbbirt said, “it will be the Cmdrs Kane.”
“We can get you samples, yes,” Nyrasa said. The Keeper stepped closer and held out her arm. “You can take a sample from myself. I have been infected for two days now. Stage one. We can give you a sample from someone here for Stage Two. Stage Three patients are elsewhere. I will have someone send your ship the info we have thus far.”
Elbbirt stepped forward, “This is a hypopray. We use them for admission listening medications and taking samples. It is painless for us.” He didn’t know enough about their physiology to be sure it would be for them as well. He took a vial out of his kit and slipped it into the hypo. He placed the hypo against Nyrssa’s arm and quickly obtained the sample. He scanned the vial with his tricorder, making quick notes and a quick scan of Nyrssa and put the sample away. “Thank you Keeper. The more samples we can obtain the faster our lab can work towards a treatment.”
OOC: My thought is that you take samples and someone(s) returns to the ship in the runabout (possiblly with patients. The second runabout can come over and thus we can start ferrying people and give the labs and triage deck something to do.
~Mischief Maker
Clader was mostly silent, there was nothing left for him to add, so he focused on maintaining security, so far things were ok, but desperate people could turn on you quickly.
Aaron Calder
USS Ogawa SecurityElbbirt turned to Calder, “Lt. could you help me get an air sample. If the virus is airborne, we could capture a live sample for the lab as well.”
Lt. Elbbirt, med
Calder smiled, “Ofcourse doctor, let me know you need from me,” he noted.
~~~CalderOOC: Not sure where my reply went....
IC:
Elbbirt gave a grateful nod. He pulled a device out of his kit and handed it to Calder. “Just walk around the area with this. When the light turns red, press this blue button on the left. Once the light turns green it’s safe for transport.”Sinclair looked at Calder. “Lieutenant, start prepping the ship for transport of patients and coordinate Security in the hangar bay. Make sure we are keeping Ogawa personnel on full isolation protocols. Under no circumstances are any infected allowed to leave the hangar. And make sure life support in the bay is isolated from the rest of the ship.”
Cmdr. Royal Sinclair, XO
Elbbirt nodded, “Commander, uh, Dr. Kane… Alexis Kane, she already has deck 14 set up for triage. Do you want me to tell her to switch to deck 9 to the shuttle bay?” He did not relish having to tell her that. He would much rather the commander do it so he didn’t have to deal with arguing with her over it, espcially when her argument would be… logical and correct, and he was just the messenger.
Elbbirt, med
“Yes.” Sinclair said flatly. “Until we know how this virus works and how it spreads, we are not moving infected patients through the ship. They go to the hangar, no where else.” He looked at Elbbirt and gave them a slight grin. “Tell her it’s my order. She can yell at me later.”
Cmdr. Royal Sinclair, XO
Elbbirt nodded, “Aye Sir.” He turned away and swallowed before tapping his combadge. =/\=Elbert to Alexis Kane. Doctor, Cmdr Sinclair has ordered triage to be conducted in the shuttlebay and all patients held there.=/\= There was a half beat pause, =/\=Aknowledged.=/\=
=/\=Kane to Cmdr Sinclair. Sir I understand the need for caution but the shuttle bay is not going to give you the caution you want. It is not prepared for medical triage, and it does not have stand alone environmental systems. Triage deck does. Instead of using the transporters to move them, deck 14 does have it’s own bay doors. We can clear an area for one shuttle at a time to land.=/\=
Lt. Cmdr. Kane, AMO
Sinclair’s jaw clenched slightly and he turned away from the rest of the away team. =/\= Commander Kane, are you aware of the dimensions of the bay doors in that area? I’m not sure when you last piloted one of our auxillary spacecraft, but I would venture to say that having to roll the ship at least forty-five degrees to attempt to fit it through the bay doors on deck fourteen and then have to roll it back to land while already inside the ship is an added risk to an already risky-heavy endeavour. But as the Assistant Chief Medical Officer, I will defer to your medical and piloting expertise. You let me know, Commander. =/\= He turned back to the away team and the ship’s contingent and said “My apologies. Logistics issues. And we want to make sure we keep your people as comfortable as possible.”
Cmdr. Royal Sinclair, XO
Calder listened to the conversation, it was interesting he had seen the triage deck and it’s bays, seems like you could get a shuttle in there easy enough. “Sir, if your pilots are not up to the task, I can do it” he said, his confidence unyielding, he had maneuvered shuttles and runabouts into some really tight spaces for rescue missions so how hard could be.
Aaron Calder
USS Ogawa SecurityOOC: There is some RL confusion as to how big the doors actally are. Spec seems a bit off.
OOC: So I sucked up the nerve and asked the designers. Deck 14 does have outside access doors, but they are not big enough for a shuttle…so .... a have a plan! Buahahaha. And we’ll see what the evil GM says. LOL
IC: Sinclair looked at the Security officer and said sternly but quietly “Now is not the time nor the place to demean the abilities of your shipmates, Lieutenant Junior Grade. Now if I am not mistaken, I believe you have your orders, do you not? Or did you find them unclear?”
Cmdr. Royal Sinclair, XO
“SIR!” he said snapping to attention, “CLEAR SIR, NO DISRESPECT INTENDED SIR” he said waiting to be dismissed. It was a cheap shot he knew it, and frankly meant it, the ship was....squishy compared to where he had been. you should stop pressing buttons calder before you get demoted back down to ensign
Aaron Calder
USS Ogawa SecuritySinclair chuckled slightly and said ” This isn’t the Marines, Lieutenant. Focus on the job at hand and leave the organizational bluster for later. Carry on.” and he turned back the Healer.
After copying the information the Chief Helaer had given about the stages, Cori had slipped away from the very active discussion and moved to collect samples from the people in the space they were in. With permission of course. But these people seemed grateful for the help and let her take what she needed. She carefully marked the sample with an ID number and keyed it to a PADD with notations on the sex and age of the patient, and how many days they were into the illness (male, 26, 6). All she knew from these people so far that those in this room were Stage 2. If the Keeper was Stage 1, they just needed samples from Stage 3 to compare to.
She approached the healer. “Sir, would I be able to get a sample of a Stage 3 patient?”
“Of course,” Zylithar said. He turned and gestured to one of the healers tending to the Stage 2 patients. “Please show our helper to the infirmary.” The woman gave a bow and nod of her head.
Cori turned to Sinclair, hoping she wasn’t interrupting. “Commander, with your permission. I won’t be long, then we can get the samples back to the ship.”
~Mischief Maker
“Slow and methodical, Lieutenant. Under no circumstances are you to risk exposure. Understood?” Sinclair replied.
Cmdr. Royal Sinclair, XO
Elbbirt looked at Cori as she left. “I’ll need to collect samples as well, Healer, but before we start transporting patients if I may?”
He tilted his head and gave a nod. “By all means.”
“If stage 3 patients are unable to communicate and are in such physical and emotional distress, I am hesitant to move them to our ship. A strange ship, strange aliens, could distress them unnecessarily during this time. I would greatly appreciate your input on which patients to transport and how best to make them comfortable with the transfer,” Elbbirt said.
Elbbirt, med
Dalton nodded to the XO and moved off with the other healer.
OOC: I’ll start another thread so we can keep locations clear.
~Corinne Dalton
Zylithar wiggled his fingers as he looked across the atrium as the Stage 2 patients. When he gazed back at Elbbirt, there was sadness in his eyes. “Yes, you are probably correct. Sadly. Stage 2 patients are the ones who need the most attention, and anyone who is Stage 1 is functional, but it depends on how many days since infection. Stage 1 and 2 are the ones I would suggest taking to your ship, with the priority being Stage 2. Would you agree?” he said, turning to confer with Nyrasa.
She nodded. “Yes, that seems most prudent. Let’s start with Stage 2, which includes these people here, and then-” Her sentence was cut off by commotion further in the atrium. One of the female patients was trying to get out of bed, frantically waving off any of the healers who tried to approach. They were trying to speak but were having a difficult time getting out anything coherent.
“Issa,” Nyrasa said and hurried over, lifting the long skirt of her dress as she all but ran. The two healers trying to calm the patient gave way for the Keeper. She grabbed one of the flailing hands and spoke soothing words, coming to rest on her knees at the cot. The patient still seemed disoriented but stopped flailing long enough for one of the healers to approach from behind and inject something.
K’rynn sighed. “One of her friends who won a spot on the pilgrimmage. At this point, we tend to have to administer some level of anxiolytic or sedation to stop patients from harming themselves or others.”
A moment later, the patient seemed to waver and Vell’khor gently coaxed them back into bed.
~Mischief Maker
Elbbirt nodded, “I think that would be best. We will fit them with isolated breathing masks. Would there would be anyone of your medical staff that could go with us? A familiar face to reassure them?”
Lt Elbbirt, med
The Chief Healer nodded. “Yes, most definitely. I’ll have Healer Irhallas go with you.”
~Mischief Maker
“We will get them fitted with rebreathers and then begin loading them into the shuttles. What can you tell us about how the virus is spread Healer?” Elbbirt asked.
Lt. Cmdr. Kane, AMO
Calder had spent the past half hour prepping the shuttle and working with security to have them on standby for where ever they decided to drop the sick. He stood out side the hatch waiting.
=/\=Huzzen to Calder=/\= his comm chirped as he prepped the shuttle.
=/\=We’re modifying the outer doors of the triage deck as a jury-rigged airlock. You’ll have to bring the shuttle through the Ogawa’s shields and modulate the shuttle’s to the same frequency.=/\=
