Soft footfalls proceeded a chime at the Captain’s door. Sadie tugged at her uniform, mildly annoyed that the Ogawa’s uniform sat slightly differently on her body than her old uniform on the Ferrite. How could two uniforms built from the same pattern sit differently? She tugged at the cloth again, trying not to be too distracted by it. Instead, she focused intensely on the door in front of her, waiting for the captain’s response.

Dira was sitting at her desk, focused intently on the report that she was honestly tired of reading. So intent was said focus that she startled at the sound of the chime. “Enter,” Myqian said, looking up from her computer towards the door.

The spacious room had been slowly evolving after Myqian found her place as captain. To the right of the entrance was the captain’s desk, a couple chairs for guests, and a replicator tucked into the corner, while a sitting area took up the space in front of the an expanse of windows opposite the main door. The sitting area comprised of a navy blue sofa that had a gentle curve to it, with a soft knit blanket in cream draped over the far end. On each side of the sofa, nestled between the windows and where it curved out was a side table with a potted plant. One had trails of forked leaves and the other had tall dark green stems lined with alternating heart shaped leaves that had a blue hue.

Other small touches had been added that were Dira’s. Aside from the plants and blanket, there was a round and squat pot in a deep blue colour with sweeps of white and green paint. It sat on the shelf behind the desk, along with a picture of an older brown skinned woman with a heart shape face, natural black kinky curls not unlike Dira’s, and the dark eyes of a Betazoid. On the other side of the pot was a brown skinned Haliian man with a greying moustache, short dark hair and a receding hairline that made his forehead ridges and bulges more prominent.

Sadie made her way into the ready room and saluted, standing at attention. “Lt. Cmdr Sadie, reporting for duty, Captain.” She subtly took in the various accents in the room, noting the presence of plants, the prominent photographs, and the comfortable looking seating arrangements. The prominent view of stars that always gave her the same childlike wonder she’d felt the first time she got to visit space.

Dira smiled. “Welcome abord, Commander. We’re glad to have you. At ease, please.”

Once she was given leave to be at ease, Sadie took a seat on one of the regular chairs and gave the captain a warm smile, then tugged uselessly at the front of her uniform to adjust it. “Thank you for approving my transfer, Captain.”

She would have suggested they sit on the sofa for the kind of chat she usually liked to have during a first meeting with a new department head, but that level of informality could be unsettling for some right away, so she was happy to start the conversation at her desk. She leaned back in her chair and rested one arm on the desk. “Well, I was in need of a Chief Science Officer, and you were a strong candidate. But an assignment on a medical ship like this isn’t going to be like other assignments in the fleet. Do you have any concerns about that transition? My goal, as will Commander Sinclair’s is to make sure you get what you need as you settle into life on the Ogawa.”

Sadie nodded. “It is my understanding that a great deal, if not the entirety of our missions will be medicine related. My specialties don’t lie in the organic field, rather in physics, so I expect my responsibility will lie more in my skills as a delegator in assigning the correct junior officers to each task we come across.”

Dira bobbed her head back and forth. It wasn’t a yes, but it wasn’t a no, either. “So, yes, our missions are mostly health related. That could be medical related, like epidemics, setting up field hospitals, providing support to other projects, or serving as a medical support in specific fleet movements. But sometimes we will deal with more mental health issues.”

She tapped her fingers in succession on the desktop. “The reality is that we find ourselves regularly in unusual situations. We may in fact need your expertise more often than you might think, so keep up on your projects and learnings, and be prepared for anything.”

Sadie nodded in understanding of the explanation. “That is logical.”

Dira shifted her position, leaning forward on the edge of her desk. She took the arm on the desk and turned her arm upwards to brace her chin on her hand. “So, tell me about science. What is it you love? Anything that frustrates you? Things you’re looking forward to exploring? Things like that.”

Sadie considered the question. “I love science because it is always surprising me. Physics always seems like a solved field, but then we discover something new about the galaxy that throws everything into chaos for a moment before it is inevitably understood or accepted to be non-understandable. I also deeply enjoy learning languages, for the same reason. Learning the history behind the evolution of languages, how they change and grow over time. Languages evolve, almost like living beings. It’s fascinating. Frustrations… Working with other scientists, sometimes. Especially those who are older and set in their ways. Not accepting a new theory just because it clashes with their pre-formed ideas about the galaxy. Finding out that a particuar piece of knowledge was discovered already by some society, only to have been suppressed for not fitting in with the established ideas… Honestly mostly just other people being jerks. Science itself, as a pure thing, doesn’t really frustrate me. I enjoy the twists and turns, and I find comfort in that which remains steady and boring.”
