She was lit up with genuine enthusiasm and Sam as he all but stared at her, a soft smile on his face. There were thoughts that moved through his mind but it was like he had forgotten he wasn’t saying them aloud.

Navale paused after minutes of rambling on, being interupted by the arrival of the rest of their food. Her cheeks flushed in embarrassment, even as she grinned. “Sorry. I didn’t mean to dominate the conversation.”
Lt. Huzzen, Engineer
He shook his head. “Don’t be. I was just admiring how passionate you were. It’s a good thing in my mind. I think everyone should have topics they are genuinely enthusiastic about and happily share them with others. I like that I’ve found one of yours.”

Navale laughed, “I like seeing new things. The stranger the better. The stranger the more beautiful, I think. It’s very different from where I grew up.” She paused to try several different bites of the food they had ordered. Her face was expressive. It was easy to tell what she liked and what she did not.

Enjoying the idea of sharing small plates with Navale, Sam tried one of the dumplings. Biting into the tender wrapper, the inside was juicy with well seasoned meat and the imo leaf offered an interesting bright note that was hard to place. He pointed to the dumplins. “These are quite good.”
“Are there parts of your childhood home or life there that you wish you had more of out here exploring the galaxy with Starfleet?”
~Sam, Host of Florence’s
Navale took one of the dumplings and bit into it. The flavor raced over her tongue. “Mmmmm hmmmhmmmm.” She took a sip of her drink. “Good.” She tipped her head to the side, “The community. We have it here, but it’s more broad, more global. Not as close knit.”
Lt. Huzzen, Engineer
He nodded. “It can be hard. People can come and go so quickly it seems and that can make it hard for everyone to feel connected. It’s definitely different. Do you think there are ways we could do more to create that community feeling you long for on the Ogawa?” Sam leaned in. “I ask for purely professional reasons, knowing there are definitely personal aspects,” he said with a grin.
~Sam, Host of Florence’s
Navale shrugged, “Honestly, I don’t know. I mean I worked in one place for a long time before coming to the Ogawa. Our team stayed the same, the crew didn’t change much. But it was still that feeling of global community rather than neighbors.”
Lt. Huzzen, Engineer
He nodded slowly. “I know what you mean. I’ve always felt it when I visited Betazed to spend time with my mother. There’s just a tangible sort of feeling to certain places that is either there or not. You can take steps to create it, but it’s often not the same.” His expression shifted. It wasn’t sad exactly, but more pensive. “The exception is when circumstances force everyone to bond in unexpected ways. The War was like that a lot, both in my own experience, but also others I’ve spoken with that also served during that time.”
~Sam, Host of Florence’s
Navale nodded. “I guess that was sort of it at home. We were all struggling just to make ends meet, to put food, any food, on the table for the little ones. We all took care of each other. We had to, or we didn’t make it. It creates a strong community, but its sad that those circumstances happen.”
Lt. Huzzen, Engineer
He nodded slowly. “I agree, though on the other side of it, I think it can give you a different sort of compassion for others. Maybe it’s not the same, but perhaps people don’t know what they are missing until they are shown it can be different. Maybe those of us who see how a community can form can find small ways to infuse little bits even in a situation like we have on the Ogawa.” He popped a new bite of the one of the small dishes they had ordered and allowed the flavours to burst over his tongue.
