“Open the channel,” Dira said, riding to her feet. Though there was no visual, it helped her convey the right tone by assuming a more formal posture.

The Ensign nodded and did as ordered. The computer beeped at the command.

=/\=This is Captain Dira Myqian of the Federation starship Ogawa. We’re a medical vessel responding to a distress call we detected from this nebula. Can offer asisstance?=/\=

Captain Myqian, CO

A static reply came through, it was broken at points but the reply could be easily understood. =^= A medical ship? Praise be!=^= The relief was palpable in the female voice that answered.
=^= I’m Keeper Nyrasa Vell’khor. We have a medical emergency I’m afraid and we require....urge........ assistance. Our Elder healer is doing everything he can but...... reached.... limit of our medical capability. =^= Nyrasa added.

GM Budgie

The audio quality was just good enough for Dira to get the gist, but they still needed more details. A whole lot more details. =/\=Keeper, we are en route, but navigating the nebula will take a little longer. Can you specify medical emergency you are dealing with? And if you can tell us what world you hail from so that we can best prepare for different physiologies, that would be very helpful.=/\= Some captains might not bothering to ask till they got there, but here on the Ogawa it was a key detail they needed for their preparations

Captain Myqian, CO

=^= Thank you Captain we really do......preciate it. We’ve..... come.....dow.....with a plague. We come… Aylia. =^= The voice replied.

As the Captain spoke with the other ship, Royal began running a search for the Keeper’s name and the title through the computer.

Cmdr. Royal Sinclair, XO

Royal’s search of the computer system came up with nothing. There was no mention of the Keeper’s name anywhere in Starfleet records.

GM Budgie

A plague. Great. Well, not only where they well trained for this scenario, but over the years this crew had gotten a fair bit of experience with epidemics. =/\=The nebula is causing some interference,=/\= Dira said, knowing the same could be equally true on the other end. =/\=Can you repeat your world’s name? And how many people are on your vessel?=/\=

Captain Myqian, CO

=^=…Planet is Aylia......We.....crew of 340.=^= Came the reply.

GM Budgie (and no longer awol due to forgetting to change character....)

=/\=Understood, Keeper, we are en route as quickly as possible. Ogawa out.=/\=

Dira turned to Brad and Royal. “Alright, full epidemic protocols. We have an unknown contagious illness on a vessel and we need the triage deck ready in case we need to move people to safe a place.” Myqian activated the internal comm. =/\=Bridge to Engineering. We have a medical emergency we are responding to and will need to enter the nebula. Things will get bumpy and we will need to reinforce external shields but also prepare for biohazard isolation.=/\=

Captain Myqian, CO

“I’d suggest starting things on the triage deck,” Brad said. “If they’ve got a plague on a ship of 340, the most prudent thing to do would be to use the deck for its purpose, bring them all over here and move the worst cases to our more specialized facilities as needed. If by some miracle they have some that aren’t infected, especially among their medical staff, they can help us treat those that are.”

Even as he spoke, he was tapping out orders to prep the triage deck for receptions.

=^=Bridge, we are seeing system fluctuations and malfunctions across the ship, I’m going to take a wild guess that either something in this nebula is the cause of that. I’m not sure how long we’ll be able to guarantee shields at this point.=^=

Lt Sutret - CE

Upon hearing the Captain’s order for medical protocols an helpful Ensign pressed a button taking the ship into medical alert.

GM Budgie

=/\=Can we pull power from non-essential areas and still maintain triage and biohazard protocols?=/\= Myqian asked, frustration starting to build but not that she let it show.

Captain Myqian, CO

=^= Already on it. It might not be pretty, but we’ll try to keep the lights on.=^=

Lt Sutret - CE

=/\= Alright, keep me posted. We’re going in. Bridge out.=/\=

“Helm, take us in, full impulse,” Dira said, resuming her seat and bracing her arms on the arms of the chair, ready for the likely bumpy ride.

Captain Myqian, CO

NE Definitely Did Do it nodded.
“Aye Ma’am, full impulse.” He tapped the console. The ship didn’t move.
“Uhhh, Captain the impulse engines aren’t responding.” Definitely Did Do It, stated tapping the console continuously trying to get the ship to move.

GM Budgie

“Stand by,” she said.

Dira took a steadying breath. =/\=Bridge to Engineering. My ship isn’t moving as expected. What’s happening with impulse?=/\=

=^=Standby.=^=

Captain Myqian, CO

Cmdr. Dr. Brad Walker
Chief of Staff

=^=Engineering to Bridge. Try them now, we are working on a more permanent fix.=^=

Lt Sutret - CE

=/\=Standby, Engineering, though I daresay you’ll know it’s working as soon as we do.=/\=

“Helm, reengage engines, full impulse,” Myqian commanded.

Captain Myqian, CO

The Helmsman nodded and tapped the commands on the console.
“Aye, Captain. Impulse engaged.” He stated and the ship moved forward into the nebula. He held his breath for a moment but then relaxed when the ship moved.

They were in the nebula for approximately 10 mins and the Science station began to beep.

GM Budgie

“Oh good, I love a beep,” Brad murmured.

Lt. Commander Dev Siobhan quietly stepped onto the bridge and took her station at Science 1. She tapped the console, answering the alert at her station.

Lt. Commander Dev ○●●
Chief Science Officer
U.S.S. Ogawa

Answering the alert brought up some background results, a very small, very brief anomaly had been detected. As soon as it began, it was over.

“Commander, I briefly detected a small anomaly, but it has already dissipated. Localized but irregular.” She paused, parsing the filtered readouts.

“Cause unknown, but I’m not reading any residual ionization or gravimetric distortion. It could have been a subspace eddy, but there is no way to be certain.”

The XO turned and looked her. “Commander, as soon as you can get a clear result, scan everything you can on that ship. We need to know what we are dealing with before we send anyone over there.”

Cmdr. Royal Sinclair, XO

“Aye, Sir,” Commander Dev replied, at the same time initiating scans.

Lt. Commander Dev ○●●
Chief Science Officer
U.S.S. Ogawa

Cmdr. Dr. Brad Walker
Chief of Staff

The Ogawa moved closer and closer to the unknown ship- after a few minutes it was well within scanning range.

A scan of the plague ship would confirm that 349 people were aboard- this number dropped by two while Dev read the results. It was a medium-to large vessel with very limited combat capabilities. It was more of a transport ship rather than a combat cruiser. The ship was like nothing Dev had ever seen before. It was a technological marvel. It seemed like the ship was partially “alive” combing organic material throughout. Another important note, the scans showed that the ship had multi phasic shielding and seemed completely unaffected by the nebula.

GM Budgie

“Commander, we have 349 life signs aboard the vessel—”

She stopped. Blinked once.

“…Correction. 347.”

Brad winced.

There was a beat of silence. Then she continued, her tone tightening.

“It’s a transport-class ship. Lightly armored, no significant weapons array. But… the hull is interlaced with organic structures—symbiotic, maybe even partially sentient. I’ve never seen anything like it. It’s not just advanced—it’s different. Built on principles we haven’t fully mapped.”

Brad’s ears perked up at that nugget.

She adjusted the field, eyes narrowing.

“Multiphasic shielding. It’s holding steady in the nebula—completely unaffected by the interference. They’re operating in an environment that would disrupt one of our own vessels, and doing so effortlessly.”

Her jaw tightened, just slightly.

“This wasn’t built for war, but it wasn’t built by amateurs either. And those lost life signs…” She glanced toward the XO. “If this plague is as advanced as the ship, we’re going to need more than standard protocols.”

She tapped the console again, initiating a deeper analysis.

“I’ll keep digging.”

Lt. Commander Dev ○●●
Chief Science Officer
U.S.S. Ogawa

“I want to know if the virus or whatever it is is impacting the organic parts of the ship,” Brad chimed in. That could be a possible vector to find a treatment.

He also tapped his commbadge. =/\=Walker to triage deck. Current patient count is 347.=/\=
