The truth was Navale wasn’t really looking for the flower. If they found it, that was a bonus. She was having too much fun with Sam to worry about the flower. Though she was trying to do her best to appear to be searching. She had bent down to look between two bushes and glanced over her shoulder at him. “Well since you answered already I can’t ask. But I certainly didn’t expect it either.” She stood and turned to look at him. “For the record, I’ll be really disappointed if we don’t do this again.”
Lt. Huzzen, Engineer
“Oh, good, we’re in agreement. But I warn you, not every date will be this planned and over the top. Gotta keep the magic, after all.” He eyed her and broke into a lopsided grin. “And does this mean the next one is yours to plan?”
~Sam, Host of Florence’s
“Oh good. I wouldn’t want everything to be over the top. Otherwise, you miss the magic that’s around you every day.” She winked at him, and then after a moment she nodded. “Sure, I can plan it, but you have to understand, my culinary expertise ends with reheated left overs and the replicator.”
Lt. Huzzen, Engineer
He smiled at her. “Cooking is never required, neither is food. I’ll just be happy spending time with you,” he said.
Navale grinned, “While this is true, having food on hand means I can spend more time with you.” She moved further into the thicker parts of the garden. She wasn’t sure they would find the flower there, but at this point it was just about spending time with him.
“You know, if we don’t find these flowers tonight, it might just mean we’ll have to come back and try another time.” It was a nice thought, actually.
~Sam, Host of Florence’s
“Sam,” she said shocked. “I don’t know,” she turned and looked at him, hand on her hip, the other, fingers tapping her lower lip. “This might not work. We’ve only been out here … what 20 minutes, and you’re ready to give up?” Navale shook her head in mock disappointment. “Or we could make it a tradition to find it instead.”
Lt. Huzzen, Engineer
His eyes crinkled at the corners. “Oh, I’m not giving up. I was just thinking that this is definitely one of those times where the journey is more enjoyable than the outcome. Whether the flowers decide to reveal themselves to us tonight or no, it will have been worth the venture.” Sam held out his hand to her. “But I come from families full of traditions, so I’m never opposed to adding some more in my life.”
~Sam, Host of Florence’s
Her hand slipped into his, allowing the magnetic attraction between them to draw her closer. “Mmm, good. Of course tradition isn’t always about the end point. It can be about the journey too. Sometimes, it’s about letting yourself get lost, and suddenly finding you were right where you were supposed to be.”
Lt. Huzzen, Engineer
“That’s been my experience these last years,” Sam said softly, pulling her to him, mindful of the bag still slung over one shoulder. “Though I am damn glad I said yes to the Ogawa. I figured if there was anywhere that needed a good bartender, it was a ship full of medical staff,” he said with a grin. “Though I am glad I arrived just after that whole Alice-in-Wonderland episode. I heard it was quite the trip.” As much as he was always up for unusual experiences, having a mass hallucination from a fungus was pushing things a tad far.
~Sam, Host of Florence’s
Navale shuddered. “I heard stories. Did you know someone kept it as a pet? It got loose in the Jefferies Tube’s a few months ago. I had to go in after it.” It had been an… unsettling experience.
Lt. Huzzen, Engineer
His eyes widened. “you’re kidding?” Sam held up a finger. “Actually I take that back. A ship full of scientists of various fields? Of course someone kept it as a pet.” Same shook his head. “Well, it’s always an adventure on our ship, though I am glad it gets spaced out a bit. And I’m very glad for tose that keep the ship running,” He grinned at her. “Especially since it helps me keep being creative with food.”
~Sam, Host of Florence’s
Navale laughed and shook her head. “Oh yes, your replicators are top priority over everything. It just amazing we don’t get any requests for maintenance though. I wonder why that is?”
Lt. Huzzen, Engineer
An innocent expression swept across his face. “I don’t know what you’re talking about? The replicators in the Lounge work just wonderfully. But if I should need a repair, am I allowed to put in a personal work request? Or would that be frowned upon?” In reality, most tiny issues he could fix faster than someone could get down there whenever the request filtered through the queue. But if it meant he’d see Navale more, well, he could work around the wait.
~Sam, Host of Florence’s
Navale grinned even while her brows went up at his claim of ignorance. “Of course you can. It’s kind of like going to sickbay. You prefer certain doctors, so you can schedule time to be seen by them. Think of us as machine doctors.”
Lt. Huzzen, Engineer
“Excellent!” Sam said, grinning. “Though it does presume that the preferred engineer not only is free but actually wants to take care of such mundane tasks. I mean, it is a replicator. Not exactly exciting work.” His eyes were still gleaming. Ahh, this was such fun!
