Dira turned to their second officer. “Distress call coming from within a nebula that is marked as one to avoid,” she said, arching her brows. “The call wasn’t clear. It sounded like there might be a medical emergency, but we’re waiting to see if we can clear up the signal. Either way, standard rescue protocols. Prepare for anything and everything.” They knew the drill. “We’re five light years out and on our way in a hurry. You have a bit of time to prep.”
“Oh good,” Brad said in response. “No time like a plague for First Contact. We’ll have to put an extra emphasis on biosecurity protocols as well.”
She turned her head to Royal. “Give Engineering a heads up. We’re likely going to give our shield and navigation systems a workout today.” Good thing they were all fixed up and everything, but Dira was really hoping they weren’t going to take a beating their next foray out.
Captain Myqian, CO
Royal nodded and tapped the comms on the arm of his chair. =/\= Bridge to Engineering. We are headed towards a hazardous nebula with significant ion discharge and electrical activity. Make sure the shields and deflector arrays are prepped and ready to handle the increase in activity. =/\=
Cmdr. Royal Sinclair, XO
=^=Increased activity? We just got the ship back into one piece Bridge.=^=
Lt Sutret - CE
=/\= Then let’s do our best to keep it that way, shall we Engineering? Bridge out. =/\= Royal said with a chuckle.
Cmdr. Dr. Brad Walker
Chief of StaffOOC: Moving things a long. But if there’s anything else you’d like to do to prep just reply above here.
IC:
The ship came out of warp and there on the viewscreen for all to see was the nebula. It was strikingly beautiful, with hues of blue and green, mixed in with some purple. The instant the Ogawa dropped out of warp the lights began to flicker and alarms began to sound. You didn’t need to be an Engineer to work out that the ship’s systems had begun to malfunction.
GM Budgie
The duty engineer cursed and it definitely sounded like he was muttering something that sounded like “please tell the Chief I didn’t do it.”
NE Didn’t Do It
The NE at the tactical console sent a message to the Chief Engineer -^- Chief Sutret, NE Didn’t Do It asked me to tell you he didn’t do it. I’m not sure I believe him though, I think he did do it. I know for sure it wasn’t me who did it, anyway. NE Tattletale -^-
- NE Tattletale
“Enough!” the XO barked. “Shields up! Modulate to compensate for energy spikes from the nebula. Full scans, try and isolate the ship. Comms! Try and get a lock on that signal.”
Cmdr. Royal Sinclair, XO
“Yes Sir, It was his fault, anyway,” Tattle Tale replied, “modulating shields.”
OOC: Not sure how I split off from the thread but reposting here to rejoin it.
Achilleas narrowed his eyes briefly but otherwise ignored the ship’s status. It wasn’t his concern unless life support was compromised. Instead he tried to use a higher intensity short range scan to see if he could find what broadcasted the distress call.
CSO Petrakos
There was too much interference in the nebula to pinpoint an exact location. The best Achilleas could do was narrow it down to an area of approximately 20 million kilometers. To complicate matters there was an asteroid field in the nebula.
The ship’s systems continued to malfunction.
GM Budgie
“Captain Ive narrowed the possible signal location to a twenty million kilometer area.” Achilleas relayed. “Unfortunately there’s also an asteroid field in the nebula. My recommendation is to launch an array of probes, leave one here as a relay, then pull the ship back until our system are stabilized and wait to see what readings we receive.”
CSO Petrakos
OOC: Hilarious! James OOC was telling me he was going to suggest a similar thing. :P
IC:
Dira nodded. “Helm, keep us on the edge of the nebula but do not take us in just yet. Lieutenant Petrakos, launch a three probe array. We’ll hold position here unless it proves necessary to move away. We can handle a little power fluctuation,” she said, looking over her shoulder back at science.Captain Myqian, CO
OOC: Great minds and all that. ;)
“Yes Captain.” Achilleas nodded then keyed in the launch sequence for the modified probes. The three probes were launched in a tilted triangular formation where each would go varying distances into the nebula but the nature of the triangle would make triangulating the signal possible.
CSO Petrakos
OOC: Or … fools seldom differ, as dad would say, one of the two. :)
- NE Tattle Tale
The probes launched and entered the nebula as planned. They narrowly avoided an asteroid as they entered the nebula. It was difficult to read the results of the triangulation, owing to the temperamental state of the ship’s systems- the console Achileas was working at kept blinking on and off- but he was able to triangulate a specific location of the distress signal. It was coming from inside the nebula approximately 20,000 km from an asteroid and close to the centre of the nebula. To get to the distress call they were going to have to navigate through an asteroid field.
GM Budgie
Sinclair watched the telemetry data come in and then said “Captain, Id like to suggest something. If we send one of our probes to within a thousand kilometers of the distress call, and then set another one in a stationary position 5,000 km back from it, and then another one 10,000 km back in our direction; we may be able to use the probes as a communications Network moving the signal from ship to probe and so on and see if we can’t communicate with the senders of the distress call and try to get what information we can.”
Cmdr. Royal Sinclair, XO
Dira nodded. “Do it,” she said, eager to discover the source of the distress call and what the emergency might actually be.
Captain Myqian, CO
Achilleas keyed in the new configuration for the probes and launched them.
CSO Petrakos
The probes launched as planned in the pattern Sinclair had described. The Ensign at communications tapped the console and did the old “if the screen goes blank whack it” trick. The screen turned on and he was able to open a line of communication to the ship.
“I have established a signal Captain, it’s weak but it’ll hold. We have audio only though I’m afraid. There’s too much interference.” The Ensign waited for further instruction.GM Budgie
Achilleas knew he couldn’t get visuals but he did what he could to boost the the probes’ signal gain.
CSO Petrakos
“Open the channel,” Dira said, riding to her feet. Though there was no visual, it helped her convey the right tone by assuming a more formal posture.
The Ensign nodded and did as ordered. The computer beeped at the command.
=/\=This is Captain Dira Myqian of the Federation starship Ogawa. We’re a medical vessel responding to a distress call we detected from this nebula. Can offer asisstance?=/\=
Captain Myqian, CO
A static reply came through, it was broken at points but the reply could be easily understood. =^= A medical ship? Praise be!=^= The relief was palpable in the female voice that answered.
=^= I’m Keeper Nyrasa Vell’khor. We have a medical emergency I’m afraid and we require....urge........ assistance. Our Elder healer is doing everything he can but...... reached.... limit of our medical capability. =^= Nyrasa added.GM Budgie
The audio quality was just good enough for Dira to get the gist, but they still needed more details. A whole lot more details. =/\=Keeper, we are en route, but navigating the nebula will take a little longer. Can you specify medical emergency you are dealing with? And if you can tell us what world you hail from so that we can best prepare for different physiologies, that would be very helpful.=/\= Some captains might not bothering to ask till they got there, but here on the Ogawa it was a key detail they needed for their preparations
Captain Myqian, CO
=^= Thank you Captain we really do......preciate it. We’ve..... come.....dow.....with a plague. We come… Aylia. =^= The voice replied.
As the Captain spoke with the other ship, Royal began running a search for the Keeper’s name and the title through the computer.
Cmdr. Royal Sinclair, XO
Royal’s search of the computer system came up with nothing. There was no mention of the Keeper’s name anywhere in Starfleet records.
GM Budgie
A plague. Great. Well, not only where they well trained for this scenario, but over the years this crew had gotten a fair bit of experience with epidemics. =/\=The nebula is causing some interference,=/\= Dira said, knowing the same could be equally true on the other end. =/\=Can you repeat your world’s name? And how many people are on your vessel?=/\=
Captain Myqian, CO
=^=…Planet is Aylia......We.....crew of 340.=^= Came the reply.
GM Budgie (and no longer awol due to forgetting to change character....)
=/\=Understood, Keeper, we are en route as quickly as possible. Ogawa out.=/\=
Dira turned to Brad and Royal. “Alright, full epidemic protocols. We have an unknown contagious illness on a vessel and we need the triage deck ready in case we need to move people to safe a place.” Myqian activated the internal comm. =/\=Bridge to Engineering. We have a medical emergency we are responding to and will need to enter the nebula. Things will get bumpy and we will need to reinforce external shields but also prepare for biohazard isolation.=/\=
