Zylithar K’rynn paced up and down the infirmary, things were getting desperate and for the first time in his lengthy role as Eldar Healer, he didn’t know what to do. That troubled him, his people trusted him, trusted his wisdom and knowledge. Zylithar was, as his title suggested, an Elder. He looked it too. His hair turning silver and thinning significantly in his latter years. He rubbed his blue, wrinkled hands together as he paced, it helped him think. He was utterly lost, he didn’t have anyone else to turn to, he was it. The buck stopped with him as they say, he could feel the pressure mounting, the healthy of the crew, were beginning to worry and to question whether he was up to the task. He couldn’t let it distract him, indeed, he couldn’t afford any distractions. He glanced around the infirmary and watched as his nurses, Assistant Healers, tended to the sick. He turned and looked at the sickest, the one farthest along, Elyndra. Her skin was as black as midnight. She hadn’t moved in the last few days. A sign that the end was close. The first to die, the first to be remembered. He thought as her breathing stopped. He watched as her body broke down instantaneously and turned to mist, evaporating into the ship’s artificial atmosphere. Zylithar put his head in his hands. Until he was disturbed by a tug. Turning quickly he saw Yira.
“What is it Daughter?” He asked.
“It is spreading, spreading fast. We haven’t seen anything like this before. I estimate that it will have spread to the whole crew in less than 7 rotations (a week). We need help.”
Zylithar almost laughed.
“From whom? I am the most senior Healer we have. Anyway, who would come to help us? We keep to ourselves. No one knows us. We don’t bother anyone so we aren’t bothered in return.”
“I’m not willing to just do nothing and die, I’m not the only one either. The Keeper is bound......” Yira replied and was then cut off with a raise of hand from Zylithar who sighed and finally nodded.
“Put a call out for help. I fear no one will come but we must do what we can, until it takes over us all.” Yira nodded and ran off to the Keeper. Zylithar looked around the infirmary and a small tear gently made it’s way down his aged cheek.
Yira ran through the ship like her life depended on it, because it did. The plague had spread rapidly, she’d never seen anything like it before. Her Father had mentioned something about ancient history coming back to haunt them. She didn’t really understand. She’d tried to ask questions but he just brushed her off, it wasn’t like him at all. That worried her the most, the fact that he didn’t know what to do. He always knew what to do. She pushed past people as she made her way to the viewing gallery- the bridge. After some minutes she made her way through the door and over to the Keeper. She slowed her breathing and bowed respectfully when the Keeper turned at Yira’s footsteps.
“Keeper, I have instructions from Elder Zylithar. He says.... He says to send out a distress call on all frequencies. We need urgent medical aid.”The Ogawa made it’s way lazily through space, if a ship could be described as lazy. It was certainly true of NE Cliffe. He’d made it his life’s goal to just be, average. He’d found the perfect job for it too, communications, nothing ever urgent happened. You could almost nap on shift. Perfect! He didn’t know why everyone didn’t go in to communications. It was easy. You might be mistaken for thinking that Cliffe loved his job, he didn’t. He loved the averageness of the job. He’d turned up today thinking that nothing was going to happen, as usual, so he ha almost drifted off when a feint distress call beeped on the screen. He almost jumped out of his chair he was so startled. He had to try and remember the protocols. Inform the senior Officer on the bridge. Who was that again? Ah yes, the Captain. He thought to himself, it was a wonder that anyone would actually want to be a Captain. So much work to do. He cleared his throat as he spoke.
“Uh Captain… There’s.... There’s a distress call coming through. It’s really faint.” He stated out loud.GM Budgie
The distracted thoughts of the wayward ensign should have been nothing more than idle unknown commentary, but unfortunately for him it was the captain on the bridge. And she was a telepath with iffy metal shields. The good news for Cliffe was that she also had an incredible poker face (thank you twenty years as a therapist), so he wasn’t aware he had heard those thoughts. Instead, she as focused on the distress call. It was certainly unexpected given they were on a medical supply run to Bocoria IV- a simple mission after the extensive repairs were completed.
Rising to her feet, she nodded at Cliffe. “Play it,” she said.
Captain Myqian, CO
Cliffe nodded when the Captain replied and he pressed play. The message that came through was very week and very broken. It was barley audible and static filled.
“........Requesting.......... medica........assi.....please........hellllllll......” The signal then cut out.
“That’s all we have Captain. I can’t make out anymore.” He waited for his orders.GM Budgie
Dira frowned and moved over the science station, peering at the source of the signal. Well… crap. “The signal disappears in a nebula. That never boded well. “How far away are we?”
“Five light years, Captain,” the NE at the science station replied.
“Anyone else closer?”
“No, ma’am,” someone at tactical said.
She nodded. “Alright then. Take us to yellow alert and send a reply that we’re on our way. Helm, set a course for the nebula, best possible speed. Science, get me everything you can on the nebula and try to clean up that distress call.”
The Ogawa went to yellow alert, calling all personnel to duty stations.
Captain Myqian, CO
Achilleas arrived to the bridge and relieved the science NE within fifteen minutes of the ship going to yellow alert. He shouldn’t be grateful for any excuse to leave the pile of PaDDs on his desk but he was. The NE gave him a brief summary before they left so he took this opportunity to long range scan the nebula and cross reference any findings against known phenomena and anomalies.
CSO Petrakos
As with any nebula, the first issue became the ionized gas that distorted signals, including subspace communications. This nebula in particular was mysterious and dense.
2 light years in its widest point, the Kairos Nebula was rather notorious for causing interference and navigation issues. There were at least two incidents of ships disappearing inside, including a Federation starship, the USS Brighton, a science vessel that went missing in 2388. It’s generally recommended to avoid travel through the nebula.
~Mischief Maker
Not long after the yellow alert sounded, the ops controls blinked that Beta Sickbay was standing by.
Lt. Cmdr. Kane, AMO
Royal looked as the information came in. The nebula was not a welcoming place for a distress call response. He looked at Myquan and said “Captain, Id suggest we hold position just outside the nebula and send a probe in first. We won’t do anyone any good if we get knocked out by something. We should prep as best we can.”
Cmdr. Royal Sinclair, XO
Dira nodded. “Agreed. Send the probe.” A part of her wanted to remain on her feet, but it would still take a little while to get to the boundary of the nebula, so for the time being, she took her seat and focused on what her crew was doing around her. This was exactly the sort of thing they were trained and prepared for, so it was business as usual as far as she was concerned.
Captain Myqian, CO
Sinclair nodded once and said “Aye, aye Captain. Science, prep a Class II probe for immediate deployment. Comms, try and get a fix on the source of the signal as best you can and relay the coordinates to Science. Helm takes us in and then hold position at twenty thousand kilometers from the nebula’s border. When we are in position and Science has the coordinates, launch the probe.”
Cmdr. Royal Sinclair, XO
“Aye sir.” Achilleas responded as he set about configuring the probe. Taking into consideration the ionized gases and the havoc they’d wreak on the probe’s sensors and communications package, he worked on getting an algorithm to shuffle frequencies and bands based on the clarity of the signal. Hopefully this would help mitigate the interference to some extent.
CSO Petrakos
Ensign B’Lura, who was at the helm nodded, inputted the co-ordinates and the ship responded, almost instantly.
“Aye Sir, I’ll keep the ship to twenty thousand kilometers.” She replied and the ship went to warp in the direction of the Kairos nebula. At their current speed it would take some time to reach, they had some time to prepare.GM Budgie
Brad emerged from the turbolift onto the Bridge, striding purposefully over to the command dais and sliding into the third chair.
“What’ve we got, Captain?” he asked quietly.
Cmdr. Dr. Brad Walker
Chief of StaffDira turned to their second officer. “Distress call coming from within a nebula that is marked as one to avoid,” she said, arching her brows. “The call wasn’t clear. It sounded like there might be a medical emergency, but we’re waiting to see if we can clear up the signal. Either way, standard rescue protocols. Prepare for anything and everything.” They knew the drill. “We’re five light years out and on our way in a hurry. You have a bit of time to prep.”
“Oh good,” Brad said in response. “No time like a plague for First Contact. We’ll have to put an extra emphasis on biosecurity protocols as well.”
She turned her head to Royal. “Give Engineering a heads up. We’re likely going to give our shield and navigation systems a workout today.” Good thing they were all fixed up and everything, but Dira was really hoping they weren’t going to take a beating their next foray out.
Captain Myqian, CO
Royal nodded and tapped the comms on the arm of his chair. =/\= Bridge to Engineering. We are headed towards a hazardous nebula with significant ion discharge and electrical activity. Make sure the shields and deflector arrays are prepped and ready to handle the increase in activity. =/\=
Cmdr. Royal Sinclair, XO
=^=Increased activity? We just got the ship back into one piece Bridge.=^=
Lt Sutret - CE
=/\= Then let’s do our best to keep it that way, shall we Engineering? Bridge out. =/\= Royal said with a chuckle.
Cmdr. Dr. Brad Walker
Chief of StaffOOC: Moving things a long. But if there’s anything else you’d like to do to prep just reply above here.
IC:
The ship came out of warp and there on the viewscreen for all to see was the nebula. It was strikingly beautiful, with hues of blue and green, mixed in with some purple. The instant the Ogawa dropped out of warp the lights began to flicker and alarms began to sound. You didn’t need to be an Engineer to work out that the ship’s systems had begun to malfunction.
GM Budgie
The duty engineer cursed and it definitely sounded like he was muttering something that sounded like “please tell the Chief I didn’t do it.”
NE Didn’t Do It
The NE at the tactical console sent a message to the Chief Engineer -^- Chief Sutret, NE Didn’t Do It asked me to tell you he didn’t do it. I’m not sure I believe him though, I think he did do it. I know for sure it wasn’t me who did it, anyway. NE Tattletale -^-

“Enough!” the XO barked. “Shields up! Modulate to compensate for energy spikes from the nebula. Full scans, try and isolate the ship. Comms! Try and get a lock on that signal.”
Cmdr. Royal Sinclair, XO
“Yes Sir, It was his fault, anyway,” Tattle Tale replied, “modulating shields.”
OOC: Not sure how I split off from the thread but reposting here to rejoin it.
Achilleas narrowed his eyes briefly but otherwise ignored the ship’s status. It wasn’t his concern unless life support was compromised. Instead he tried to use a higher intensity short range scan to see if he could find what broadcasted the distress call.
CSO Petrakos
There was too much interference in the nebula to pinpoint an exact location. The best Achilleas could do was narrow it down to an area of approximately 20 million kilometers. To complicate matters there was an asteroid field in the nebula.
The ship’s systems continued to malfunction.
GM Budgie
“Captain Ive narrowed the possible signal location to a twenty million kilometer area.” Achilleas relayed. “Unfortunately there’s also an asteroid field in the nebula. My recommendation is to launch an array of probes, leave one here as a relay, then pull the ship back until our system are stabilized and wait to see what readings we receive.”
CSO Petrakos
OOC: Hilarious! James OOC was telling me he was going to suggest a similar thing. :P
IC:
Dira nodded. “Helm, keep us on the edge of the nebula but do not take us in just yet. Lieutenant Petrakos, launch a three probe array. We’ll hold position here unless it proves necessary to move away. We can handle a little power fluctuation,” she said, looking over her shoulder back at science.Captain Myqian, CO
OOC: Great minds and all that. ;)
“Yes Captain.” Achilleas nodded then keyed in the launch sequence for the modified probes. The three probes were launched in a tilted triangular formation where each would go varying distances into the nebula but the nature of the triangle would make triangulating the signal possible.
CSO Petrakos
OOC: Or … fools seldom differ, as dad would say, one of the two. :)
