“Well, just as well you’re here now as well, Commander,” he said. “I think letting him wake naturally would be the most prudent course of action. If we reverse the sedation only for him to not be coherent enough to answer any questions, we might find it more difficult to re-sedate him since his body will still have the reversal drug in the system. If we wait, he will wake once his body has fully metabolized the existing sedation drug, and if we have to re-administer it will be more effective, more quickly.”

That (sound, if flimsy) excuse aside, Brad preferred to let badly-injured patients sleep as long as they could. The body was very effective at putting itself back together, if you gave it enough time. There were still things his team would have to assist with, but sleep was often the best medicine.

Dira nodded. “Okay, let him be, but call me when he wakes up.”

The captain took another glance at O’Grady and then gave Walker and Haven a crisp nod before she departed.

She smiled almost imperceptibly as Dira left them, every inch the Captain she was. She expected her orders obeyed and she trusted her staff to do their jobs. Zoi of course, trusted Commander Walker deeply and if his opinion was that they should wait for Lucky to wake naturally, then that was fine by her.

“Of course, Captain,” Brad said. “Would you also like to be notified, Commander?” he asked Zoe.

Before she answered, Zoi stepped forward to look down at the young man. Whether he would like it or not, he was now hers. He was in for a difficult time, but she felt the Ogawa would be just the right place for his recovery. She turned her gaze to the good doctor and gave him one of her rare smiles. “Yes Commander. I would, thank you.”

Brad gave her a nod, saying “Very well, I’ll let you both know when he’s ready to speak,” before turning his attention to the young man’s vitals.

She gave one last look at her newest subordinate, before she too took her leave. She wanted to read his file more thoroughly and figure out possible work life for him while he recovered.

Sam regained consciousness when his body decided he’d had enough time unconscious. He knew the Gavroche enough to know that this was a new sickbay on a new ship. The smell, though similar had a slightly different scent to it, still citrusy, just a different citrus, more … professional … less you’ll get the scent that no other ships want.

Sam appreciated that, and his eyes flicked open, which set off the appropriate warnings on the sickbay systems that the Lucky O’Grady was not yet dead, and even though he was unlikely to be doing the highland fling anytime soon, being alive was a good start at least, and in time he’d probably look on the bright side of life. He almost tried to whistle, but thought better of it.

A nurse was quick to respond to the alarms, silencing them with some deft finger work on the biobed.

“Good morning, Ensign,” she said cheerfully. “Welcome back to the waking world.”

“Good morning Nurse,” Samuel replied, “pleased to be back. When can I get to my duties?”

“Once you no longer look and feel like an incomplete puzzle that may or may not be missing a piece,” another voice responded, as Dr. Brad Walker strode into the ward, alerted by the alarms prior to the nurse silencing them.

“I’m Dr. Brad Walker, and you’re on board the USS Ogawa. In case you missed it prior to your sedation, you’ve been transferred to our crew for treatment and rehabilitation, and then you’ll join our security team. I’ll introduce you to the Captain and your new department head shortly, if you’re feeling up to it?”

“Thank you Doctor Walker, I appreciate it,” Lucky replied, “I am up to it. I …,” he paused, cleared his throat and asked, “how long has it been since I … saved the Gavroche’s away team?”
