Zylithar K’rynn paced up and down the infirmary, things were getting desperate and for the first time in his lengthy role as Eldar Healer, he didn’t know what to do. That troubled him, his people trusted him, trusted his wisdom and knowledge. Zylithar was, as his title suggested, an Elder. He looked it too. His hair turning silver and thinning significantly in his latter years. He rubbed his blue, wrinkled hands together as he paced, it helped him think. He was utterly lost, he didn’t have anyone else to turn to, he was it. The buck stopped with him as they say, he could feel the pressure mounting, the healthy of the crew, were beginning to worry and to question whether he was up to the task. He couldn’t let it distract him, indeed, he couldn’t afford any distractions. He glanced around the infirmary and watched as his nurses, Assistant Healers, tended to the sick. He turned and looked at the sickest, the one farthest along, Elyndra. Her skin was as black as midnight. She hadn’t moved in the last few days. A sign that the end was close. The first to die, the first to be remembered. He thought as her breathing stopped. He watched as her body broke down instantaneously and turned to mist, evaporating into the ship’s artificial atmosphere. Zylithar put his head in his hands. Until he was disturbed by a tug. Turning quickly he saw Yira.
“What is it Daughter?” He asked.
“It is spreading, spreading fast. We haven’t seen anything like this before. I estimate that it will have spread to the whole crew in less than 7 rotations (a week). We need help.”
Zylithar almost laughed.
“From whom? I am the most senior Healer we have. Anyway, who would come to help us? We keep to ourselves. No one knows us. We don’t bother anyone so we aren’t bothered in return.”
“I’m not willing to just do nothing and die, I’m not the only one either. The Keeper is bound......” Yira replied and was then cut off with a raise of hand from Zylithar who sighed and finally nodded.
“Put a call out for help. I fear no one will come but we must do what we can, until it takes over us all.” Yira nodded and ran off to the Keeper. Zylithar looked around the infirmary and a small tear gently made it’s way down his aged cheek.
Yira ran through the ship like her life depended on it, because it did. The plague had spread rapidly, she’d never seen anything like it before. Her Father had mentioned something about ancient history coming back to haunt them. She didn’t really understand. She’d tried to ask questions but he just brushed her off, it wasn’t like him at all. That worried her the most, the fact that he didn’t know what to do. He always knew what to do. She pushed past people as she made her way to the viewing gallery- the bridge. After some minutes she made her way through the door and over to the Keeper. She slowed her breathing and bowed respectfully when the Keeper turned at Yira’s footsteps.
“Keeper, I have instructions from Elder Zylithar. He says.... He says to send out a distress call on all frequencies. We need urgent medical aid.”The Ogawa made it’s way lazily through space, if a ship could be described as lazy. It was certainly true of NE Cliffe. He’d made it his life’s goal to just be, average. He’d found the perfect job for it too, communications, nothing ever urgent happened. You could almost nap on shift. Perfect! He didn’t know why everyone didn’t go in to communications. It was easy. You might be mistaken for thinking that Cliffe loved his job, he didn’t. He loved the averageness of the job. He’d turned up today thinking that nothing was going to happen, as usual, so he ha almost drifted off when a feint distress call beeped on the screen. He almost jumped out of his chair he was so startled. He had to try and remember the protocols. Inform the senior Officer on the bridge. Who was that again? Ah yes, the Captain. He thought to himself, it was a wonder that anyone would actually want to be a Captain. So much work to do. He cleared his throat as he spoke.
“Uh Captain… There’s.... There’s a distress call coming through. It’s really faint.” He stated out loud.GM Budgie
The distracted thoughts of the wayward ensign should have been nothing more than idle unknown commentary, but unfortunately for him it was the captain on the bridge. And she was a telepath with iffy metal shields. The good news for Cliffe was that she also had an incredible poker face (thank you twenty years as a therapist), so he wasn’t aware he had heard those thoughts. Instead, she as focused on the distress call. It was certainly unexpected given they were on a medical supply run to Bocoria IV- a simple mission after the extensive repairs were completed.
Rising to her feet, she nodded at Cliffe. “Play it,” she said.
Captain Myqian, CO
Cliffe nodded when the Captain replied and he pressed play. The message that came through was very week and very broken. It was barley audible and static filled.
“........Requesting.......... medica........assi.....please........hellllllll......” The signal then cut out.
“That’s all we have Captain. I can’t make out anymore.” He waited for his orders.GM Budgie
Dira frowned and moved over the science station, peering at the source of the signal. Well… crap. “The signal disappears in a nebula. That never boded well. “How far away are we?”
“Five light years, Captain,” the NE at the science station replied.
“Anyone else closer?”
“No, ma’am,” someone at tactical said.
She nodded. “Alright then. Take us to yellow alert and send a reply that we’re on our way. Helm, set a course for the nebula, best possible speed. Science, get me everything you can on the nebula and try to clean up that distress call.”
The Ogawa went to yellow alert, calling all personnel to duty stations.
Captain Myqian, CO
Achilleas arrived to the bridge and relieved the science NE within fifteen minutes of the ship going to yellow alert. He shouldn’t be grateful for any excuse to leave the pile of PaDDs on his desk but he was. The NE gave him a brief summary before they left so he took this opportunity to long range scan the nebula and cross reference any findings against known phenomena and anomalies.
CSO Petrakos
As with any nebula, the first issue became the ionized gas that distorted signals, including subspace communications. This nebula in particular was mysterious and dense.
2 light years in its widest point, the Kairos Nebula was rather notorious for causing interference and navigation issues. There were at least two incidents of ships disappearing inside, including a Federation starship, the USS Brighton, a science vessel that went missing in 2388. It’s generally recommended to avoid travel through the nebula.
