USS Ogawa
'Lucky' to Survive
Posted by Ensign Samuel ‘Lucky’ O’Grady (Security Officer) in ‘Lucky’ to Survive
To Samuel, it seemed every part of his body was in pain. Any movement, no matter how slight resulted in pain radiating throughout his body, the fall from the height of the shuttlecraft to the planet’s rocky surface didn’t help much either. He heard, more than saw the team transport down to the planet’s surface.
“He is alive,” Samuel heard before slipping into blessed unconsciousness. He woke in the sterile surrounds of sickbay on the USS Gavroche. The pain was still severe, but less intense. He was hooked up to machines, and the Nurse on duty, called out, “Doctor, Lucky’s awake.”
Lucky, he thought, rather ironic that, given what’s happened to me.
“How’s things, Sam,” the Bajoron CMO asked him.
“Sore,” Lucky replied, and tried to chuckle, but cut off almost immediately. He then gasped out “the team?”
“All safe. The XO said he doesn’t know whether to give you a commendation or a tongue lashing. He said if you pull that stunt again, he’d …” the CMO replied, “Why did you do that?”
“Bigger, Stronger, Faster,” Lucky said slowly, “Best pilot. I could fly craft and get them to safety. And then worry about me.”
“And now you … 2nd degree burns, 70 percent of your body,” the doctor said, “plus the fall. You survived it all though.”
“Lucky,” Samuel said, “you can patch me up?”
“The Gavroche …” the doctor said, but then broke off, “I think the captain should be the one to tell you.”
But Lucky returned to unconsciousness.
The flames, he was covered in them, the shuttle was breaking apart, and Lucky was falling, covered in flames. THUD Lucky fell out of his biobed, pulling the machines down with him. He woke up, screaming, a nurse was at his side almost instantly, and she called the CMO, the Captain, and the CoS to sickbay. If they had a Counselor, she would have called them as well, but the Gavroche didn’t have one. In any case, the Gavroche was not equipped for medical emergencies, at least not ones of this nature.
The absolute best for him was a planet with a hospital in her opinion and the CMO agreed. The CoS unhappily also agreed with the decision, and the CO told them there were no such planets nearby, but they were near Vega colony and one of the Nightingale-Class Medical Cruisers was there. He’d contact the CO of the Nightingale, one Dira Myqian if the CMO would contact their Chief of Staff, Brad Walker. The CMO nodded. The CoS said he’d do up the transfer papers for Lucky AND let the fleet brass know they needed another new security officer.
At some point the Gavroche’s CO, Les Hugo, put in a call to Dira Myqian.
=/\= Captain Myqian, its Captain Hugo of the USS Gavroche, one of our crew members was involved in a medical emergency, he was on a mission, their shuttle got caught in a meteor storm, he got the rest of the team to safety, but took the full brunt. He’s suffering from second-degree burns to 70% of his body. We’ve done what we can, but he’s now beyond our capabilities to heal him physically and mentally. We’re near your current location and could be there within the day. You’ve got the facilities and the personnel, please take him. He’s a good kid, and will make a fine officer. But he needs more than we can provide him at this stage. My CoS will send over the transfer papers and Samuel O’Grady can be in your Security once he’s recovered. My CMO is sending your Chief of Staff Ensign O’Grady’s medical history and the full report on what we’ve done. Trust you’re able to help, we’ll make the transfer on arrival. Les Hugo out. =/\=
=/\=Of course,=/\= Dira said as the call ended. She sucked in a breath and exhaled a sigh. They of course could easily take the ensign, but she knew they needed a plan.
Les paced in his office. Samuel had the potential to do great things, provided he didn’t take too many unnecessary risks, that is. His XO had already given a note of commendation, and a note of warning on Ensign O’Grady’s record. Captain Hugo knew that if it wasn’t for the Ensign’s quick thinking and actions, that Hugo may well have been contacting next of kin for each member of that team, to tell them that their family members had died on duty. At least now, the only necessary contact was with Lucky’s family and the contact would be about his injury, not his death.
=/\= Computer, put me through to the New Australia Colony, the family of Ensign Samuel O’Grady.
At around the same time, the Gavroche’s CMO, the Bajoran, Selbarisem Victor, sent a file to Chief of Staff Brad Walker. It was of the medical history of Samuel ‘Lucky’ O’Grady as well as details of what they had done to him to stabilise him, it was all the standard things done for a patient with severe second-degree burns. It was pointed out that there were clear physical and psychological issues being faced by the Ensign, and he hoped that with the facilities on the Ogawa that Lucky would be serving the Federation on the Ogawa.

The chime rang on Walker’s door, and Myqian stood patiently waiting to talk to her second-in-command.
Captain Myqian, CO
“Come in, Captain,” Brad called.
He was standing in the middle of the room, with the chart of their newest patient pulled up on a display on the far wall.
Dira stepped in. “Oh good, we’re thinking about the same situation.”
“Tell me he’s in Security, I don’t think my heart could handle him being in any other division.”
Cmdr. Dr. Brad Walker
Chief of StaffOne of Lucky’s fellow ensigns on the Gavroche packed his personal effects for him and had them ready to go following the advice from Captain Hugo that the Ogawa would take on Sam as a patient and crewmember. The ensign put something extra in for Lucky to remember him by. Other ensigns also put in little tokens for Lucky as well, as did the Department Heads, XO and CO. Lucky was still going in and out of consciousness as this was happening, and on more than one occasion a member of the Gavroche’s medical staff had to remind him he was injured and had to remain on the biobed.
He closed his eyes again and fell into a deep and dreamless sleep as the Gavroche made its way toward Outpost 42 where the Ogawa was docked.

Dira smirked at Walker. “And why is that?” she asked as came to stand beside him.
“I expect boneheaded stunts like this out of Security. Maybe, once in a while, an Engineer,” Brad said. “I suppose every division has their renegades, but generally I’ve found the sciences to be more sensible.”
She gestured with her chin. “What are you thinking about for prognosis and rehabilitation? Personnel has suggested an assignment here on the Ogawa once he’s ready to return to duty, since we can support his recovery best. If that is what makes sense. But he will definitely need significant medical and psychological treatment.”
Captain Myqian, CO
“I’d be more concerned if we didn’t have the Doctors Kane,” Brad said, knowing the Captain would catch the oblique reference. “That said, ‘Gentlemen, we can rebuild him, we have the technology.’ There’s little doubt he’ll need at least a year of limited duty, we might as well keep him after that.”
Dira nodded. “Might be less, depending on a few factors, but I agree, after a long stint here, if people are not moved to Starfleet Medical and are in a posiiton to be on duty at all, the Ogawa tends to make the most sense for a next assignment. Makes for an easier adjustment.”
The Gavroche docked at the Outpost and their medical team proceeded to move Lucky out of their sickbay, off the Gavroche down the corridors of the Outpost and onto the Ogawa, then down the corridors of the Ogawa to the ship’s main sickbay. Lucky was unconscious for the transport. Selbarisem Victor, the Gavroche’s Bajoran CMO led the operation and nodded to Captain Myqian and Brad Walker. He waited for the other staff from the Gavroche to leave before speaking.
“Captain, Doctor Walker,” he greeted them in turn, “thanks for being so accommodating with this. We do appreciate it. Mr O’Grady will be a benefit to your crew once he gets fully healed. If we could work out a way to keep him, we would, but our medical and psychological facilities are limited compared to yours. He wakes up screaming, the memories of what happened coming back to him. We don’t have a trained psychologist on board, whereas I know you guys do. We can have him talk and we record what he says, and include it with his files to support your counsellors in his mental recovery. With regards to his physical recovery, what we’ve been giving him, we’ve also got on his file. Hopefully it’ll be enough to get him back on his feet and working once more, once he’s fully healed, of course. Here are his transfer orders signed off on by Captain Hugo, authorising his discharge from duty on the Gavroche, and his transfer to the Ogawa, under your command, Captain.”
Myqian nodded. “Of course.”
“Appreciate it, Doctor,” Brad said. “We’ll all do our best to get him back on his feet in all respects.”
The Bajoran handed over a file to Captain Myqian.
“Thank you,” she said, accepting the PADD.
“I am sure you’ll think of him in the same way as we think of him - Lucky by name, Lucky by nature, and Lucky to have him,” Selbarisem Victor said, and waited for any questions that either Dira or Brad had for him.
Samuel remained sleeping through all of this.

Chief of Staff“I think we have everything we need, which we all appreciate, Captain. Good luck and I promise we’ll do all we can to help him be a part of a new crew.”
Once the captain had departed, Dira moved over to where Lucky was being set-up for monitoring. She pulled over a stool and sat at his bedside, her telepathic abilities able to discern his state quite quickly. She looked at Walker. “Can we wake him or do you think it’s best to let him wake up on his own?”

Though she didn’t know it yet, Zoi was getting a new member of her team. Her security officers escorted the new patient as well as the delegation that accompanied him to Sickbay. After the patient was successfully transferred to Doctor Walker’s care, most of her security team accompanied the contingent from the USS Gavroche to their shuttle and off the ship as protocol dictated. One of her security officers used that time to come and brief the Chief of Security on the new patient.
”…Lieutenant, I believe he will be one of ours.” Ensign Devros said in an enthusiastic manner belying her youth and general excitable nature. Zoi looked up from her PaDD and let an eyebrow raise to express she wanted to hear more. The Ensign continued in a more hushed and sad tone. “Though I have to warn you, he is in a bad way. Ive seen burn injuries before. They are never a good sight and complications have high rates for them.”
Zoi pursed her lips. She too knew the dangers burns represented. You couldn’t work on a medical ship without knowing things like this either as a biproduct of working alongside doctors, or from your own training. While Zoi had never trained as a doctor, she had been very good at making sure her education would supplement her knowledge of medicine once she was assigned to the USS Ogawa. Finally she nodded, more to herself than Devros.
“Well, I should go and see what kind of state he is in for myself and check in with the doctors. Back to your regular shift duties Ensign.” Properly dismissed, Devros left to begin what was undoubtedly going to be the most fashionable scuttlebutt of the week. Zoi put down her PaDD and headed to Sickbay.
She couldn’t help but smile a little when she saw Dira attending the young man. Of course she would be here. Yet Zoi’s attention did not remain on her love long. IT feel almost immediately upon the patient and his stats displaying on the Biobed monitor. “I too would like to know Dr. Walker.”
Haven, CoS
Brad barely spared a second glance to the security chief.
The captain however had sensed her partner’s approach immediately and smiled briefly at Zoi.
“Well, just as well you’re here now as well, Commander,” he said. “I think letting him wake naturally would be the most prudent course of action. If we reverse the sedation only for him to not be coherent enough to answer any questions, we might find it more difficult to re-sedate him since his body will still have the reversal drug in the system. If we wait, he will wake once his body has fully metabolized the existing sedation drug, and if we have to re-administer it will be more effective, more quickly.”
That (sound, if flimsy) excuse aside, Brad preferred to let badly-injured patients sleep as long as they could. The body was very effective at putting itself back together, if you gave it enough time. There were still things his team would have to assist with, but sleep was often the best medicine.
Cmdr. Dr. Brad Walker
Chief of StaffDira nodded. “Okay, let him be, but call me when he wakes up.”
The captain took another glance at O’Grady and then gave Walker and Haven a crisp nod before she departed.
Captain Myqian, CO
She smiled almost imperceptibly as Dira left them, every inch the Captain she was. She expected her orders obeyed and she trusted her staff to do their jobs. Zoi of course, trusted Commander Walker deeply and if his opinion was that they should wait for Lucky to wake naturally, then that was fine by her.
“Of course, Captain,” Brad said. “Would you also like to be notified, Commander?” he asked Zoe.
Cmdr. Brad Walker
Chief of StaffBefore she answered, Zoi stepped forward to look down at the young man. Whether he would like it or not, he was now hers. He was in for a difficult time, but she felt the Ogawa would be just the right place for his recovery. She turned her gaze to the good doctor and gave him one of her rare smiles. “Yes Commander. I would, thank you.”
Brad gave her a nod, saying “Very well, I’ll let you both know when he’s ready to speak,” before turning his attention to the young man’s vitals.
She gave one last look at her newest subordinate, before she too took her leave. She wanted to read his file more thoroughly and figure out possible work life for him while he recovered.

Chief of StaffSam regained consciousness when his body decided he’d had enough time unconscious. He knew the Gavroche enough to know that this was a new sickbay on a new ship. The smell, though similar had a slightly different scent to it, still citrusy, just a different citrus, more … professional … less you’ll get the scent that no other ships want.
Sam appreciated that, and his eyes flicked open, which set off the appropriate warnings on the sickbay systems that the Lucky O’Grady was not yet dead, and even though he was unlikely to be doing the highland fling anytime soon, being alive was a good start at least, and in time he’d probably look on the bright side of life. He almost tried to whistle, but thought better of it.

A nurse was quick to respond to the alarms, silencing them with some deft finger work on the biobed.
“Good morning, Ensign,” she said cheerfully. “Welcome back to the waking world.”
