The woman blinked and her breath seemed more drawn out. The hand still holding the water tightened but she never lost grip. In probably the biggest gesture she’d made thus far, Eloise casted her gaze down towards the floor, which required turning her head. “Carpet,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper, but she seemed to stop there.

Inwardly, Mariah breathed a sigh of relief. Even though she had absolutely no indication there was anything physiologically wrong with Eloise, she was beginning to wonder if she was going to be able to get through to her without more direct medical intervention. The key now was to try to draw her out without pushing too hard. “That’s great, Eloise,” Mariah replied with an encouraging nod. “Do you see anything else?”

She seemed to struggle to form words but it was different than before. Instead of a distance or absence, she didn’t lift her head or make eye contact even though she suddenly seemed more present. Her long breaths were suddenly shorter. “Water. The glass is cold in my hand.”
“It’s okay, Eloise, you’re safe here,” Sam said. “We’re in Dr. Grayson’s office on Deck 7.”

“That’s great, Eloise,” Mariah echoed, encouraged to know she was capabe of speaking in full sentences. When it appeared Eloise’s anxiety had suddenly spiked again, Grayson offered, “Do you hear anything in particular, Eloise?” Whether she offered a sound in the present or a sound from the past, Mariah was hoping to get some insight into what had precipitated this reaction.

Eloise squeezed her eyes. “Our voices.” She drew in a shuddering breath. “But there is a ringing in my ears that feels just like…” Her hand flew to her chest and Sam realized just in time that it was the same hand holding the water glass. His hand shot out and caught the glass, though it sloshed on the carpet.
He set the glass behind him out of the way and leaned towards Grayson. “If she’s stable, we should evacuate somewhere safer, like Deck 5. We could find a recovery room or something there?”
~Mischief Maker
Mariah didn’t disagree with the suggestion but wished that Sam hadn’t interrupted just as Eloise was revealing more. Grayson wondered if Eloise was about to share something from her past or something more current. If she were a paranoid person, she might think Sam had spoken up to prevent her from saying more, but Grayson wasn’t paranoid and had no real reason to think something so sinister. “Is that ok with you, Eloise?”
~Dr. Mariah Grayson, CoP
Eloise nodded. She blinked and looked around her, as if she seemed more fully present in the room and in her own body.
~Mischief Maker
Mariah couldn’t tell if Eloise was becoming more confused or simply more aware, but she noticed the change in her demeanor immediately. “What is it, Eloise?” Grayson also found herself looking at Sam in askance.
