She grinned but shyness crept into her expression as she lifted a small round savoury tart. It was soft but set and she realized it was made with eggs. A mini quiche? She smelt it first. “Mmm, pastry. I can smell the butter,” Cori said, her eyes lighting up. She took a tentative bite. There was onion in it and was that ham? Cheese. It all but melted in her mouth. “Okay, this is good, you should try one.”

Royal did as bidden and picked up the quiche and popped it in his mouth. He chewed and smiled and, after finishing it, said “Okay… I’m glad you like that because I do to. We can have that anytime you like.”

She chuckled. “It’s interesting to see how my memory will adapt as I go along. It seems so far that it’s better than it was, but obviously I’m no computer database.” She popped the rest of the tiny quiche into her mouth and chewed, eyeing the other options on the plate. “Okay, for fun, you pick the next thing I try.”

Royal smiled and then eyed the options. He selected a plate of two small sandwiches. He took a bite and nodded. Swallowing, he said “Barbecue pulled pork. Sweet and tangy. Just the right amount of sauce.”

She picked up the sandwich and took a tentative bite. Food was this strange experience. She was excited but also cautious. You just never knew when something would be terrible or maybe she would have a reaction she didn’t know about. No, her medical record would have listed any allergies. She let the tastes sit on her tongue for a moment before chewing and swallowing. “I like that too. It’s got a bit of a kick to it too, but it’s subtle.”

“What’s your favourite food or foods?” she asked.
