It should have come easily. It always used to come easily, but Cori was experiencing a brain that still needed to piece things together. Albeit, hers still could hold and process more information than it could before her original transformation. She squinted her eyes. “In my quarters? You were helping me unpack stuff, items that belonged to me. I think I joked about not being able to drink with you?”
~Cori
“Close.” he said with a smile. “Do you remember my thesis defense for my doctorate? The Admiral… and that smarmy Medical Capatain that tried to use you to trip me up? And who failed quite spectacularly? We had a celebratory drink right after.”
Royal
Her heart began to thud in her chest and her face wore a frown. It was inevitable, she knew this, but it hurt more than she expected. Yes, she didn’t have all of her memories, but this one was so clearly important to him and she wanted to remember. She wanted to look up at him but almost couldn’t bear the disappointment that might be in his expression. “I… I want to remember. There’s something on the edge of it that feels familiar, but… between being ripped out of the Saracen’s computer, and then being transferred into this body, I am missing memories. Like not faded from time sort of things, entirely missing. I couldn’t even tell Kane what my favourite colour was.” She took a sip of the gin fizz, hoping the bubbles would make her feel better. What other vital things had she forgotten?
~Corinne Dalton
Royal smiled in an understanding way and said “Well, until it comes back, I’ll just remember for the both of us. And I just happen to have the vid of the defense, so we can watch it sometime and see if it sparks anything. How about that?”
Royal
She inhaled a steadying breath and nodded. “Yeah, actually it might. I’m finding that it’s not always that it’s gone entirely but like my brain lost part of it’s reference system so things get lost in the mix. But it means it can be found.”
Sam returned and slid the platter onto the table. “Enjoy”. There were all sort of appetizers, both of a more casual kind, but a few fancier types with more complex flavours.
She eyed them and pondered. “It’s hard to know where to start. Except that I know for sure I did eat meat. I have a memory of my mom Janie making roast chicken that we had raised.”
~Cori
Royal shrugged and said “Well… just hop in. Take a bite, see if you like it, then go to the next. And smell each one, too. Smell is the sense most closely associated with memory in humans.”
Royal
She grinned but shyness crept into her expression as she lifted a small round savoury tart. It was soft but set and she realized it was made with eggs. A mini quiche? She smelt it first. “Mmm, pastry. I can smell the butter,” Cori said, her eyes lighting up. She took a tentative bite. There was onion in it and was that ham? Cheese. It all but melted in her mouth. “Okay, this is good, you should try one.”
~Corinne Dalton
Royal did as bidden and picked up the quiche and popped it in his mouth. He chewed and smiled and, after finishing it, said “Okay… I’m glad you like that because I do to. We can have that anytime you like.”
Royal
She chuckled. “It’s interesting to see how my memory will adapt as I go along. It seems so far that it’s better than it was, but obviously I’m no computer database.” She popped the rest of the tiny quiche into her mouth and chewed, eyeing the other options on the plate. “Okay, for fun, you pick the next thing I try.”
~Corinne Dalton
Royal smiled and then eyed the options. He selected a plate of two small sandwiches. He took a bite and nodded. Swallowing, he said “Barbecue pulled pork. Sweet and tangy. Just the right amount of sauce.”
