Myqian nodded. “Good thought.” She glanced at the PADD, noted the change and used her thumbprint to sing off on the update to the report. Dira handed the PADD back to him. “And in the meantime, I think I’m going to use this time with our working canine to get familiar with the training people need when working with her. I figure even beyond just helping me figure out what I’m doing with her, it’s useful for me as CO to understand the ins and out of the job that one of my crewmembers does.”

“Wouldn’t hurt, that’s for certain.” Sinclair said.

“Shall we go to the holodeck and and try some stuff out? You will probably tell me what I’m doing wrong pretty quickly, won’t you?” she said to Frigga with a smirk. And in truth, she knew she needed the time with the canine after Royal forced the issue about her trauma reactions.

Sinclair nodded and said “Oh, I’m sure there will a mutual learning curve.” Sinclair said. He moved to the door and said “I’m due on the bridge in thirty, but I may take over early. Astrometrics has asked us to do a close swing by the comet they found a few days ago, so we’ll adjust course for a few hours, then be back on track. Shouldn’t delay our arrival time at all.”

She nodded. “Sounds good. If you need me, I’ll be at school on the holodeck,” Dira said with a grin as she moved over and grabbed Frigga’s vest. “Come Frigga, let’s go to the holodeck,” she said as she followed Sinclair out, wearing a content smile. She supposed she had expected there to be more… unease within herself after her misstep in Sickbay but she was genuinely happy to spend time with the canine.

Stepping into the hall, she paused. “Oh, and if you get any gruff about the our AMO being away, tell them it’s better now than when we’re on active assignment,” Dira said to Royal.

“If anyone gives me any gruff, Captain, I will simply explain to them why it is in their best interests not to piss off the one who approves leave requests.” Royal said with a grin and a wave. He turned and walked to the center chair. “Lieutenant, you are relived.” and the Security officer stood and went back to his station.

Sinclair, XO

Dira patted her thigh and headed for the tubrolift. “Come Frigga, let’s go to the holosuite.” She had already checked the availability and booked Holosuite 2 on Deck 12.

Frigga stood and trotted around her legs and then followed Dira out and to the turbo lift.

Stepping into the empty space with Frigga, vest in her hand, Dira called out, “GALEN, load the Theraputic Assistant Canine Handler Training program add begin from the the first module.”

The computer trilled and a blonde haired, brown eyed older woman appeared. “Hello. I am Canine Assistant Trainer Hologram. You can call me CATH.”

“Its nice to meet you CATH.”

Frigga stood beside Dina and wagged her tail.

“Today we will work on basic commands and canine behavior cues. Many of these will be easy and you will have very little need to use them. Frigga is a very well trained canine and always minds her manners.”

Frigga barked once in agreement.

“What is your name and did you bring any treats with you?”

She couldn’t help but grin as she answered. “I’m Dira and I seem to have forgotten my treats.” She gave Frigga a nod. “Please replicate some for me, thank you.”

A small bag appeared on the floor, with a cinch top. Frigga’s nose twitched but she didn’t go near it. It had a clip to allow it to be attached to a belt. “These treats are small. You don’t want the canine to fill up on them. They are meant as reward for good behavior. For following commands. However, you do not want to give treats every time or your canine will only listen if they are given food. Other forms of reward are verbal praise and petting.”

Dira picked up the bag adn gave Frigga a grin. “Well I think we have those last two down pat, don’t we?” she told the canine.

CATH moved into the center of the room and a holographic beagle appeared. “The first command is your canine’s name. Whenever you say their name, no matter what they are doing, you want them to look at you. This is to show they are listening. If they don’t look at you, no treat.” The beagle ran off and started playing with a toy. “Huey.” The dog didn’t look. “Frigga will not have this problem, she already knows her name. But if she won’t look. Try showing her a treat and then holding it by your nose as you say her name.”

Dira fished out one of the treats and held it hidden in her hand. “Frigga,” she said with a more comanding tone as she gazed at the dog.

Frigga paused in running around the room sniffing things, her gaze snapping to Dira immediately. Her ears came forward and she waited. “Good,” CATH proclaimed. “Now to get her walk to you, you simply say ‘come’ and pat your leg once and snap your fingers. Eventually, you will be able to use just one or the other, but it will reinforce both verbal and silent commands to begin with both.”

With a nod, Dira looked at Frigga. She patted her leg and said, “Come,” as she snapped her fingers. It seemed simple enough and she knew Frigga was well trained so this was probably second nature to her at this point.

Frigga trotted over. She stood beside Dira, but at a somewhat angle so she could see everything around her and watch Dira at the same time. CATH nodded, “Good, now hold your hand out above her head, palm facing up, then tell her to ‘sit’. Once she has, you may give her the treat. Do not be afraid to feed it from your hand. Dropping or tossing it to her, will enforce the idea that you are timid of her.”
