“Hmmm,” Alexis moved back around the desk and pulled up her file. “Dr. Solar fixed the features, but you’ve reinjured your scaphoid bone. And the median nerve in the carpal tunnel is pinched. Some minor surgery and a session with the bone knitter will take care of that. You’re over working your wrist.”

Dira sighed. “It’s so tight, and feels swollen and hard to move some days. I’m trying to be gentle and keep up with both my exercise and my work.” She blew out a breath. “Also… I don’t always sleep great and I… get these nightmares. Sometimes I find I wake up with my hand in an awkward position.”

“You are using it to much,” Alexis said bluntly. “If it is swollen and hard to move then you should not be trying, and should have come sooner.” It wasn’t a criticism or chiding but simple fact. She loaded a hypo while she spoke and then held it up. “Anti-inflammatory. It will help reduce the swelling and help with the pain. After we do the correction, I will set you up with the occupational therapist.”

Dira simply nodded. After all, what else could she say? That there had been no time? She had gone form recovering to acting captain to actual captain in such a short time that she got lost in the whirlwind. It happened.

She sat down and looked at the Captain. “There are medications to help with sleep and even nightmares. There are other aids, like the alpha-wave inducer as well. If the nightmares are the main cause of your lack of sleep, I would not be comfortable prescribing such. I recommend you see Dr. Grayson.” Alexis knew her limits and when it came to patient care she didn’t allow ego to get in the way of saying someone else was the expert. “She can prescribe something for you, and I am happy to over see the dosing and side-effects if she needs me to do so.”

“I will speak with her,” Myqian said. “How long will the surgery take?” She knew it was a pretty straightforward procedure but it was best to check. She would adjust her day accordingly, but also she was trying to figure out when to when to bring up another topic.

Alexis went back to studying the images. “Maybe an hour all told. I’ll use medical nanites to relieve the compression on the nerve and align it correctly and the bone knitter will take only a few minutes to heal the fracture. We can put you in an old fashioned support brace afterwards until the natural healing has finished.”

Kane, AMO

She nodded. “Alright, that sounds like a plan then.”

“We can do it right now, or if you need to come back later we can do that. I will have to insist you do not use that arm between now and then.”

“I have time now. Commander Sinclair has the bridge. I will just need to let him know I’m indisposed for the next while,” Myqian said.

Alexis tapped her comms and ordered Jt’nal to prepare a surgical suite for her.

Now? Later? What was better? Did the timing even matter? This was overdue but again, things had been so all over the place and she was just trying to catch her breath some days. “Alexis…”

Alexis looked at the captain, her brows raising slightly.

Dira took a deep breath. “I owe you an apology, for that night with Frigga. I shouldn’t have interfered. I didn’t mean to cause harm but I was caught up in my emotions at the time and I didn’t think it through. So I’m sorry. I promise it won’t happen again.”

Oh, a personal conversation. She was not comfortable with those. Alexis just stared at her for a moment. “I did not think you intended harm, Captain. I apologize if I gave the impression of otherwise. Veterinary medicine is quite different from humanoid medicine. You could not have known.” She hadn’t even considered someone using telepathy on Frigga. She would have to leave more explicit instructions next time. She searched for the appropriate way to reassure her. “Frigga has recovered very well. No harm was done.”

She gave a small nod, feeling unusually timid. “I’m glad she’s doing well. I owe her a lot. Had…” Dira took a steadying breath. “It was a lot of plain luck that had everyone arrive in time, but if they hadn’t, Frigga was protecting me. She was trying to keep me awake so I could keep going despite all the pain. She was prepared to attack him if he made all the way to me. So.. yeah… anyway, I’m grateful to her and I’m glad she’s better.”

“Frigga is very protective of those that she is close to. She did the same for me once.”

Dira nodded again. She knew what incident Alexis was speaking of, but knew it was probably unwise to go down that path, even if the woman before her was probably once of the few people who understand the absolutely terror she had felt while Franks had held her captive. “I’m glad you have each other, and I’m glad Frigga feels at home here on the Ogawa.”

Alexis just watched her curiously and then nodded, “Thank you.”

She stood. “I’ll just step out for a minute to check in with my first officer and I will meet you out there?” she said, gesturing to the general medical space.

Alexis got up and walked out to give her privacy. She had the scans sent to the surgical suite and she went to scrub. Jt’nal was waiting with a gown for the captain to change in to, and then took her into the room and had her lie on the biobed.
