The last check in Bryn needed to accomplish was with her department head. Making her way to his office, Shar hoped Cmdr Walker would be the kind of DH who didn’t micro manage the staff that worked for him. He should be able to give her a run down on the other doctors to help her customize the working conditions, staff and preferences of each. Expectation on her face, she palmed the chime and awaited entrance.

The door slid open without any vocal acknowledgement from inside. A man taller than Bryn (but well shorter than the XO) stood in the middle of the room, looking over at a monitor she would notice was displaying her personnel file.

She was usually greeted upon entering a room, however, the Chief of Staff was silent as he perused a monitor where her file was displayed. “Hello, Dr Walker, I’m…oh, I see you know who I am. I’m reporting to you as my department head and hoping for any guidance you might share with me about other staff and how I can best see to their needs.”

Bryn smoothed a dark lock of hair behind her ear as she waited to be acknowledged.

“That might be a tougher job than you expected,” Brad said. “The senior-most medical staff fall into one of two categories: fiercely independent or in deep need of intense minding. Both myself and Dr. Kane, well Dr. Alexis Kane, we can get so distracted by our work we forget to do almost anything else if we get too busy. Dr. Marshall falls under the fiercely independent category, though as a surgeon he will be the one that needs the nursing staff the most.”

Still standing, Bryn nodded. “Thank you. That’s good information. I can stay out of Marshall’s way while still supplying him with surgical teams. Also, filling out daily schedules for you and Dr Kane will help you stay on track, I hope. It’s at least worth a try. Anything else, Doctor Walker?”

Brad gave her a half-smile. A schedule only worked well if you had someone holding you to it, and the best part about this job was that there were only two people on the ship who had a hope in Hell of telling him what to do.

“I do have a question about your file, Lieutenant,” Brad said.

“Certainly, Sir.” Bryn looked expectantly at Walker awaiting the question.

“This recurring health issue of yours,” he began, highlighting the relevant section of her file. “How bad does it get, and how long has it been since your last relapse?”

Not surprised that he had questions about her health—it was the only thing so far as he knew that could interfere with her work, Bryn met his eyes. “There isn’t a hard and fast time between episodes.” He was referring to the ‘tyl’ that had fused with her spinal column. “The last time I started with symptoms, it took a week before I was too sick to function and the down time lasted 17 days.”
