Joined Starfleet Academy at the age of seventeen. There were not many Ferlans in the UFP but she decided at a young age that Starfleet was just what she wanted. During her time at the Academy, Bryn met another Ferlan (Sym Shar) and had hopes they would hit it off because it was difficult to be so far away from her own people. The two were very attracted to each other physically, (Ferlans are a very good looking species) but took an almost instant dislike to each other mentally, seeing personality flaws they had no desire to deal with.

During her first assignment, Bryn was contacted by her parents who presented to her the idea of an arranged marriage. It was one of the things she’d expected to happen when she left home. Her parents had incurred a great deal of debt in the previous 10 years and a favorable marriage was probably the only way out of it. During their younger days, Tyr and Shivar Lydo (her parents) had made some very wise investments by purchasing several pieces of land that became choice real estate sites. Bryn figured her parents had been trading land for enough money to pay off their debts and there was little left over to live on.

After the arrangements were made, Bryn returned to Ferlan for the ceremony, not caring much about it because she didn’t plan on having anything to do with her husband once the vows were said. It was her plan to go back to her life with Starfleet and continue with her career in medicine. It wasn’t until Tyr informed her of a change of venue for the ceremony that she had any idea her life would not be her own anymore. Dressed for the nuptials in a flowing golden gown that covered every inch of her—with a veil heavy enough to block her vision, she was taken to Clymony Bay where she and her husband to be would be ‘joined’ together with the split body of a Morda. The man who stood next to her, accepting the role of husband, was also heavily veiled and covered, so they had no idea who the other one was until the deed had been done.

They stood before the Alter of Jry while the Morda was netted from the waters around them and split into halves. The ‘tyl’ (heart) was removed from each half of the Morda’s central nervous system and injected into the thoracic spine of the bride and the groom. Each now carried half of the creature. Their commitment to each other was sealed. The ‘tyl’ would grow rapidly now in its Ferlan hosts and while it grew would wrap itself around and through the spine in a way that would never allow removal.

When the veils were lifted at the end of the ceremony, Bryn was beyond rage when she saw Sym looking at her with as much anger as she felt herself. Without a word she’d turned and waded out of the bay, taken the mobile back to her parents home and began making arrangements to return to her ship. As Tyr and Shivar followed, hurrying to keep up with her, they called out their address to Sym in hopes he would be in hot pursuit. By the time the driver reached her parents home, Bryn was bent over, racked with pain, and vomiting. So much for returning to her old life. Within minutes, Sym and his parents arrived at the villa and Bryn took pleasure in the fact that he looked like he’d been just as ill as she had moments before. Once the physical distance between them was closed, the bride and groom began feeling better immediately. It was then that their parents explained what sharing the ‘tyl’ meant for their future. The two halves of the ‘tyl’ (heart) could only be separated by a finite distance. If either of the two exceeded that distance, Bryn and Sym would become gravely ill and if not reunited quickly, one or both might die.

As the higher ranking of the two, Bryn explained their special circumstances to Starfleet, who assigned the two of them to the same ship. Now they could continue their careers and their service…even if they didn’t share their lives with each other on the ship.

Physical Appearance:
Unlike humans who have evolved into numerous sub groups, the Ferlan are of a single appearance type. Across the board they have brown hair and gray or green eyes with a light complexion. Their features are slightly more defined than the typical human. They are slight of build, having a rather condensed muscle structure. That is to say, their muscles would appear small, but are in fact as strong as a very fit human.

Basic History:

The Ferlan have a recorded history dating back to around 10,000 BC. Prior to this were their prehistoric and proto-cultural eras. From 10,000 BC (or the equivalent) a number of small empires and communities branched out over the three continents of the planet, warring and gathering territory, natural resources, and strategic locations. This sparring continued until around 4,000 BC when the groups unified to form a culture similar in scientific achievement to ancient China. Progress was slow, scientifically, since their economy did not warrant an Industrial Revolution: supply and demand were already met. This continued until sometime between 0-1000 AD, when Ferlan scholars believe the planet was visited by an alien race of some kind. In any case, the empires and communities fractured, developed unheard of technologies either by pure genius or (as the scholars believe) using information gleaned from the visitors, and war continued for another couple of centuries. Around 1200 AD, the Ferlan, who had reunited, began to colonize and explore the other five planets of their solar system, setting up a colony on the temperate world of Ayana. The many moons of the two gas giants, Yera and Unax were mined for raw materials. As in their earlier ages, the Ferlan settled into a calm routine, administering their small domain for centuries. In the year 2274, the Ferlan system was invaded by the Klingon Empire. At this stage, the Ferlan had access to such technologies as warp drive, phaser technology and other Federation level sciences, but had not employed them much. Many Ferlan regret this, as the lack of application left them all but defenseless and allowed the Klingons to sweep in and demand natural resources from them. Luckily, not long into supplying the Klingons, the Federation opened a dialogue with the Ferlan about joining the UFP. In 2293, the Klingon Empire ceded the Ferlan system to the Federation, believing it was an honorable decision since the Ferlan had long craved membership of said organization. (Some cynics also noted that the Klingons had gathered most of the raw materials from the system already, leaving it useless to them.)

On the second ship Bryn and her husband were assigned to, the USS Cryptid, Sym was killed by a venomous insect while on an away mission. Bryn, also on the planet, lost consciousness at the moment of his death and spent seven days in a coma. She was returned to the Cryptid with the rest of the team and stayed in sickbay until she awoke days later. Contact with her people explained the coma was normal after the death of Sym’s half of the ‘tyl’. They told her the rest of her life would be spotted with bouts of illness due to the incompleteness of it. These bouts include symptoms of nausea, vomiting, weakness and blinding pain in her head that occasionally affected her vision. It was a small price to pay according to Bryn to once again have her independence and freedom.
