Dira studied him for a moment. “I miss her too,” she said softly. Her and Willow had become very close and it was hard to have that connection gone. She had been through it often enough over her career that she adapted but she’d never get used to it.
“And I’m saying this as a colleague, but also as someone who is doing her best to help the crew through this transition, but you are our Second Officer. It’s not just the medical department that needs your presence. You’re an important piece of the puzzle, Brad. The crew needs to know you’re available to them should they need you. I’m not saying you have to be really social, but try to be visible when you can. And maybe it will help you as well.”

“Thanks, counsel- captain,” Brad said with a light grin. “Maybe for my next workout I’ll just power- walk the ship, eh?”

Chief of StaffDira laughed at his intentional slip-up. One of the things she had been working on was utilizing all her skills and bringing them to the work she was doing, whatever that was. The reality was that she had been a psychiatrist for twenty years and it informed so much of how she interacted with people. “Hey, that’s Doctor to you,” she teased. “But yes, walk the ship. It’s what I’ve been doing since we first boarded.” For her it was as much about being in tune with each deck and its particular vibe as it was about the social and practical reasons for being in different areas of the ship than people might expect of her.

“That’s going to take quite a bit more doing on this ship,” Brad reflected, starting into his third set. “All the more reason to never skip leg day, I suppose. Maybe I’ll wear shorts while I do it, show off the calves.”
