The package was a small green crate about the size of a large tricorder and it was sitting on Kane’s desk when he came in. The CSO scowled at the object, and he immediately began looking for any signs of booby-traps.

A few moments later and Kane sat down and looked at the box. It was a courier package, and it was addressed to him specifically. Not seeing anything amiss, he flipped the latches and opened the lid.

Inside was a micro-PaDD and a small piece of gray-silver stone. A message on the PaDD read:

To: Dr. Solomon Kane, Chief Science Officer, USS Ogawa, Special Agent- Star Fleet Intelligence
From: Kenzo B’tren-Hyrushi - Governor, Oed V Colony

Dr. Kane,

I apologize for the subterfuge. My intent in naming your specific titles is to allow you to garner that I have taken a great deal of time in looking into you and ascertaining if you are the right person for this endeavor. I trust that you are.

The sample provided is from a unique geological feature found here on Oed V (site information and scan data is attached). I would like to request that you analyze the sample and send me any data that you may discover, no matter how trivial. I understand that you are designer and fabricator of no small skill. I’m sure you will find the unique properties of the sample before you to be of some use to you, so please feel free to keep whatever is left of the sample for your own use. I have also provided payment which will be arriving in the next few days, as well as all the data compiled on the substance up to this point.

I look forward to reading your report. Good luck, Dr. Kane. If I may be of assistance at any time, please do no hesitate to call upon me. I appreciate your time.

Kane read the message a few times before he set the PaDD aside and began looking at the substance..

It was almost a week later when Kane felt comfortable running his own scans on the material. Not that he was concerned about safety or anything… it just took that long to digest all of the data the Oed V Governor had sent along with the sample.

The substance was truly remarkable. Composed of a combination of silver, argon, mercury, nickel, platinum and carbon; its atomic structure was highly complex and seemed to be unique when compared against the Fedrration database… which Kane did not do directly. Instead he compared local scans against data already in the database to keep the substance from being seen outside of his lab. While such secrecy was never put in writing, the implied confidentiality was more than apparent. Especially after having studied the most unique aspect of the material: it blocked all extra-sensory abilities. Telepathy, empathy, psychokinesis… every documented kind of ability was blocked by the material… at least on Oed V. This far away, the substances ability was greatly stunted. The experiments that Kane did failed to replicate the same data that the governor had sent him. What Kane did learn was that the material somehow reacted to it’s native planet’s magnetosphere, and that in turn gave it it’s remarkable ability. That wasn’t to say that the material lost all of it’s suppressive quality… just the vast majority of it. This far away from the planet, it muffled telepathy and the like, but it was still possible to use these abilities through the substance… just at far less effectiveness.

Kane was excited by the find, and after he had ran every test he could and sent the data back to the Governor, he took what remained of the sample and incorporated it into another project he had been working on… a particular device for the ship’s XO. Fashioned to look like a thin silver headband that went across the brow, temples, and past the ears; the device was ready for testing. And in Kane’s mind, there was no better lab than the real world. So, when the device was finished, he sent the XO a message:

About ten minutes later, the XO slipped in and gazed at Kane with an air of curious expectation. “You came up with something a lot faster than I was expecting.”
